Purpose of review-Analysis of the auditory environment, source identification and vocal communication all require efficient brain mechanisms for disambiguating, representing and understanding complex natural sounds as 'auditory objects'. Failure of these mechanisms leads to a diverse spectrum of clinical deficits.
