Surface parameterizations have been widely applied to computer graphics and digital geometry processing. In this paper, we propose a novel stretch energy minimization (SEM) algorithm for the computation of equiareal parameterizations of simply connected open surfaces with a very small area distortion and a highly improved computational efficiency. In addition, the existence of nontrivial limit points of the SEM algorithm is guaranteed under some mild assumptions of the mesh quality. Numerical

Applications of the SEM on surface remeshing and surface registration for simply connected open surfaces are demonstrated thereafter. Thanks to the SEM algorithm, the computations for these applications can be carried out efficiently and robustly.

VEGF expression correlates with neuronal differentiation and predicts a favorable prognosis in patients with neuroblastoma
2017
Scientific Reports
Neuroblastoma (NB) is a childhood cancer with a low survival rate and great metastatic potential. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), an angiogenesis factor, has been found to be involved in CRT-related neuronal differentiation of NB cells. In this study, we further confirmed the role VEGF in NB through mouse xenograft model and clinical analysis from NB patients. In xenograft experiments, CRT overexpression effectively inhibited the tumor growth. In addition, the mRNA and protein levels

... of VEGF and differentiation marker GAP-43 were upregulated by induced CRT expression. However, no significant correlation between the expression level of VEGF and microvessel density was observed in human NB tumors, suggesting a novel mechanism of VEGF participating in NB tumorigenesis through an angiogenesis-independent pathway. In NB patients' samples, mRNA expression levels of CRT and VEGF were positively correlated. Furthermore, positive VEGF expression by immunostaining of NB tumors was found to correlate well with histological grade of differentiation and predicted a favorable prognosis. In conclusion, our findings suggest that VEGF is a favorable prognostic factor of NB and might affect NB tumor behavior through CRT-driven neuronal differentiation rather than angiogenesis that might shed light on a novel therapeutic strategy to improve the outcome of NB. Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy in infancy and the second most common extracranial solid tumor in childhood in Taiwan 1, 2 . It is derived from the sympatho-adrenal progenitor cells of the neural crest 3 . Children with NB exhibit a heterogeneous clinical course, from a favorable outcome with spontaneous differentiation into mature cells or regression of tumors to a poor prognosis with highly metastatic and undifferentiated tumors 3 . Although the overall outcome of NB patients has improved noticeably with recent therapeutic advances, approximately half of NB patients classified as high-risk group remain a poor prognosis with long-term survival rates no more than 40% 3, 4 . Recognizing new prognostic factors is therefore important for better understanding NB pathogenesis and developing tailored therapies that improve outcomes for NB patients. Calreticulin (CRT) is an important chaperone protein primarily localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and highly conserved across species 5 . The multi-functional roles of CRT in protein chaperoning, Ca 2+ homeostasis, modulating cell adhesion and regulating mRNA instability unveils its major involvement in various biological and pathologic processes 5, 6 . Accumulated evidence indicated that CRT plays an important role in the biology of 1

Identification of novel cancer fusion genes using chromosome breakpoint screening
2017
Oncology Reports
Gene fusion due to rearrangement or translocation of chromosomes is a powerful mutational mechanism during tumorigenesis. Several new high-resolution technologies have recently been developed to evaluate large numbers of small aberrations as candidate loci for fusion gene screening. In our previous whole-genome screening study using 500K SNP arrays, we identified more than 700 homozygous deletions (HDs) and amplicons in 23 cancer cell lines. To explore novel fusion genes in cancer, we

... d stringent criteria for defining HD and amplicon breakpoints. Then genomic PCR and sequencing analyses identified a fusion gene, FNDC3B-PRKCI, that resulted from chromosome intra-rearrangement. Western blotting and 3'-RACE analyses revealed that the chimeric transcript was an in-frame fusion between FNDC3B and PRKCI. Finally, cell migration and colony formation assays suggested that FNDC3B-PRKCI is a potential oncogene. Abbreviations: HD, homozygous deletion; SNP, single nucleotide polymorphism; FNDC3B, fibronectin type III domain containing 3B; PRKCI, protein kinase C iota; HCC, hepatocellular carcinoma; RACE, rapid amplification of cDNA ends
Caveolin-1 Provides Palliation for Adverse Hepatic Reactions in Hypercholesterolemic Rabbits

Caveolins are an essential component of cholesterol-rich invaginations of the plasma membrane known as caveolae. These flask-shaped, invaginated structures participate in a number of important cellular processes, including vesicular transport, cholesterol homeostasis, and signal transduction. We investigated the effects of CAV-1 on mitochondrial biogenesis and antioxidant enzymes in hypercholesterolemia-affected target organs. A total of eighteen male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into

... three groups: a normal-diet group, an untreated hypercholesterolemia-induced group, and a hypercholesterolemia-induced group that received intravenous administration of antennapedia-CAV-1 (AP-CAV-1) peptide every 2 days for 2 weeks. Serum biochemistry, CAV-1 distribution, neutral lipid distribution, mitochondrial morphology, biogenesis-mediated protein content, oxidative stress balance, antioxidant enzyme levels, and apoptotic cell death of liver tissue were analysed. Hepatic and circulating cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels differed significantly between the three groups (P,0.05). Immunohistochemical staining intensity of CAV-1 was greater in AP-CAV-1treated rabbits than in untreated rabbits, especially in the vicinity of the liver vasculature. The high levels of neutral lipids, malondialdehyde, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-c coactive 1a (PGC-1a), and nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1) seen in untreated hypercholesteremic animals were attenuated by administration of AP-CAV-1 (P,0.05). In addition, mitochondria in animals that received treatment exhibited darker electron-dense matrix and integrated cristae. Furthermore, the levels of ROS modulator 1 (Romo1) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-2, as well as catalase activity were significantly lower in CAV-1-treated hypercholesterolemic rabbits (P,0.05). AP-CAV-1 treatment also restored mitochondrial respiratory chain subunit protein content (OXPHOS complexes I-V), thereby preserving mitochondrial function (P,0.05). Furthermore, AP-CAV-1 treatment significantly suppressed apoptotic cell death, as evidenced by a reduction in the number of TUNEL-positive cells. Our results indirectly indicate that CAV-1 mediates the negative effects of PGC-1a on hepatic mitochondrial respiratory chain function, promotes the antioxidant enzyme defence system, and maintains mitochondrial biogenesis.
An Efficient Energy Minimization for Conformal Parameterizations

Surface parameterizations have been widely applied to digital geometry processing. In this paper, we propose an efficient conformal energy minimization (CEM) algorithm for computing conformal parameterizations of simply-connected open surfaces with a very small angular distortion and a highly improved computational efficiency. In addition, we generalize the proposed CEM algorithm to computing conformal parameterizations of multiply-connected surfaces. Furthermore, we prove the existence of a

Several numerical results show the efficiency and robustness of the CEM algorithm comparing to the existing state-ofthe-art algorithms. An application of the CEM on the surface morphing between simply-connected open surfaces is demonstrated thereafter. Thanks to the CEM algorithm, the whole computations for the surface morphing can be performed efficiently and robustly.
5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T gene polymorphism can influence age at onset of Parkinson's disease

A case-control study was designed to investigate a possible genetic susceptibility of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and assess whether the genetic polymorphism could be a predictor of levodopa-induced adverse effects in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) of Chinese descent living in Taiwan. There were 94 sporadic PD patients with levodopa therapy at least for five years and 146 control subjects, matched by sex and gender, in this study. Results revealed that there were no differences of the

... llelic and genotypic frequencies of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism between PD patients and the controls. Analysis of age at onset stratified by MTHFR C677T polymorphism showed a trend of early age at onset in the PD patients carrying with T allele. The genetic influence was particularly significant in late-onset PD (onset age at or older than 60 years) with an early age at onset for 3.4 years. However, the MTHFR C677T polymorphism was not associated with the risk to develop dyskinesia, motor fluctuation and psychosis induced by levodopa in PD patients. In conclusion, results of the study revealed that the MTHFR C677T polymorphism could significantly influence age at onset of PD in Chinese population, but neither as a genetic susceptibility nor as a predictor of levodopa-induced adverse effects in PD.

The Role of Guanxi in Chinese Tourists' Destination Loyalty
2018
Tourism Review International
The theory of guanxi, coming from the work in Chinese psychology, has been widely applied in marketing and management academy. Although tourism scholars have paid considerable attention to Chinese tourists, the use of Chinese psychology in explaining the market remains limited. The purpose of this study is to apply guanxi in explaining Chinese tourists' destination loyalty using Taiwan as a case study of a tourist destination. Based on the guanxi theory, the study results showed that cognitive

A Cu-metallized InGaP/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) using a Pd/Ge/Cu n-type ohmic contact, a Pt/Ti/Pt/Cu p-type ohmic contact, and a Ti/Pt/Cu interconnect has been fabricated for power applications. The 4 Â 20 mm 2 HBT had an output power of 11.25 dBm with a power-added efficiency of 35.1%. After applying current-accelerated stress for 24 h, the current gain remained larger than 125. The device was also annealed at 200 C for 24 h, and showed a slight decrease in output power from
