Constructing quantum circuits for maximally entangled multi-qubit states using the genetic algorithm [article]

Numerical optimization methods such as hillclimbing and simulated annealing have been applied to search for highly entangled multi-qubit states. Here the genetic algorithm is applied to this optimization problem -- to search not only for highly entangled states, but also for the corresponding quantum circuits creating these states. Simple quantum circuits for maximally (highly) entangled states are discovered for 3, 4, 5, and 6-qubit systems; and extension of the method to systems with more
more » ... ts is discussed. Among other results we have found explicit quantum circuits for maximally entangled 5 and 6-qubit circuits, with only 8 and 13 quantum gates respectively. One significant advantage of our method over previous ones is that it allows very simple construction of quantum circuits based on the quantum states found.

Quantum Zeno dynamics of a matter-wave bright soliton [article]

The quantum measurement problem, namely how the deterministic quantum evolution leads to probabilistic measurement outcomes, remains a profound question to be answered. In the present work, we propose a spectacular demonstration and test of the subtle and peculiar character of the quantum measurement process. We show that a bright soliton supported by a Bose-Einstein condensate can be reflected as a whole by an electron beam, with neither attraction nor repulsion between the condensate's
more » ... atoms and the beam's electrons. This macroscopic reflection is purely due to the quantum Zeno dynamics induced by the frequent position measurement of the condensate's atoms by the electron beam. As an example of application, just as a soccer player would stop a coming ball, an electron beam moving backward with half the velocity of the bright soliton can precisely stop the soliton. This offers an entirely new and useful tool for manipulating bright solitons.

The serine/threonine kinase LKB1 is a well-characterized tumor suppressor that governs diverse cellular processes, including growth, polarity, and metabolism. Somatic-inactivating mutations in LKB1 are observed in about 15% to 30% of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). LKB1 inactivation confers lung adenocarcinomas (ADC) with malignant features that remain refractory to therapeutic intervention. YAP activation has been linked to LKB1 deficiency, but the role of YAP in lung ADC formation and
more » ... gression is uncertain. In this study, we showed that ectopic expression of YAP in type II alveolar epithelial cells led to hyperplasia in mouse lungs. YAP overexpression in the Kras G12D lung cancer mouse model accelerated lung ADC progression. Conversely, YAP deletion dramatically delayed the progression of lung ADC in LKB1deficient Kras G12D mice. Mechanistic studies identified the antiapoptotic oncoprotein survivin as the downstream mediator of YAP responsible for promoting malignant progression of LKB1-deficient lung ADC. Collectively, our findings identify YAP as an important contributor to lung cancer progression, rationalizing YAP inhibition in the context of LKB1 deficiency as a therapeutic strategy to treat lung ADC. AbstractRigorous exploration and dissection of potential actions and effects of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) in animals remain challenging. Here using multiple knockout mouse models and single- cell RNA sequencing, we demonstrate that the divergent lncRNA Hand2as has a key, complex modulatory effect on the expression of its neighboring gene HAND2 and subsequently on heart development and function, largely independent of Hand2as transcription and transcripts. more » ... se causes moderate yet prevalent upregulation of HAND2 in hundreds of cardiac cells, resulting in profound biological consequences, including dysregulated cardiac gene programs, congenital heart defects and perinatal lethality. We propose a cis-functional role for the Hand2as locus in dampening HAND2 expression to restrain cardiomyocyte proliferation, thereby orchestrating a balanced development of cardiac cell lineages. It is known that a classical SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime can provide a holographic dual to a 2+1 dimensional time reversal symmetry breaking superconductor with a pseudogap. We study the properties of this holographic superconductor in the presence of an applied constant external magnetic field, neglecting backreaction on the geometry. The continuity of the first derivative of the free energy difference between the superconducting phase and the normal phase at the critical temperature suggests that the superconducting phase transition with applied magnetic field is of second order.

Akt-mediated signaling plays an important role in blood vascular development. In this study , we investigated the role of Akt in lymphatic growth using Akt-deficient mice. First , we found that lymphangiogenesis occurred in Akt1 ؊/؊ , Akt2 ؊/؊ , and Akt3 ؊/؊ mice. However , both the diameter and endothelial cell number of lymphatic capillaries were significantly less in Akt1 ؊/؊ mice than in wild-type control mice , whereas there was only a slight change in Akt2 ؊/؊ and Akt3 ؊/؊ mice. more » ... alves present in the small collecting lymphatics in the superficial dermal layer of the ear skin were rarely observed in Akt1 ؊/؊ mice , although these valves could be detected in the large collecting lymphatics in the deep layer of the skin tissues. A fluorescence microlymphangiography assay showed that the skin lymphatic network in Akt1 ؊/؊ mice was functional but abnormal as shown by fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran draining. There was an uncharacteristic enlargement of collecting lymphatic vessels , and further analysis showed that smooth muscle cell coverage of collecting lymphatic vessels became much more sparse in Akt1deficient mice than in wild-type control animals. Finally , we showed that lymphatic vessels were detected in compound Akt-null mice and that lymphangiogenesis could be induced by vascular endothelial growth factor-C delivered via adenoviral vectors in adult mice lacking Akt1. These results indicate that despite the compensatory roles of other Akt isoforms, Akt1 is more critically required during lymphatic development.

Although targeting BRAF mutants with RAF inhibitors has achieved promising outcomes in cancer therapy, drug resistance remains a remarkable challenge, and underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we characterized a previously unknown group of oncogenic BRAF mutants with in-frame insertions (LLRins506 or VLRins506) of αC-β4 loop. more » ... ine and thus triggers the catalytic activity of BRAF. Furthermore, these insertions disrupted BRAF dimer interface and impaired dimerization. Unlike BRAF(V600E), these BRAF mutants with low dimer affinity were strongly resistant to all RAF inhibitors in clinic or clinical trials, which arises from their stabilized R-spines. As predicted by molecular docking, the stabilized R-spines in other BRAF mutants also conferred drug resistance. Together, our data indicated that the stability of R-spine but not dimer affinity determines the RAF inhibitor resistance of oncogenic BRAF mutants.
