ABSTRACT: The text examines the characters of Rubem Fonseca present in the short story A arte de andar nas ruas do Rio de Janeiro (1992) focusing on the contacts between each other during the short story, as well as their relationship with the space in which they're inserted. If some characters can settle a sort of identificatory vinculation with each other by creating links backed by a sense of belonging (by a link of solidarity and altruism and by multiple combinations of identity traits), on the other hand they systematically reject and promote artifacts that lead towards detachment or maintenance of a vertical alignment.
