Decoupled Dynamic Filter Networks [article]

Convolution is one of the basic building blocks of CNN architectures. Despite its common use, standard convolution has two main shortcomings: Content-agnostic and Computation-heavy. Dynamic filters are content-adaptive, while further increasing the computational overhead. Depth-wise convolution is a lightweight variant, but it usually leads to a drop in CNN performance or requires a larger number of channels. In this work, we propose the Decoupled Dynamic Filter (DDF) that can simultaneously
more &raquo; ... kle both of these shortcomings. Inspired by recent advances in attention, DDF decouples a depth-wise dynamic filter into spatial and channel dynamic filters. This decomposition considerably reduces the number of parameters and limits computational costs to the same level as depth-wise convolution. Meanwhile, we observe a significant boost in performance when replacing standard convolution with DDF in classification networks. ResNet50 / 101 get improved by 1.9% and 1.3% on the top-1 accuracy, while their computational costs are reduced by nearly half. Experiments on the detection and joint upsampling networks also demonstrate the superior performance of the DDF upsampling variant (DDF-Up) in comparison with standard convolution and specialized content-adaptive layers.

AbRSA: A robust tool for antibody numbering

The remarkable progress in cancer immunotherapy in recent years has led to the heat of great development for therapeutic antibodies. Antibody numbering, which standardizes a residue index at each position of an antibody variable domain, is an important step in immunoinformatic analysis. It provides an equivalent index for the comparison of sequences or structures, which is particularly valuable for antibody modeling and engineering. This article introduces a new antibody-numbering tool named AbRSA, which integrates heuristic knowledge of region-specific features into sequence mapping to enhance the robustness. The benchmarks demonstrate that, AbRSA exhibits robust performance in numbering sequences with diverse lengths and patterns compared with the state-of-the-art tools. AbRSA offers a user-friendly interface for antibody numbering, complementarity-determining region delimitation, and 3D structure rendering. It is freely available at http://cao.labshare.cn/AbRSA.

Single image reflection removal problem aims to divide a reflection-contaminated image into a transmission image and a reflection image. It is a canonical blind source separation problem and is highly ill-posed. In this paper, we present a novel deep architecture called deep unfolded single image reflection removal network (DURRNet) which makes an attempt to combine the best features from model-based and learning-based paradigms and therefore leads to a more interpretable deep architecture.
more &raquo; ... ifically, we first propose a model-based optimization with transform-based exclusion prior and then design an iterative algorithm with simple closed-form solutions for solving each sub-problems. With the deep unrolling technique, we build the DURRNet with ProxNets to model natural image priors and ProxInvNets which are constructed with invertible networks to impose the exclusion prior. Comprehensive experimental results on commonly used datasets demonstrate that the proposed DURRNet achieves state-of-the-art results both visually and quantitatively.

A Chinese skin colour database is established based on measurements taken from nine bodies areas of 202 Chinese individuals to move towards accurate skin colour reproduction. The colour appearance of each skin point is predicted, and a comprehensive colour gamut for Chinese skin is determined. A consistent colour shift between facial and arm colours is identified, in which facial colour tends to be more reddish, more colourful, and darker than arm colour. Structural Basis of Selective Ubiquitination of TRF1 by SCFFbx4

TRF1 is a critical regulator of telomere length. As such, TRF1 levels are regulated by ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis via an SCF E3 ligase where Fbx4 contributes to substrate specification. Here, we report the crystal structure of the Fbx4-TRF1 complex at 2.4 Å resolution. Fbx4 contains an unusual substrate-binding domain that adopts a small GTPase fold. Strikingly, this atypical GTPase domain of Fbx4 binds to a globular domain of TRF1 through an intermolecular b sheet, instead of recognizing
more &raquo; ... hort peptides/degrons as often seen in other F-box protein-substrate complexes. Importantly, mutations in this interface abrogate Fbx4-dependent TRF1 binding and ubiquitination. Furthermore, the data demonstrate that recognition of TRF1 by SCF Fbx4 is regulated by another telomere protein, TIN2. Our results reveal an atypical small GTPase domain within Fbx4 as a substrate-binding motif for SCF Fbx4 and uncover a mechanism for selective ubiquitination and degradation of TRF1 in telomere homeostasis control.

Topological Design of a Mortar Base Plate under Impact Loads

In this work, the topology optimization of a mortar base plate is analysed under impact loading conditions. Usually, in this case, only ordinary topology optimization under volume constraints is considered. However, to reduce the quality of the mortar base plate and facilitate engineering applications, the topological optimization problem of the continuum of the base plate under the engineering and quality constraint is considered. A finite element model has been established and verified by
more &raquo; ... ing for the mortar base plate. The variable density method was used to obtain the topological optimization results of the base plate based on the force transmission path, and then the structure was reconstructed. The mass of the optimization model of the base plate is 12.78% lower than that of the original model. In comparison with the original base plate before optimization, the results show that the maximum deformation and stress of the base plate decreased by 16.85% and 35.52%, respectively. Also, the firing stability of the mortar meets requirements, which not only meet the design requirement but also provide a reference for the performance improvement and structural optimization design of the base plate.

A wearable robot for rehabilitation therapy is often shared by a group of patients in a clinic. If the wearable robot only consists of rigid links, the link dimensions usually need to be adjusted from time to time to fit different patients. It is then difficult to make sure these on-site adjustments could introduce the desired kinematic compatibility between the robot and each individual patient. more &raquo; ... de Anatomy Adaptive Assistances (AAA), which means the robot passively adapts to different patient anatomies while providing consistent motion assistances. However, the previous design also possesses drawbacks such as limited motion ranges and limited payload capabilities. This paper presents a kinematics-based type synthesis for the construction of a new continuum wearable shoulder robot, aiming at overcoming these drawbacks as well as maintaining the capabilities of providing AAA. Three structural concepts of such a continuum wearable shoulder robot are studied through kinematic modeling. One concept is eventually selected based on the comparison results. Preliminary experiments are also presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the selected design.

Here, we further investigate the antitumor mechanism of PAC-320, a compound among the polyoxometalates, in human prostate cancer. We demonstrate that PAC-320 is a broad-spectrum HDACi and could inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, we find that PAC-320 induces cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase and apoptosis. Mechanically, PAC-320 induced cell cycle arrest is associated with an increase of p21 and decrease of cyclin A and cyclin B1, while PAC-320 induced apoptosis is mediated through mitochondria apoptotic pathway and is closely associated with increase of BH3-only proteins Noxa and Hrk. Meanwhile, we demonstrate that p38 MAPK pathway is involved in PAC-320 induced antiproliferative activities in prostate cancer. Taken together, our data indicates that PAC-320 has potent prostate cancer inhibitory activity in vitro and in vivo, which is mediated by G2/M cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. www.impactjournals.com/oncotarget/

Increased expression of MMP9 is correlated with poor prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and its correlation with clinicopathologic features, including the survival of patients with NPC. Methods: Using real-time PCR, we detected the mRNA expression of MMP9 in normal nasopharyngeal tissues and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tissues. more &raquo; ... (116 male and 48 female) with age ranging from 17 to 80 years (median = 48.4 years) and 32 normal nasopharyngeal tissues. Cases with greater than or equal to 6 and less than 6 of the score value of cytoplasmic MMP9 immunostaining were regarded as high expression and low expression, respectively. The relationship between the expression levels of MMP9 and clinical features was analyzed. Results: The expression level of MMP9 mRNA was markedly greater in NPC tissues than that in the nasopharyngeal tissues. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the protein expression of MMP9 detected in NPC tissues was higher than that in the nasopharyngeal tissues (P = 0.004). In addition, high levels of MMP9 protein were positively correlated with the status of lymph node metastasis (N classification) (P = 0.002) and clinical stage (P < 0.001) of NPC patients. Patients with higher MMP9 expression had a significantly shorter overall survival time than did patients with low MMP9 expression. Multivariate analysis suggested that the level of MMP9 expression was an independent prognostic indicator (P = 0.008) for the survival of patients with NPC. Conclusion: High level of MMP9 expression is a potential unfavorable prognostic factor for patients with NPC.

Research on the Corrosion Behaviors of Austenitic Steel in Molten Aluminum Alloy

Die corrosion has been a concern during aluminum alloy die casting. The casting parameters play a significant role in causing corrosion, such as the temperature of the aluminum alloy melt and working time. In order to study the effect of temperature and working time on dynamic corrosion behaviors, SDHA steel was stirred in molten ADC12 aluminum alloy at 650–800 °C. more &raquo; ... EM) observations. The results show that the matrix reacts with aluminum alloy to form an Al8Fe2Si phase at experimental temperatures. The growth activation energy of the Al8Fe2Si phase is 89 kJ/mol. The dynamic corrosion rate rises with increasing temperature and holding time. The most serious corrosion was found when the experimental temperature reached 800 °C, which is closely related to the peeling of matrix and the formation of Al8Fe2Si at the grain boundary. Besides, the vanadium carbides in the matrix act as barriers to hinder the diffusion of Al and Si atoms effectively.

Elevated expression of CDK4 in lung cancer

The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression of Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) in lung cancer and its correlation with clinicopathologic features. Cases with cytoplasmic and nuclear CDK4 immunostaining score values greater than or equal to 7 were regarded as high expression while scores less than 7 were considered low expression. The correlation between the expression level of CDK4 and clinical features was analyzed. Furthermore, we used lentiviral-mediated shRNA to suppress the expression of CDK4 and investigate its function and molecular mechanism for mediating cell cycle progression. Results: The expression level of CDK4 protein was significantly increased in lung cancer tissues compared to normal tissues (P < 0.001). In addition, high levels of CDK4 protein were positively correlated with the status of pathology classification (P = 0.047), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.007), and clinical stage (P = 0.004) of lung cancer patients. Patients with higher CDK4 expression had a markedly shorter overall survival time than patients with low CDK4 expression. Multivariate analysis suggested the level of CDK4 expression was an independent prognostic indicator (P < 0.001) for the survival of patients with lung cancer. Use of lentiviral-mediated shRNA to inhibit the expression of CDK4 in lung cancer cell line A549 not only inhibited cell cycle progression, but also dramatically suppressed cell proliferation, colony formation, and migration.
