Because the spleen can no longer be considered readily dispensable, a variety of alternatives to total splenectomy (splenic repair, partial resection, autotransplantation, ischemic therapy, reticuloendothelial blockade and irradiation) have been developed to preserve functioning remnants in trauma and hypersplenism.
