Although most patients believe maintaining oral hygiene only affects the mouth, many risk factors from untreated gingivitis involve developing serious medical complications at distant sites within the body because the bacteria can spread into the bloodstream. As a result dentists need to better coordinate their treatment of periodontal disease with medical practitioners because oral disease may indicate both an undiagnosed medical problem and cause a medical problem.
