Evaluation of Result Merging Strategies for Metasearch Engines
[chapter]
2005
Lecture Notes in Computer Science
Result merging is a key component in a metasearch engine. Once the results from various search engines are collected, the metasearch system merges them into a single ranked list. The effectiveness of a metasearch engine is closely related to the result merging algorithm it employs. In this paper, we investigate a variety of resulting merging algorithms based on a wide range of available information about the retrieved results, from their local ranks, their titles and snippets, to the full

... nts of these results. The effectiveness of these algorithms is then compared experimentally based on 50 queries from the TREC Web track and 10 most popular general-purpose search engines. Our experiments yield two important results. First, simple result merging strategies can outperform Google. Second, merging based on the titles and snippets of retrieved results can outperform that based on the full documents.
MySearchView
2007
Proceedings of the 2007 ACM SIGMOD international conference on Management of data - SIGMOD '07
In this paper, we describe MySearchView -a system for assembling search engines into metasearch engines. With this system, any user can create a metasearch engine by simply letting the system know the URLs of the search engines the user wants to be included and the metasearch engine will be built fully automatically. In this paper, the main steps of building metasearch engines will be sketched. We will also outline our plan to demonstrate all the features of MySearchView.

Annotating Search Results from Web Databases
2013
IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering
An increasing number of databases have become web accessible through HTML form-based search interfaces. The data units returned from the underlying database are usually encoded into the result pages dynamically for human browsing. For the encoded data units to be machine processable, which is essential for many applications such as deep web data collection and Internet comparison shopping, they need to be extracted out and assigned meaningful labels. In this paper, we present an automatic

... tion approach that first aligns the data units on a result page into different groups such that the data in the same group have the same semantic. Then, for each group we annotate it from different aspects and aggregate the different annotations to predict a final annotation label for it. An annotation wrapper for the search site is automatically constructed and can be used to annotate new result pages from the same web database. Our experiments indicate that the proposed approach is highly effective.
Association between proton pump inhibitors and hepatic encephalopathy

& aims: Several studies have shown that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) use can increase the risk of developing hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in patients with liver dysfunction. However, no definite conclusion is drawn because of study design limitations. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to explore the association between PPIs and HE. Methods: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from inception until November 2016. Data from the identified studies were combined using a random

... effects model, and odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. Results: Three case-control studies were included. Compared with nonusers, hepatic insufficiency patients receiving PPIs therapy had a significantly increased risk of developing HE (OR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.15-2.69), with notable heterogeneity (I 2 = 61.4%, P = .075) and publication bias. No relevance was found between PPIs and HE after using the trim and fill method (OR = 1.360, 95%CI: 0.909-2.035, P = .135). Conclusions: PPIs are associated with a higher risk of HE among patients with chronic and acute liver dysfunction. A final conclusion cannot be drawn because of the limited number of studies and a lack of prospective studies. Abbreviations: HE = hepatic encephalopathy, PPIs = proton pump inhibitors, SBP = spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, SIBO = small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
AllInOneNews

Proceedings of the 2007 ACM SIGMOD international conference on Management of data - SIGMOD '07
AllInOneNews is the largest news metasearch engine in the world, connecting to over 1,000 news sites over 150 countries. Implementing a large-scale metasearch engine like AllInOneNews needs to overcome unique challenges not faced by building small metasearch engines such as developing highly scalable search engine selection techniques. In this paper, we discuss these unique challenges and our solutions to these challenges. We also discuss some novel features of AllInOneNews such as highly

... ted solution and semantic query match. This paper also reports the results of a comparative evaluation of three commercial news search systems, one search engine -Google News and two metasearch engines -Mamma News and AllInOneNews. Several measures such as effectiveness, diversity and time-sensitivity are used to perform the comparison. Another contribution of this paper is that we introduce a novel scheme to compare multiple news search systems in a combined measure that takes both relevance and time-sensitivity of retrieved information into consideration.

N6-methyladenosine associated prognostic model in hepatocellular carcinoma
2020
Annals of Translational Medicine
N6-methyladenosine (m6A), the most internal mRNA modification, is involved in various cancers. However, the function of m6A in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still not well explored. Here, we aimed to develop a prognostic model consist of m6A associated genes in HCC. The mRNA expression profiles and the corresponding clinical information from the patients with HCC were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, m6A differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened by

... Lasso and multivariate Cox regression analyses to develop the prognostic model. The differentially expressed m6A genes in HCC tissues were verified by quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). The DEGs were obtained between the HCC (n=374) and normal tissues (n=50). Nine m6A genes were correlated with the prognosis, and five of them (KIAA1429, METTL3, YTHDF1, YTHDF2, ZC3H13) were included in the prognostic model by Lasso regression analyses. Four genes (KIAA1429, METTL3, YTHDF1, YTHDF2) were proved significantly high expression in our ten pairs of matched HCC and normal tissues by PCR. The HCC patients were divided into two groups (high- and low-risk) according to the risk score. The high-risk group associated with a significant poor prognosis (P=1.72×10-4). The time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis confirmed the good performance of this prognostic model (AUC =0.617). After univariate [P<0.001, 1.213 (1.136-1.295)] and multivariate Cox regression analyses [P<0.001, 1.198 (1.115-1.288)] by combined with other clinical factors, this prognostic model was identified as an independent prognostic factor of HCC patients. The m6A genes were differentially expressed between HCC and normal tissues, and associated with the prognosis of HCC.

Neoadjuvant therapy and immunotherapy strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma
2020
American Journal of Cancer Research
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers with high mortality rate worldwide. Due to aggressive and invasive characteristics of HCC, poor prognosis is often displayed at advanced stages while therapeutic options are limited. Liver resection is still an essential curative-intent treatment in HCC management, while locoregional and systematic therapies made promising advances that may improve the proportion and outcomes of patients who are surgical candidates. In this

... we discussed status of currently available neoadjuvant treatments aimed at improving resectability and reducing recurrence rates. More than ever, in order to implement this therapeutic concepts and exploit the full potential of neoadjuvant treatment strategies, it is of utmost importance to use more high-level evidence to guide treatment decision making. Unfortunately, the use of preoperative treatments is not sponsored by tough evidence and consensus guidelines are absent.
Towards Deeper Understanding of the Search Interfaces of the Deep Web
2007
World wide web (Bussum)
Many databases have become Web-accessible through form-based search interfaces (i.e., HTML forms) that allow users to specify complex and precise queries to access the underlying databases. In general, such a Web search interface can be considered as containing an interface schema with multiple attributes and rich semantic/meta information; however, the schema is not formally defined in HTML. Many Web applications, such as Web database integration and deep Web crawling, require the construction

... of the schemas. In this paper, we first propose a schema model for representing complex search interfaces, and then present a layout-expression based approach to automatically extract the logic attributes from search interfaces. We also rephrase the identification of different types of semantic information as a classification problem, and design several Bayesian classifiers to help derive semantic information from extracted attributes. A system, WISE-iExtractor, has been implemented to automatically construct the schema from any Web search interfaces. Our experimental results on real search interfaces indicate that this system is highly effective.
Should preoperative biliary drainage be routinely performed for obstructive jaundice with resectable tumor?
2013
Hepatobiliary surgery and nutrition
Obstructive jaundice is a common clinical manifestation of malignant lesions adjacent to extrahepatic bile duct, ampulla or pancreatic head. Animal experiments and some clinical observations have demonstrated that preoperative biliary drainage could improve liver function as well as reduce endotoxemia, thereby reducing the incidence of perioperative complications. However, a number of randomized, controlled studies have found that preoperative biliary drainage failed to improve prognosis or

... ce the incidence of perioperative complications; in contrast, it might increase the incidence of complications and cause extra financial burden on patients. Thus, whether preoperative biliary drainage should be performed or not is controversial. Since clinical randomized controlled studies are more relevant in clinical setting, we believe that preoperative biliary drainage should not be routinely performed for obstructive jaundice with resectable tumors. More randomized, controlled, prospective studies should be conducted for further exploration.
Automatic Extraction of Publication Time from News Search Results
2006
22nd International Conference on Data Engineering Workshops (ICDEW'06)
The publication time of a page can have a big impact on its relevance to a query, especially for time-sensitive pages such as news items. For news search engines, the publication time of news items can usually be found in the returned search result records. In this paper, we introduce a method that can automatically extract the publication time for each news story returned from news search engines based on several important observations we made. We also introduce a wrapper implementation for
