Protective effect of naringenin on glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in cultured hippocampal cells
2015
Archives of Biological Sciences
Monosodium glutamate induces excitotoxicity in the central nervous system through hyperactivation of both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors, which leads to neuronal cell death. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of naringenin on excitotoxicity induced by glutamate in primary hippocampal neurons of neonatal mice. The expression levels of apoptosis-inducing proteins and as well as ischemic factors were observed by Western blot analysis. Immunocytochemistry

... morphometric analysis of hippocampal cells with or without glutamate and naringenin treatment were performed. We observed that naringenin regulated Erk1/2 and Akt phosphorylation and reduced the demise of dendrites due to glutamate exposure in cultured hippocampal neurons. Furthermore, naringenin induced the brain-derived neurotrophic factor and other neuroprotective cytokines, and markedly improved the survival rates of the neurons 24 h following glutamate exposure. The observed results suggest that the naturally occurring bioflavonoid (naringenin) exerts neuroprotective effects via highly specific molecular targets in neurons.

A Verifiable Quantum Secret Sharing Scheme Based on a Single Qubit
[article]
2020
arXiv
pre-print
To detect frauds from some internal participants or external attackers, some verifiable threshold quantum secret sharing schemes have been proposed. In this paper, we present a new verifiable threshold structure based on a single qubit using bivariate polynomial. First, Alice chooses an asymmetric bivariate polynomial and sends a pair of values from this polynomial to each participant. Then Alice and participants implement in sequence unitary transformation on the d-dimensional quantum state

... ed on unbiased bases, where those unitary transformations are contacted by this polynomial. Finally, security analysis shows that the proposed scheme can detect the fraud from external and internal attacks compared with the exiting schemes and is comparable to the recent schemes.
Notch Signaling Components
2016
Medicine
Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a lethal and aggressive malignancy. Currently, the identities of prognostic and predictive makers of NSCLC have not been fully established. Dysregulated Notch signaling has been implicated in many human malignancies, including NSCLC. However, the prognostic value of measuring Notch signaling and the utility of developing Notch-targeted therapies in NSCLC remain inconclusive. The present study investigated the association of individual Notch receptor and

... nd levels with lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) prognosis using the Kaplan-Meier plotte database. This online database encompasses 2437 lung cancer samples. Hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The results showed that higher Notch1, Notch2, JAG1, and DLL1 mRNA expression predicted better overall survival (OS) in lung ADC, but showed no significance in SCC patients. Elevated Notch3, JAG2, and DLL3 mRNA expression was associated with poor OS of ADC patients, but not in SCC patients. There was no association between Notch4 and OS in either lung ADC or SCC patients. In conclusion, the set of Notch1, Notch2, JAG1, DLL1 and that of Notch3, JAG2, DLL3 played opposing prognostic roles in lung ADC patients. Neither set of Notch receptors and ligands was indicative of lung SCC prognosis. Notch signaling could serve as promising marker to predict outcomes in lung ADC patients. The distinct features of lung cancer subtypes and Notch components should be considered when developing future Notch-targeted therapies. Cytotoxic indole alkaloids from Nauclea orientalis
2017
Figshare
A new indole alkaloid, nauclorienine (1), along with seven known alkaloids (2–8), were isolated from the stems and leaves of Nauclea orientalis. Among them, nauclorienine (1) was a new indole alkaloid holding a rare corynanthe-type skeleton, and the known compounds (2–8) were isolated from N. orientalis for the first time. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data analyses. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicities against five human

Association of decreased mean platelet volume with renal cell carcinoma
2017
International Journal of Clinical Oncology
Purpose: To research association between Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and tumor stage and grade in non-metastatic renal cell carcinomas in circumstances of hypoxia, thromboembolism, and ischemia, based on MPV increase. Material and methods: Data of 104 non-metastatic patients, in whom nephrectomy was done and whose pathology resulted in renal cell carcinoma, have been evaluated retrospectively. The patients were clinically classified as T1a, T1b, T2a, T2b according to TNM stage and as Fuhrman

... e 1, 2, 3, 4 according to pathology results. Preoperative mean platelet number and MPV values of the patients were compared with their tumor stage and grade. Results: Sixteen (15%) were in T1a, 41 (39%) were in T1b, 39 (38%) were in T2a, and 8 (7%) of the patients were in T2b clinical stage. According to pathology results, 21 (20%) were assessed as Fuhrman grade I, 59 (57%) were grade II, 22 (21%) were grade III, and 2 (2%) of the patients were grade IV. Mean MPV values were 8.50±1.39, 8.51±1.25, 8.65±1.12, and 8.95±0.07 in Grade I, II, III, IV, respectively. A positive correlation was present between mean MPV and grade (r= 0.052, p=0.599). As long as grade increases, mean MPV values were observed to increase. However, no statistically difference was determined between tumor grade and mean MPV and platelet (p values: 0.935 and 0.963, respectively). No statistically significant difference was detected between tumor stage and mean MPV and platelet (p values: 0.996 and 0.397, respectively). Conclusion: A positive correlation was observed to be between mean MPV values and tumor grade. However, no statistically significant difference was determined. It can be supported with the larger series that MPV for renal tumors, that is rapidly and expansively growing tumor, can be an effective biochemical indicator in early diagnosis, staging, and evaluation of response to treatment.
Aberrant Interhemispheric Connectivity in Obstructive Sleep Apnea–Hypopnea Syndrome
2018
Frontiers in Neurology
Objective: To determine the changes in interhemispheric functional coordination in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) relative to controls, using a recently introduced method of analysis: voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC). Methods: Twenty-nine patients with OSAHS and twenty-six normal sex-, age-, and education-matched controls were recruited and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained. We employed VMHC to analyze the

... ispheric functional connectivity differences between groups. The z-values of alterations in VMHC in brain region were correlated with clinical characteristics. results: Compared with controls, patients with OSAHS had significantly higher scores for body mass index (t = 5.749, P < 0.001), apnea-hypopnea index (AHI; t = 7.706, P < 0.001), oxygen desaturation index (t = 6.041, P < 0.001), and Epworth sleepiness scale (t = 3.711, P < 0.001), but significantly lower scores on the Rey-Osterrieth complex figure test-immediate recall (t = −3.727, P < 0.05). On the same basis, the VMHC showed significant increases in bilateral calcarine cortex and precuneus. Moreover, significant, positive correlations were found in only these areas between the AHI and the VMHC change coefficients (r = 0.399, P = 0.032; r = 0.378, P = 0.043). conclusion: We found a memory defect in patients with OSAHS. The correlation between the abnormal VMHC and the AHI in patients with OSAHS suggested that AHI might be a key factor in cognitive dysfunction, which might offer new insights into the neural pathophysiology underlying OSAHS-related cognitive deficits.
