In January 1460, King John II of Aragon imprisoned Prince Charles of Viana, his first-born son. This acted as a catalyst, increasing tension between the monarchy and the public institutions of Catalonia (Diputació del General and Consell de Cent), representing the battle between two different ways of seeing politics: growing royal authoritarianism versus an institutional oligarchy which showed strict respect for Catalan laws and compelled the king to obey the law to the letter.
