k· p effective Hamiltonian is important for theoretical analysis in condensed matter physics. Based on the 'kdotp-symmetry' package, we develop an upgraded package named 'kdotp-generator'. This generator takes in arbitrary magnetic symmetries with their representations and returns symmetry-allowed k· p Hamiltonians. Using this package, we calculate k· p Hamiltonians for irreducible corepresentations in 1651 magnetic space groups up to the third order, and their linear coupling to external

Baculoviruses may interact with parasitoids in the same host. A previous study has shown that infection of larvae with Spodoptera litura nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpltNPV) was deleterious to the survival and development of Meteorus pulchricornis (Wesmael) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). In this paper, the interactions between M. pulchricornis and Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) in Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a permissive host of the virus and parasitoid,
more &raquo; ... were investigated. The results showed that the effect of M. pulchricornis on SeMNPV and the effect of the virus on the parasitoid both depended on the concentration of the virus and the interval between viral infection and parasitism. Whether S. exigua was treated with the parasitoid and virus simultaneously or 1 day apart, the biological activities of 10 5 , 10 6 , and 10 7 OBs/mL SeMNPV were all significantly improved by M. pulchricornis. In contrast, the biological activity of 10 3 OBs/mL SeMNPV was significantly decreased when the host was exposed to the virus and parasitoid simultaneously. Regarding the impact of SeMNPV on M. pulchricornis, exposing the host to the parasitoid and SeMNPV with concentrations lower than 10 6 occlusion bodies (OBs)/mL produced no negative effects on the parasitoid. The results also showed that ingestion of SeMNPV by adult stage M. pulchricornis significantly increased the number of parasitoid offspring that successfully emerged from the host. Furthermore, M. pulchricornis was found to transmit SeMNPV among populations of S. exigua. Taken together, these findings indicate that M. pulchricornis integrated with an appropriate concentration of SeMNPV has the potential to improve the efficacy of biological control against S. exigua.

Efficient Characterization and Classification of Contrast Sensitivity Functions in Aging

The contrast sensitivity function (CSF), delineating contrast sensitivity over a wide range of spatial frequencies, provides a comprehensive characterization of spatial vision and a sensitive test for many physiological and pathological processes. A precise CSF measurement tool for the aging population is of great theoretical and practical importance. In the current study, we tested whether the assumptions of the newly developed quick CSF method were valid and whether it can rapidly, reliably,
more &raquo; ... nd effectively evaluate CSFs in the aging population. The quick CSF method combines Bayesian adaptive inference with an information gain strategy to directly estimate four parameters that define the observer's CSF. Eighteen young and twenty-five old observers participated in the evaluation of the quick CSF method. All observers were screened for ophthalmological and mental diseases. Our results showed that the CSFs derived from the quick CSF method well matched with those from the traditional Ψ method, with excellent test-retest reliability. More importantly, the quick CSF method can accurately detect the difference of CSFs between the young and old groups. Aging significantly degrades contrast sensitivity. The quick CSF method demonstrates great potentials for both laboratory research and clinical applications in the aging population. Aging is an irreversible stage of human life. Aging, either normal or pathological, impairs a variety of visual functions, including visual acuity 1, 2 , contrast sensitivity 3-5 , motion perception 6-9 , orientation discrimination 10 , and contour integration 11, 12 . Age-related vision decline or impairment affects the quality of life 13, 14 . It increases the probability of falls in locomotion 15, 16 and crash risk during driving 17 , and has been related to age-related declines in other cognitive and behavioral functions. For example, Lin and colleagues 18 found that impairment of distant visual acuity was associated with cognitive retardation in a large sample of older women. Salthouse, Hancock, Meinz and Hambrick 19 found that impairment of near visual acuity significantly affected working memory, associative learning and concept identification. Among all the affected visual functions, contrast sensitivity, or sensitivity to luminance variations, is one of the most fundamental functions of the visual system 20 . Delahunt, Hardy, and Werner 21 found that the decline of contrast sensitivity in the elderly could account for increased orientation discrimination thresholds. Greene and Madden 22 showed that only contrast sensitivity remained significantly different between old and young observers after taking into account the correlations among near acuity, distant acuity, stereopsis, and contrast sensitivity. In addition, many studies showed that even after visual acuity was compensated, contrast sensitivity was still impaired by aging 3-5 . These studies highlight the importance and necessity of evaluating contrast sensitivity in monitoring age-related vision decline. The contrast sensitivity function (CSF), delineating contrast sensitivity over a wide range of spatial frequencies, provides a comprehensive characterization of spatial vision and a sensitive test for many physiological and pathological processes 23 . Clinical CSF tests, e.g. the Pelli-Robson chart 24 , Vistech contrast sensitivity chart 25 and its descendants, the Functional Acuity Contrast Test (FACT) 26 , the Contrast Sensitivity Tester 1800 (Vision Sciences Research Corporation, San Ramon, CA), and CVS-1000 series chart (VectorVision Dayton, OH) can be used to get a rough estimate of the CSF but are not very precise because of the coarse sampling of stimulus

Topological nodal line semimetals

We review the recent, mainly theoretical, progress in the study of topological nodal line semimetals in three dimensions. In these semimetals, the conduction and the valence bands cross each other along a one-dimensional curve in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, and any perturbation that preserves a certain symmetry group (generated by either spatial symmetries or time-reversal symmetry) cannot remove this crossing line and open a full direct gap between the two bands. The nodal line(s) is
more &raquo; ... hence topologically protected by the symmetry group, and can be associated with a topological invariant. In this Review, (i) we enumerate the symmetry groups that may protect a topological nodal line; (ii) we write down the explicit form of the topological invariant for each of these symmetry groups in terms of the wave functions on the Fermi surface, establishing a topological classification; (iii) for certain classes, we review the proposals for the realization of these semimetals in real materials and (iv) we discuss different scenarios that when the protecting symmetry is broken, how a topological nodal line semimetal becomes Weyl semimetals, Dirac semimetals and other topological phases and (v) we discuss the possible physical effects accessible to experimental probes in these materials.

Topological nodal lines and hybrid Weyl nodes in YCoC_2 [article]

Based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose that the noncentrosymmetric superconductor YCoC_2 in normal state is a topological semimetal. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), it can host two intersecting nodal rings protected by two mirror planes, respectively. One ring is composed of type-I nodes, where the two crossing bands have opposite slop sign in their dispersions. The other ring consists of both type-I and type-II nodes (the slop signs of the
more &raquo; ... wo bands are the same in certain direction). In the presence of SOC, the former nodal ring is gapped totally while the later one evolves into ten pairs of Weyl nodes, with two of them being type-I and eight being type-II. The type-II Weyl nodes are further classified into two kinds with different velocity matrix when described in Weyl equation near the nodes. Fermi arcs from topological surface states are observed in the surface projected energy dispersions. It is notably that YCoC_2 has been reported as a superconductor with critical temperature T_c of 4.2 K. This makes it very attractive since including superconducting into topological semimetal state might result in topological superconductivity and be used to synthesize Majorana zero modes.

A diagnosis scheme for topological degeneracies at high-symmetry momenta [article]

Theories of symmetry-based indicators and topological quantum chemistry, while powerful in diagnosing gapped topological materials, cannot be directly applied to diagnosing band degeneracies at high-symmetry momenta due to the violation of the compatibility conditions. Here we design a recursive protocol that utilizes indicators of maximal subgroups to infer the topological nature of band degeneracies at high-symmetry lines. For demonstration, the method is used to predict the existence of

Prenylated Xanthones from the Bark of Garcinia xanthochymus and Their 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) Radical Scavenging Activities

Garcinia xanthochymus has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for expelling worms and removing food toxins. Bioassay-guided fractionation of an EtOAc-soluble extract of G. xanthochymus stem bark led to the isolation of six new xanthones. Compound 1 exhibited effective antioxidant scavenging activity against DPPH radical with an IC 50 value of 19.64 μM, and compound 6 showed the lowest activity among all the tested molecules, with an IC 50 value of 66.88 μM. These findings support the notion that the plant genus Garcinia is a good source of bioactive compounds.

Using modified whole-mount in situ hybridization to study mpo expression in zebrafish

In this study, we cloned the myeloperoxidase (mpo) gene of zebrafish and prepared a digoxigenin-labeled mpo RNA probe to investigate mpo gene expression in zebrafish during embryonic development by whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH). The earliest mpo expression was detected in cells of the intermediate cell mass (ICM) at 18 h post-fertilization (hpf). It was detected 1 to 2 h later in cells in the rostral blood island (RBI) and strong signals were observed in the anterior ICM. Then, it
more &raquo; ... ead over the yolk sac. By 72 hpf these mpo-expressing cells were in the circulation and distributed throughout the embryo. We identified that the level of mpo expression detected by WISH at an early stage was consistent with the data of cytological analyses of adult fish. The use of this method enabled us to track the gene changes that took place before morphological phenotypes were detected, as well to as investigate the hematopoietic cell fate in mutational or transgenic models in vivo. In this study, we modified several steps of WISH. The improved hybridization results demonstrated high specificity, distinct coloration and low background figures.

MYCN Transgenic Zebrafish Model with the Characterization of Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Altered Hematopoiesis

Amplification of MYCN (N-Myc) oncogene has been reported as a frequent event and a poor prognostic marker in human acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The molecular mechanisms and transcriptional networks by which MYCN exerts its influence in AML are largely unknown. more &raquo; ... ontrolled by MYCN in human and functionally involved in neutrophil maturation, was significantly underexpressed in this model. Using peripheral blood smear detection, histological section and flow cytometric analysis of single cell suspension from kidney and spleen, we found that MYCN overexpression promoted cell proliferation, enhanced the repopulating activity of myeloid cells and the accumulation of immature hematopoietic blast cells. MYCN enhanced primitive hematopoiesis by upregulating scl and lmo2 expression and promoted myelopoiesis by inhibiting gata1 expression and inducing pu.1, mpo expression. Microarray analysis identified that cell cycle, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, MAPK/Ras, and p53-mediated apoptosis pathways were upregulated. In addition, mismatch repair, transforming and growth factor b (TGFb) were downregulated in MYCN-overexpressing blood cells (p,0.01). All of these signaling pathways are critical in the proliferation and malignant transformation of blood cells. Conclusion/Significance: The above results induced by overexpression of MYCN closely resemble the main aspects of human AML, suggesting that MYCN plays a role in the etiology of AML. MYCN reprograms hematopoietic cell fate by regulating NDRG1 and several lineage-specific hematopoietic transcription factors. Therefore, this MYCN transgenic zebrafish model facilitates dissection of MYCN-mediated signaling in vivo, and enables high-throughput scale screens to identify the potential therapeutic targets.

Multi-label learning has been widely used in many fields to solve the problem of assigning multiple related categories to an instance. Nevertheless, the label for each training example is assumed complete in most of the current multi-label learning methods. As a matter of fact, it is often hard to obtain training samples with complete labels, thus weakly supervised multi-label learning is demanded, which has become a hot topic in recent years. In this paper, the asymmetric stage-wise loss function is introduced to make positive class samples farther away from the classification boundary than negative class samples by adjusting ramp as well as the margin parameters. In addition, the general aggregate loss function is replaced with the average top-k aggregate loss so as to protect the non-typical distributed samples from being sacrificed in the aggregation process of the loss function, and therefore improve the identification accuracy of minority labels. The experiments on both standard and large-scale multi-label data sets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can solve the problem of class imbalance by changing the sample distribution of training set, thus obtaining competitive performance. Topological states and topological phase transition in Cu2SnS3 and Cu2SnSe3 [article]

Based on the first-principles calculations within local density approximation and model analysis, we propose that the iso-structural compounds Cu2SnS3 and Cu2SnSe3 are both the simplest nodal line semimetals with only one nodal line in their crystal momentum space when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. The including of SOC drives Cu2SnS3 into a Weyl semimetal (WSM) state with only two pairs of Weyl nodes, the minimum number required for WSM with time reversal symmetry. In contrast, SOC
more &raquo; ... Cu2SnSe3 to strong topological insulator (TI) state. This difference can be well understood as there is a topological phase transition (TPT). In it, the Weyl nodes are driven by tunable SOC and annihilate in a mirror plane, resulting in a TI. This TPT, together with the evolution of Weyl nodes, the changing of mirror Chern numbers of mirror plane and the Z2 indices protected by time-reversal symmetry has been demonstrated by the calculation of Cu2SnS3-xSex within virtual crystal approximation and an effective k · p model analysis. Though our first-principles calculations have overestimated the topological states in both compounds, we believe that the theoretical demonstration of controlling TPT and evolution of Weyl nodes will stimulate further efforts in exploring them.
