ETHNOMEDICINAL PLANTS IN GARUDA PURANA USED FOR THE TREATMENT OF POISONOUS BITES

Garuóa Puràõa, an ancient scripture written in Sanskrit language, contains some ethnobotanical information. Acara Kanda is the division which discuses many human disease and their herbal treatment. There are many medical topics have been disussed in Acara Kanda division of Garuóa Puràõa which resemble those explained in Ayurvedic medicinal system. more » ... l data, it is found that this scripture mentions 31 plants species have been interestingly used till modern days to treat different types of poisonous bites such as snake bite, scorpion sting, dog bite, centipede bite, rat bite, spider bite. In the present paper 31 plants species belonging to 31 genera and 25 families are reported. Botanical names followed by family, local names, Sanskrit name, habit, used plant parts, the method of preparation of drug and mode of uses of the plants have been furnished in the enumeration.
