Dual Teaching: A Practical Semi-supervised Wrapper Method [article]

Semi-supervised wrapper methods are concerned with building effective supervised classifiers from partially labeled data. Though previous works have succeeded in some fields, it is still difficult to apply semi-supervised wrapper methods to practice because the assumptions those methods rely on tend to be unrealistic in practice. For practical use, this paper proposes a novel semi-supervised wrapper method, Dual Teaching, whose assumptions are easy to set up. Dual Teaching adopts two external
more » ... opts two external classifiers to estimate the false positives and false negatives of the base learner. Only if the recall of every external classifier is greater than zero and the sum of the precision is greater than one, Dual Teaching will train a base learner from partially labeled data as effectively as the fully-labeled-data-trained classifier. The effectiveness of Dual Teaching is proved in both theory and practice.

Human behaviors exhibit ubiquitous correlations in many aspects, such as individual and collective levels, temporal and spatial dimensions, content, social and geographical layers. With rich Internet data of online behaviors becoming available, it attracts academic interests to explore human mobility similarity from the perspective of social network proximity. Simulating and imitating the neuronal network of humans or mammals is a popular topic that has been explored for many years in the fields of pattern recognition and computer vision. more » ... tex, when a neuron is stimulated by an external periodic signal, the interspike-interval (ISI) distributions represent a multimodal distribution. This phenomenon cannot be explained by all PCNN models. By analyzing the working mechanism of the PCNN, we present a novel neuron model of the primary visual cortex consisting of a continuous-coupled neural network (CCNN). Our model inherited the threshold exponential decay and synchronous pulse oscillation property of the original PCNN model, and it can exhibit chaotic behavior consistent with the testing results of cat primary visual cortex neurons. Therefore, our CCNN model is closer to real visual neural networks. For image segmentation tasks, the algorithm based on CCNN model has better performance than the state-of-art of visual cortex neural network model. The strength of our approach is that it helps neurophysiologists further understand how the primary visual cortex works and can be used to quantitatively predict the temporal-spatial behavior of real neural networks. CCNN may also inspire engineers to create brain-inspired deep learning networks for artificial intelligence purposes.

Chaos is associated with stochasticity, complex, irregular motion, etc. It has some peculiar properties such as ergodicity, highly initial value sensitivity, non-periodicity and long-term unpredictability. These pseudo random features lead chaotic systems to enormous applications such as random number generator, image encryption and secure communication. In general, the concept of chaos is never associated with similarity. However, we found the chaotic systems belonging to one chaos family
more » ... e chaos family (OCF) have similar dynamic behavior, which is a novel characteristic of chaos. In this work, three classical chaotic system family are studied, which are Lorenz family, Chua family and hyperbolic sine family. These systems contain different derived chaotic systems (Lorenz system, Chen system and L\"u system), different order chaotic systems (Chua family and hyperbolic sine family), and different kinds of chaotic systems (chaos and hyper-chaos). Their PSPs demonstrate that there exist strong correlation in OCF. Moreover, we found that high order/dimensional chaotic systems will inherit all dynamic behavior of lower ones, and the similarity will decrease as the order/dimensional goes higher, which is analogous to genetic process in biology. All of these features are quantitatively evaluated by PPMCC and SSIM.

We argue the importance of the number and diversity of common friends, with a counter intuitive finding that the number of common friends has no positive impact on mobility similarity while the diversity plays a key role, disagreeing with previous studies. Our analysis provides a novel view for better understanding the coupling between human online and offline behaviors, and will help model and predict human behaviors based on social proximity. Understanding the trajectories of human daily mobility and the underlying mechanism governing their patterns is important for traffic control 1,2 , city planning 3,4 , public health 5,6 , disaster relief 7 and mobile marketing 8, 9 . Due to the lack of data, human mobility was approximately described by random walk, Lévy fight or other diffusion processes in the past 10,11 . However, in recent years, the availability of massive digitized human behaviors allows quantitatively investigating human mobility and its associated factors such as living area 12 , personal preference 13 , social contacts 14 , etc. Scientists have uncovered various new statistical characteristics of human mobility unlike traditional cognitions, including heavy-tailed distribution of inter-event time and displacement distance, spatially confined living region, high regularity, periodicity and predictability 10, 12, 15, 16 . The newly appeared data sources, like bank note, mobile phone, vehicle Global Positioning System (GPS) and Location-based Social Network (LBSN), make it possible to combine the study of human mobility with location context and social relationship. For example, the explosion of online social network services provides a platform for various kinds of purposes, such as making friends, getting information, or even hunting jobs. It gains increasing interests in academia and industry to explore the mutual influence between human mobility and social connections, which has significant value in many fields such as location prediction, location recommendation, friend recommendation 17,18 , even social-economic analysis [19] [20] [21] . Previous studies reveal that human offline behaviors are highly correlated with their closely connected online friends. Theoretically, a study based on mobile phone records reveals a scaling relationship between human mobility and communication pattern 22 . Empirically, it has been found that social connections drive 10-30% daily trips, especially for the long-distance travels 14,23 . Geographically closely lived individuals are more probable to be online friends than those live far apart 24 . People tend to maintain social contacts when they change their living environment or migrate away 25,26 , even after disasters like earthquake 7 . Besides, researchers find that the mobility similarity between individual trajectories is correlated with social proximity, revealing the relation between moving pattern in physical space and social network structure in cyber space. Online connected individuals are more similar in mobility than disconnected ones 27 . Symmetrically, the more similar individuals are in mobility patterns, the more frequent they maintain online communication, and the more common friends they have online 28 . Previous researchers also verified that the micro-structure of social networks has significant impact on social contagion and relationship 29-32 , suggesting that there are great differences of intimacy between friends even they have the same number of common friends. more » ... ve designed a surface-grafting strategy to directly synthesize an atomically dispersed Fe-N 4 /C electrocatalyst applied to the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Through an esterification process in organic solution, metal-containing precursors were anchored on the surface of carbon substrates. The covalent bonding effect could suppress the formation of aggregated particles during heat treatment. Melamine was further introduced as both a cost-effective nitrogen resource and blocking agent retarding the migration of metal atoms. The optimized catalyst has proven to have abundant atomically dispersed Fe-N 4 active sites with enhanced ORR catalytic performance in acid condition. This method has provided new feasible ideas for the synthesis of SACs.
