Predict the Rover Mobility over Soft Terrain using Articulated Wheeled Bevameter [article]

Robot mobility is critical for mission success, especially in soft or deformable terrains, where the complex wheel-soil interaction mechanics often leads to excessive wheel slip and sinkage, causing the eventual mission failure. To improve the success rate, online mobility prediction using vision, infrared imaging, or model-based stochastic methods have been used in the literature. The proposed bevameter, which emulates the traditional terramechanics tests such as pressure-sinkage and shear experiments, can measure contact parameters ahead of the rover's body in real-time, and predict the slip and sinkage of supporting wheels over the probed region. Based on the predicted mobility, the rover can select a safer path in order to avoid dangerous regions such as those covered with quicksand. Compared to the literature, our proposed method can avoid the complicated terramechanics modeling and time-consuming stochastic prediction; it can also mitigate the inaccuracy issues arising in non-contact vision-based methods. We also conduct multiple experiments to validate the proposed approach.

Redundancy Reduction for Sensor Deployment in Prosthetic Socket: A Case Study

The irregular pressure exerted by a prosthetic socket over the residual limb is one of the major factors that cause the discomfort of amputees using artificial limbs. By deploying the wearable sensors inside the socket, the interfacial pressure distribution can be studied to find the active regions and rectify the socket design. In this case study, a clustering-based analysis method is presented to evaluate the density and layout of these sensors, which aims to reduce the local redundancy of

In particular, a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and K-means algorithm are employed to find the clustering results of the sensor data, taking the pressure measurement of a predefined sensor placement as the input. Then, one suitable clustering result is selected to detect the layout redundancy from the input area. After that, the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) is used as a similarity metric to guide the removal of redundant sensors and generate a new sparser layout. The Jenson–Shannon Divergence (JSD) and the mean pressure are applied as posterior validation metrics that compare the pressure features before and after sensor removal. A case study of a clinical trial with two sensor strips is used to prove the utility of the clustering-based analysis method. The sensors on the posterior and medial regions are suggested to be reduced, and the main pressure features are kept. The proposed method can help sensor designers optimize sensor configurations for intra-socket measurements and thus assist the prosthetists in improving the socket fitting.

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) and their variants have received significant attention and achieved start-of-the-art performances on various recommendation tasks. However, many existing GCN models tend to perform recursive aggregations among all related nodes, which arises severe computational burden. Moreover, they favor multi-layer architectures in conjunction with complicated modeling techniques. Though effective, the excessive amount of model parameters largely hinder their applications

To this end, in this paper, we propose the single-layer GCN model which is able to achieve superior performance along with remarkably less complexity compared with existing models. Our main contribution is three-fold. First, we propose a principled similarity metric named distribution-aware similarity (DA similarity), which can guide the neighbor sampling process and evaluate the quality of the input graph explicitly. We also prove that DA similarity has a positive correlation with the final performance, through both theoretical analysis and empirical simulations. Second, we propose a simplified GCN architecture which employs a single GCN layer to aggregate information from the neighbors filtered by DA similarity and then generates the node representations. Moreover, the aggregation step is a parameter-free operation, such that it can be done in a pre-processing manner to further reduce red the training and inference costs. Third, we conduct extensive experiments on four datasets. The results verify that the proposed model outperforms existing GCN models considerably and yields up to a few orders of magnitude speedup in training, in terms of the recommendation performance.

Research on Clothing Simulation Design Based on Three-dimensional Image Analysis

Traditional clothing design models based on adaptive meshes cannot reflect. To solve this problem, a clothing simulation design model based on 3D image analysis technology is established. The model uses feature extraction and description of image evaluation parameters, and establishes the mapping relationship between image features and simulation results by using the optimal parameter values, thereby obtaining a three-dimensional image simulation analysis environment. In order to reduce the eyelash influencing on iris recognition rate, an eyelashes detection algorithm is proposed based on adaptive threshold. Based on the iris localization, gray morphological operation is used to accurately localize eyelids. Gaussian Random Process and Its Application for Detecting the Ionospheric Disturbances Using GPS

Usually, ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) variation with time can be viewed as a stationary random process under quiet conditions. However, sudden events of the Sun and the Earth such as solar flare and sudden commencement of geomagnetic storms may induce the disturbances of the ionosphere, so that the stationary random process is broken; the statistical model parameters change much. Based on this fact, here we make use of the time series of TEC and the autocovariance function of the
more &raquo; ... tionary process to construct independent identical distribution Gauss sample so that the 2 χ test can be used to detect the abnormity hidden in the sequence. In addition, GPS data from several IGS sites in China during the severe solar flare occurred on 14th July, 2000 are used to verify the method. The results indicate that the disturbances caused by the solar flare can be effectively detected.

Satellite Observed Environmental Changes over the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

We use satellite observed and model atmospheric variables, including land surface temperature, snowfall, snow extent, precipitation, and water vapor contents to study the feasibility of quantifying anthropogenic climate change over high elevation areas such as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. more &raquo; ... that biases exist between temperature observations and model data 0.29 ~ 3.12°C, AIRS and JRA-25, respectively. The trends for each of the atmospheric variables at best have a qualitative agreement, presumably because the data spans of satellite observations are too short (7 ~ 10 years). The temperature trends for 4000 ~ 5000 m over the Plateau are estimated to be 0.01 ~ 0.05°C yr -1 , qualitatively agreeing with the published rate of 0.3°C decade -1 over the last three decades using in situ data.

To determine the location of the acoustic emission source is one of the main purpose of the acoustic emission test. The accuracy of positioning reflects the degree of coincidence between the position of the sound source and the source location of the actual active defects. Time difference location method and zone location method are the main methods of acoustic emission source location. However, the time difference positioning method has high reliability, and therefore, most of the tests and
more &raquo; ... ustic emission instruments use time difference method to locate the source of acoustic emission signal. Three point time difference position method and the non-iterative multipoint position method are employed to locate experiment to different types of acoustic emission signals collected. Based on the positioning results, three point time difference positioning method and the non-iteration multipoint positioning method can better position acoustic emission source. However, when the sensor receives the small signal time difference, three point time difference positioning method has large error. The non-iteration multipoint positioning method has positioning advantage when more than four sensors can receive an event signal.
