This paper describes an expert system for selecting the types of superstructures and substructures of river-crossing bridges, and deals with the knowledge of expert designers and rules of Japanese codes as the knowledge base. This expert system can automatically determine span arrangements satisfying the River-Crossing Structure Law, and uses the fuzzy set theory for pile type selection to express the ambiguous knowledge of expert designers.
