YUCATEC MAYA AND EUROPEAN AMERICAN MOTHER'S COVID-19 EXPERIENCES: A QUALITATIVE CULTURAL COMPARISON OF MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the lives of many families around the world. From daily activities such as education and employment to interactions at home, many families have had to adapt to the norms of quarantining and grapple with the challenges of taking on new roles within the home. The uncertainty of the pandemic and its effects can be particularly stressful for parents of young children who had to face these disruptions. more » ... = 13) and Indigenous Yucatec Maya families (n = 18) to explore the cultural variation of the COVID-19 experiences of mothers with young children. Specifically, this study examines how cultural practices related to child socialization and social organization, as well as access to resource, shapes mothers' mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings of the study show several differences between the experiences of Yucatec Maya and European American mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the study also found differences in reported levels and sources of maternal stress and resources available to mothers in each of the communities.
