Noting that studies of media, culture, and consciousness assert wide-ranging connections among the three, this paper proposes a research program for investigating the media-consciousness-cultural link. Sections I and II provide a brief review of orality-literacy theories and communication theories. Section III proposes five areas of media interaction with the social self: cultural structures; social discourse; images of the self; autonomy, and models of social behavior. Accompanying examples in

Section IV presents conclusions which suggest that the proposed exploration would demand a great deal of careful historical work and suggests looking at narrative themes and narrative styles in addition to the five previously discussed areas.
