Exploring the Design Space of Immersive Urban Analytics [article]

Recent years have witnessed the rapid development and wide adoption of immersive head-mounted devices, such as HTC VIVE, Oculus Rift, and Microsoft HoloLens. These immersive devices have the potential to significantly extend the methodology of urban visual analytics by providing critical 3D context information and creating a sense of presence. In this paper, we propose an theoretical model to characterize the visualizations in immersive urban analytics. Further more, based on our comprehensive
more &raquo; ... nd concise model, we contribute a typology of combination methods of 2D and 3D visualizations that distinguish between linked views, embedded views, and mixed views. We also propose a supporting guideline to assist users in selecting a proper view under certain circumstances by considering visual geometry and spatial distribution of the 2D and 3D visualizations. Finally, based on existing works, possible future research opportunities are explored and discussed.

Visual Analysis of Discrimination in Machine Learning [article]

The growing use of automated decision-making in critical applications, such as crime prediction and college admission, has raised questions about fairness in machine learning. How can we decide whether different treatments are reasonable or discriminatory? In this paper, we investigate discrimination in machine learning from a visual analytics perspective and propose an interactive visualization tool, DiscriLens, to support a more comprehensive analysis. To reveal detailed information on
more &raquo; ... hmic discrimination, DiscriLens identifies a collection of potentially discriminatory itemsets based on causal modeling and classification rules mining. By combining an extended Euler diagram with a matrix-based visualization, we develop a novel set visualization to facilitate the exploration and interpretation of discriminatory itemsets. A user study shows that users can interpret the visually encoded information in DiscriLens quickly and accurately. Use cases demonstrate that DiscriLens provides informative guidance in understanding and reducing algorithmic discrimination.

Augmenting static visualizations can leverage the best of both physical and digital worlds, but its creation currently involves different tools and devices, without any means to explicitly design and debug both static and virtual content simultaneously. To address these issues, we design an environment that seamlessly integrates all steps of a design and deployment workflow through its main features: i) an extension to Vega, ii) a preview, and iii) debug hints that facilitate valid combinations of static and augmented content. We inform our design through a design space with four ways to augment static visualizations. We demonstrate the expressiveness of our tool through examples, including books, posters, projections, wallsized visualizations. A user study shows high user satisfaction of our environment and confirms that participants can create augmented visualizations in an average of 4.63 minutes.

Photocatalytic Activity Enhancement of Anatase TiO2by Using TiO

We employed high-energy ball-milling technique to fabricate TiO/TiO2heterogeneous nanostructures. XRD proved the existence of TiO/TiO2heterogeneous structures. SEM and HRTEM investigation evidenced that the mean particle size and mean grain size of the as-prepared samples are 23 nm and 13 nm, respectively. UV-Vis spectra exhibited that TiO has enhanced the visible light absorption ofTiO2and has changed theEgofTiO2. UPS examination indicated that the electron work function (EWF) of TiO is higher
more &raquo; ... than that ofTiO2. Photocatalytic degradation experiments revealed that an appropriate TiO content can enhance the photocatalytic activity of pure anataseTiO2. The best photocatalytic activity of TiO/TiO2heterogeneous nanostructures is even better than that of Au-depositedTiO2by keeping high degradation efficiency of 93%. The internal electrical field producing in TiO/TiO2heterogeneous nanostructures was considered to be dominantly responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic activity. Therefore, the substitution of TiO with noble metal inTiO2will be widely used in the future due to its low cost. This study also provides a clear direction of enhancing photocatalytic activity ofTiO2: incorporating a guest compound intoTiO2with an appropriate content if the compound has much higher electron work function than that ofTiO2.

A robust modulation classification method using convolutional neural networks

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is a core technique in noncooperative communication systems. In particular, feature-based (FB) AMC algorithms have been widely studied. Current FB AMC methods are commonly designed for a limited set of modulation and lack of generalization ability; to tackle this challenge, a robust AMC method using convolutional neural networks (CNN) is proposed in this paper. In total, 15 different modulation types are considered. The proposed method can classify the
more &raquo; ... eceived signal directly without feature extracion, and it can automatically learn features from the received signals. The features learned by the CNN are presented and analyzed. The robust features of the received signals in a specific SNR range are studied. The accuracy of classification using CNN is shown to be remarkable, particularly for low SNRs. The generalization ability of robust features is also proven to be excellent using the support vector machine (SVM). Finally, to help us better understand the process of feature learning, some outputs of intermediate layers of the CNN are visualized.

The association between polymorphisms rs6265 and rs2030324 in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been widely reported, but the results remain controversial. Results : 29 articles with 7548 cases and 7334 controls concerning rs6265 and 22 articles with 5796 cases and 5706 controls concerning rs2030324 were included in this meta-analysis. The combined evidence suggested rs6265 contributing significantly to the increased risk of AD in females (codominant: fixed-effects model (FEM): OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.04-1.23; dominant: FEM: OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.05-1.31), especially for Caucasian females (codominant: FEM: OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.03-1.34; dominant: FEM: OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.01-1.37) and female late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) patients (codominant: FEM: OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.05-1.41; dominant: FEM: OR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.03-1.46). No evidence indicated an association between rs2030324 with AD in codominant (random-effects model (REM): OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 0.89-1.26) and dominant (REM: OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.86-1.27) models. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested A allele of rs6265 might increase the risk of AD in Caucasian females and female LOAD patients. In addition, no evidence indicated an association between rs2030324 with AD. Further studies are needed to confirm these results.

Distributed coordination is critical for a multirobot system in collective cleanup task under a dynamic environment. In traditional methods, robots easily drop into premature convergence. In this paper, we propose a Swarm Intelligence based algorithm to reduce the expectation time for searching targets and removing. We modify the traditional PSO algorithm with a random factor to tackle premature convergence problem, and it can achieve a significant improvement in multi-robot system. It performs

StreamExplorer: A Multi-Stage System for Visually Exploring Events in Social Streams

Analyzing social streams is important for many applications, such as crisis management. However, the considerable diversity, increasing volume, and high dynamics of social streams of large events continue to be significant challenges that must be overcome to ensure effective exploration. We propose a novel framework by which to handle complex social streams on a budget PC. This framework features two components: 1) an online method to detect important time periods (i.e., subevents), and 2) a
more &raquo; ... lored GPU-assisted Self-Organizing Map (SOM) method, which clusters the tweets of subevents stably and efficiently. Based on the framework, we present StreamExplorer to facilitate the visual analysis, tracking, and comparison of a social stream at three levels. At a macroscopic level, StreamExplorer uses a new glyph-based timeline visualization, which presents a quick multi-faceted overview of the ebb and flow of a social stream. At a mesoscopic level, a map visualization is employed to visually summarize the social stream from either a topical or geographical aspect. At a microscopic level, users can employ interactive lenses to visually examine and explore the social stream from different perspectives. Two case studies and a task-based evaluation are used to demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of StreamExplorer.
