Pseudo-Spherical Contrastive Divergence
[article]
2021

Energy-based models (EBMs) offer flexible distribution parametrization. However, due to the intractable partition function, they are typically trained via contrastive divergence for maximum likelihood estimation. In this paper, we propose pseudo-spherical contrastive divergence (PS-CD) to generalize maximum likelihood learning of EBMs. PS-CD is derived from the maximization of a family of strictly proper homogeneous scoring rules, which avoids the computation of the intractable partition

... n and provides a generalized family of learning objectives that include contrastive divergence as a special case. Moreover, PS-CD allows us to flexibly choose various learning objectives to train EBMs without additional computational cost or variational minimax optimization. Theoretical analysis on the proposed method and extensive experiments on both synthetic data and commonly used image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and modeling flexibility of PS-CD, as well as its robustness to data contamination, thus showing its superiority over maximum likelihood and f-EBMs.

Neuroprotective terpenoids from the leaves of Viburnum odoratissimum
2018
Figshare
As a part of our ongoing search for neuroprotective compounds from natural products, two new iridoid glycosides, vibsansuspenside A-B (1-2), along with five known terpenoids (3-7), were isolated from the dry leaves of Viburnum odoratissimum. Their chemical structures were well determined by means of NMR spectroscopic data as well as HRESIMS analysis. All compounds were detected for their neuroprotective effects against H2O2-induced damage in human dopaminergic neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y).

Correlation between coronary artery disease and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and analysis of risk factors
2018
Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine
The correlation between coronary artery disease (CAD) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) was investigated to analyze its risk factors. A total of 84 patients with suspected CAD due to chest tightness and pain or nocturnal angina, were selected. They were admitted and received coronary angiography in The Affiliated Hospital of Medical College Qingdao University from March, 2016 to June, 2017. The vital signs were monitored, and the sleep monitoring was performed before and after

... angiography. Before angiography, the fasting blood was drawn for blood biochemical detection, followed by routine electrocardiogram and echocardiographic examination. In addition, the body mass index was calculated and whether patients suffered from hypertension and diabetes mellitus was observed. The patients were divided into the control group (patients with a negative coronary angiography) and the CAD group (patients with a positive coronary angiography). There were 34 cases in the control group, including 21 cases of OSAS (61.76%), and 50 in the CAD group, including 40 cases of OSAS (80.00%). Statistical analysis revealed that there were statistically significant differences in the apnea hypopnea index (AHI), lowest oxygen saturation, degree of coronary stenosis (Gensini score) and triglyceride level between the two groups (P<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the cholesterol level and prevalence rates of hypertension and diabetes mellitus between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis revealed that smoking and AHI >20 were the risk factors of CAD (OR=7.036 and 5.377). Thus, CAD is closely correlated with OSAS and AHI >20 is one of the risk factors of CAD.

You Should Look at All Objects
[article]
2022
arXiv

Feature pyramid network (FPN) is one of the key components for object detectors. However, there is a long-standing puzzle for researchers that the detection performance of large-scale objects are usually suppressed after introducing FPN. To this end, this paper first revisits FPN in the detection framework and reveals the nature of the success of FPN from the perspective of optimization. Then, we point out that the degraded performance of large-scale objects is due to the arising of improper

... k-propagation paths after integrating FPN. It makes each level of the backbone network only has the ability to look at the objects within a certain scale range. Based on these analysis, two feasible strategies are proposed to enable each level of the backbone to look at all objects in the FPN-based detection frameworks. Specifically, one is to introduce auxiliary objective functions to make each backbone level directly receive the back-propagation signals of various-scale objects during training. The other is to construct the feature pyramid in a more reasonable way to avoid the irrational back-propagation paths. Extensive experiments on the COCO benchmark validate the soundness of our analysis and the effectiveness of our methods. Without bells and whistles, we demonstrate that our method achieves solid improvements (more than 2%) on various detection frameworks: one-stage, two-stage, anchor-based, anchor-free and transformer-based detectors.
