Background-Progressive medial degeneration and atrophy is thought to be a cause of ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms in the elderly. Extensive apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) has been demonstrated in the media of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
