Detecting Speaker Personas from Conversational Texts [article]

Personas are useful for dialogue response prediction. However, the personas used in current studies are pre-defined and hard to obtain before a conversation. To tackle this issue, we study a new task, named Speaker Persona Detection (SPD), which aims to detect speaker personas based on the plain conversational text. In this task, a best-matched persona is searched out from candidates given the conversational text. This is a many-to-many semantic matching task because both contexts and personas
more » ... n SPD are composed of multiple sentences. The long-term dependency and the dynamic redundancy among these sentences increase the difficulty of this task. We build a dataset for SPD, dubbed as Persona Match on Persona-Chat (PMPC). Furthermore, we evaluate several baseline models and propose utterance-to-profile (U2P) matching networks for this task. The U2P models operate at a fine granularity which treat both contexts and personas as sets of multiple sequences. Then, each sequence pair is scored and an interpretable overall score is obtained for a context-persona pair through aggregation. Evaluation results show that the U2P models outperform their baseline counterparts significantly.

This paper proposes a new model, called condition-transforming variational autoencoder (CTVAE), to improve the performance of conversation response generation using conditional variational autoencoders (CVAEs). In conventional CVAEs , the prior distribution of latent variable z follows a multivariate Gaussian distribution with mean and variance modulated by the input conditions. more » ... osed CTVAE model, the latent variable z is sampled by performing a non-lineartransformation on the combination of the input conditions and the samples from a condition-independent prior distribution N (0; I). In our objective evaluations, the CTVAE model outperforms the CVAE model on fluency metrics and surpasses a sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) model on diversity metrics. In subjective preference tests, our proposed CTVAE model performs significantly better than CVAE and Seq2Seq models on generating fluency, informative and topic relevant responses.

Randomized Quaternion Singular Value Decomposition for Low-Rank Approximation [article]

This paper presents a randomized quaternion singular value decomposition (QSVD) algorithm for low-rank matrix approximation problems, which are widely used in color face recognition, video compression, and signal processing problems. With quaternion normal distribution based random sampling, the randomized QSVD algorithm projects a high-dimensional data to a low-dimensional subspace and then identifies an approximate range subspace of the quaternion matrix. Theoretical results show that the randomized QSVD algorithm can trace dominant singular value decomposition triplets of a quaternion matrix with acceptable accuracy. Numerical experiments also indicate the rationality of proposed theories. Applied to color face recognition problems, the randomized QSVD algorithm obtains higher recognition accuracies and behaves more efficient than the known Lanczos-based partial QSVD and a quaternion version of fast frequent directions algorithm.

Perinatal testosterone exposure potentiates vascular dysfunction by ERβ suppression in endothelial progenitor cells

Recent clinical cohort study shows that testosterone therapy increases cardiovascular diseases in men with low testosterone levels, excessive circulating androgen levels may play a detrimental role in the vascular system, while the potential mechanism and effect of testosterone exposure on the vascular function in offspring is still unknown. Our preliminary results showed that perinatal testosterone exposure in mice induces estrogen receptor β (ERβ) suppression in endothelial progenitor cells
more » ... PCs) in offspring but not mothers, while estradiol (E2) had no effect. Further investigation showed that ERβ suppression is due to perinatal testosterone exposure-induced epigenetic changes with altered DNA methylation on the ERβ promoter. During aging, EPCs with ERβ suppression mobilize to the vascular wall, differentiate into ERβ-suppressed mouse endothelial cells (MECs) with downregulated expression of SOD2 (mitochondrial superoxide dismutase) and ERRα (estrogen-related receptor α). This results in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and DNA damage, and the dysfunction of mitochondria and fatty acid metabolism, subsequently potentiating vascular dysfunction. Bone marrow transplantation of EPCs that overexpressed with either ERβ or a SIRT1 single mutant SIRT1-C152(D) that could modulate SIRT1 phosphorylation significantly ameliorated vascular dysfunction, while ERβ knockdown worsened the problem. We conclude that perinatal testosterone exposure potentiates vascular dysfunction through ERβ suppression in EPCs.

This paper presents a framework of Mirroring Mobile Phone in the Clouds (MMPC) to speed up data/computing intensive applications on a mobile phone by taking full advantage of the super computing power of the clouds. An application on the mobile phone is dynamically partitioned in such a way that the heavy-weighted part is always running on a mirrored server in the clouds while the light-weighted part remains on the mobile phone. Biological and medical researchers have discovered numerous transcription factors (TFs), microRNAs (miRNAs) and genes associated with Burkitt lymphoma (BL) through individual experiments; however, their regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. more » ... As and genes, and partially determined the pathogenesis mechanisms underlying BL. The BL-associated network consisted of BL-associated TFs, miRNAs and genes. It has been indicated that the network motif consisted of TFs, miRNAs and genes serve potential functions in numerous biological processes within cancer. Two of the most studied network motifs are feedback loop (FBL) and feed-forward loop (FFL). The important network motifs were extracted, including the FBL motif, 3-nodes FFL motif and 4-nodes motif, from BL-dysregulated and BL-associated networks, and 10 types of motifs were identified from BL-associated network. Finally, 26/31 FBL motifs, 45/75 3-nodes FFL motifs and 54/94 4-nodes motifs were obtained from the dysregulated/associated networks. A total of four TFs (E2F1, NFKB1, E2F4 and TCF3) exhibit complicated regulation associations in BL-associated networks. The biological network does not demonstrate the dysregulated status for healthy people. When the individual becomes unwell, their biological network exhibits a dysregulated status. If the dysregulated status is regulated to a normal status by a number of medical methods, the diseases may be treated successfully. BL-dysregulated networks serve important roles in pathogenesis mechanisms underlying BL regulation of the dysregulated network, which may be an effective strategy that contributes to gene therapy for BL.

Development and Reproduction ofMallada basalis(Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) on Artificial Diets

The green lacewing, Mallada basalis (Walker) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), has a broad prey range and effective searching abilities. Because rearing procedures based on natural or factitious foods for the larvae of this economically important predator are often time consuming and/or expensive, the main objective of our study was to develop an artificial diet suitable for mass rearing. We analyzed the development, survival, longevity, and reproduction of M. basalis (F1 generation) fed 3 artificial
more » ... iets. These diets were formulated based on those of Chrysoperla sinica Tjeder and Chrysopa pallens (Rambur) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). All 3 of the diets contained chicken egg, beer yeast powder, sucrose, trehalose, vitamin C, and potassium sorbate. The first artificial diet (AD1) also contained honey and distilled water. AD2 also included pupal hemolymph of the Chinese oak silk moth (Antheraea pernyi Guérin-Méneville; Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), and AD3 also included whole A. pernyi pupae, which had been blended into all of the ingredients. The 2nd instars reared on AD3 required 2.91 d to develop to 3rd instars, which was significantly less time than the 3.69 d required on AD2. However, 3rd instars reared on AD1 required 4.48 d to develop to the pupal stage, which was significantly shorter than 3rd instars on AD2 and AD3 at 6.92 and 5.68 d, respectively. The development time of pupae in the AD3 treatment was 8.18 d, which was significantly shorter than that of pupae in the AD1 and AD2 treatments at 9.05 and 10.00 d, respectively. There were significant differences in adult longevity among the 3 diets, and these longevities in the AD1, AD2, and AD3 treatments were 39.40, 4.75, and 30.11 d, respectively. The oviposition period was significantly longer for females reared on AD1 (22.70 d) than for females reared on AD3 (5.25 d). The oviposition rate and total number of eggs laid from AD1 (16.41 eggs/day and 476.67 eggs, respectively) were significantly greater than those from AD3 (3.11 eggs/day and 19.75 eggs respectively). Females reared on AD2 laid no eggs. There were significant differences in egg hatch and pupation rates among the 3 diets. The egg hatch and pupation rate were largest on AD1, i.e., 100.0% and 63.3%, respectively, whereas they were the least on AD2, i.e., 53.33% and 16.19%, respectively. There were significant differences in hatch rates from newly laid eggs (F2 generation) between AD1 and AD3, i.e., 70.4% and 63.0%, respectively. We found that M. basalis was able to develop and reproduce when fed artificial diets AD1 and AD3. However, AD1 was much better than AD3. The development and reproduction of M. basalis fed AD2 were unacceptable. AD1 contained twice the amount of chicken egg compared with AD2 and AD3, and egg yolk is known to be a high-quality component of diets for entomophagous insects. The diet AD1 was also the only one that contained honey. All the 3 diets contained trehalose, which can be a partial substitute for insect components. Our findings may contribute to the mass production of this economically important predatory green lacewing.

The solvability theory of an important self-adjoint polynomial matrix equation is presented, including the boundary of its Hermitian positive definite (HPD) solution and some sufficient conditions under which the (unique or maximal) HPD solution exists. The algebraic perturbation analysis is also given with respect to the perturbation of coefficient matrices. An efficient general iterative algorithm for the maximal or unique HPD solution is designed and tested by numerical experiments.
