The aim of this thesis is to advance the understanding of the influence of the prevailing thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) boundary conditions in the geological repository on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of compacted bentonite-based materials. To achieve the aim, laboratory tests under controlled-boundary condition were performed on bentonite-based materials. more » ... ement conditions, multi-step swelling pressure tests, swelling pressure tests and suction measurements, and swelling pressure and permeability tests on desiccated bentonite samples and reference sample. The effect of the THMC boundary conditions prevailing in the geological repository on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of buffer, backfill and sealing materials were estimated according to the experimental results, the numerical simulation and the theoretical considerations.
