Destacando a representação escultórica do indígena, denominada "O Selvagem", verifica-se o objetivo da artista em constituir a imagem do Brigadeiro por meio da influência militar, artística e intelectual que este possuía em vida, além de reiterar a sua convivência com os indígenas. Também verifica-se na representação da figura feminina os ideais de religião e pátria, pilares fundamentais de sua construção identitária. Destarte, objetivamos cruzar os dados característicos da produção estética da escultora, influenciada pelos pressupostos do Art Nouveau, com a trajetória de vida do militar, de modo a compreender o significado da arte tumular representada no jazigo, então compreendida fundamentalmente como síntese identitária do sepultado Couto de Magalhães. Palavras-chave: Indígena-Identidade-Arte Tumular-Morte. Abstract: By the end of the 19th century, Brazil experienced a series of political, economic and cultural transformations. This wave of changes reverberated into the constitution of the Cemitério da Consolação, in São Paulo/SP, which began to mirror the city elite in their tombs, conceived with a growing level of elaboration and aesthetic refinement. This way, the present article analyzes the tomb of José Vieira Couto de Magalhães and the manner in which some elements of his life became present in the composition conceived by Nicolina Vaz de Assis. Highlighting the sculptural representation of the indigenous Brazilian, called "The Savage", we verify the aims of the artist in constructing the image of the Brigadier by means of the military, artistic and intellectual influence he played throughout his life, besides reiterating the time he lived among indigenous peoples. We also verify in the portrayal of the feminine figure the ideals of religion and fatherland, pillars of his identity construction. Thus, we seek to cross-reference data characteristic of the sculptor's artistic work, influenced by the principles of Art Nouveau, like the brigadier's life, in such a way to understand the meaning of the art present in the tomb, then fundamentally understood as a synthesis of the identity of the buried Couto de Magalhães.
