2022 arXiv   pre-print
Recently, vision-language joint representation learning has proven to be highly effective in various scenarios. In this paper, we specifically adapt vision-language joint learning for scene text detection, a task that intrinsically involves cross-modal interaction between the two modalities: vision and language, since text is the written form of language. Concretely, we propose to learn contextualized, joint representations through vision-language pre-training, for the sake of enhancing the
more » ... ormance of scene text detectors. Towards this end, we devise a pre-training architecture with an image encoder, a text encoder and a cross-modal encoder, as well as three pretext tasks: image-text contrastive learning (ITC), masked language modeling (MLM) and word-in-image prediction (WIP). The pre-trained model is able to produce more informative representations with richer semantics, which could readily benefit existing scene text detectors (such as EAST and PSENet) in the down-stream text detection task. Extensive experiments on standard benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed paradigm can significantly improve the performance of various representative text detectors, outperforming previous pre-training approaches. The code and pre-trained models will be publicly released.

A quantum cascade (QC) laser-based spectrometer is developed to measure trace gases in air. The proposed spectrometer is tested for N2O, and the results presented in this letter. This system takes advantage of recent technology in QC lasers by utilizing intra-pulse scan spectroscopy, which allows high sensitive measurement. Without calibration gases, the gas concentration can be calculated with scan integration and the corresponding values from the HITRAN04 database. By analyzing the Allan

2015 Scientific Reports
Intriguing experimental results raised the question about the fundamental mechanisms governing the electron-hole coupling induced bipolar thermal conduction in semiconductors. Our combined theoretical analysis and experimental measurements show that in semiconductors bipolar thermal transport is in general a "conductivity-limiting" phenomenon, and it is thus controlled by the carrier mobility ratio and by the minority carrier partial electrical conductivity for the intrinsic and extrinsic

We have successfully demonstrated bipolar thermal conductivity reduction in doped semiconductors via electronic band structure modulation and/or preferential minority carrier scatterings. We expect this study to be beneficial to the current interests in optimizing thermoelectric properties of narrow gap semiconductors.

2019 arXiv   pre-print
Given a graph G, a source node s and a target node t, the personalized PageRank (PPR) of t with respect to s is the probability that a random walk starting from s terminates at t. An important variant of the PPR query is single-source PPR (SSPPR), which enumerates all nodes in G, and returns the top-k nodes with the highest PPR values with respect to a given source s. PPR in general and SSPPR in particular have important applications in web search and social networks, e.g., in Twitter's
more » ... ollow recommendation service. However, PPR computation is known to be expensive on large graphs, and resistant to indexing. Consequently, previous solutions either use heuristics, which do not guarantee result quality, or rely on the strong computing power of modern data centers, which is costly. Motivated by this, we propose effective index-free and index-based algorithms for approximate PPR processing, with rigorous guarantees on result quality. We first present FORA, an approximate SSPPR solution that combines two existing methods Forward Push (which is fast but does not guarantee quality) and Monte Carlo Random Walk (accurate but slow) in a simple and yet non-trivial way, leading to both high accuracy and efficiency. Further, FORA includes a simple and effective indexing scheme, as well as a module for top-k selection with high pruning power. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed solutions are orders of magnitude more efficient than their respective competitors. Notably, on a billion-edge Twitter dataset, FORA answers a top-500 approximate SSPPR query within 1 second, using a single commodity server.

Application of Mathematical Economic Model in Financial System in Manufacturing Industry

Boqi Tang, Wenqing Wu
2021 Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing
In the field of economic research, most of the sample data is not obtained based on controllable experiments but generated during the normal operation of the economic system. Therefore, the change of an economic variable is usually not caused by a single change of a cause variable. It is the result of a combination of multiple factors. Therefore, it is necessary to study the application of mathematical intelligent computing in computer intelligent manufacturing system. The purpose of this paper
more » ... is to explore the application of mathematical intelligent computing in computer intelligent manufacturing system. For this reason, this paper uses the furnace temperature control model to carry out simulation experiment. In this simulation experiment, three algorithms of mathematical intelligent computing are mainly used, including BPES intelligent computing method, genetic algorithm, and MARS algorithm. The research results show that the superparameter optimization based on MARS has high efficiency, and the best result, the worst result, the average result, the variance, and the average time of multiple independent runs are controlled below 0.03 s. In this experiment, when the hidden layer node is 9, the prediction error value is the smallest, and the model simulation curve is basically consistent with the measured curve trend. In the simulation experiment of this paper, these three algorithms have shown good results in their respective links.

2019 Plant Physiology
Stigma and ovule initiation is essential for sexual reproduction in flowering plants. However, the mechanism underlying the initiation of stigma and ovule primordia remains elusive. We identified a stigma-less mutant of rice (Oryza sativa) and revealed that it was caused by the mutation in the PINOID (OsPID) gene. Unlike the pid mutant that shows typical pin-like inflorescences in maize (Zea mays) and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), the ospid mutant does not display any defects in
more » ... nce development and flower initiation, and fails to develop normal ovules in most spikelets. The auxin activity in the young pistil of ospid was lower than that in the wild-type pistil. Furthermore, the expression of most auxin response factor genes was down-regulated, and OsETTIN1, OsETTIN2, and OsMONOPTEROS lost their rearrangements of expression patterns during pistil and stamen primordia development in ospid Moreover, the transcription of the floral meristem marker gene, OSH1, was down-regulated and FLORAL ORGAN NUMBER4, the putative ortholog of Arabidopsis CLAVATA3, was up-regulated in the pistil primordium of ospid These results suggested that the meristem proliferation in the pistil primordium might be arrested prematurely in ospid Based on these results, we propose that the OsPID-mediated auxin signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the regulation of rice stigma and ovule initiation by maintaining the floral meristem.

The Application of IRT and MIRT in Test Vertical Equating

Yi WANG, Wenqing TANG, Jing LIU, Minqiang ZHANG, Ming LI, Guangming LI
2014 Advances in Psychological Science
Test vertical equating refers to transforming the performance of students in tests of various levels to the same scale. Item Response Theory (IRT) and Multidimensional Item Response Theory (MIRT) are the main methods used in vertical equating. IRT method is an effective way to build a vertical scale because IRT models impose no requirement on the distribution of test-takers' ability and that item parameters are independent of the samples. However, its application is restricted when the test

MIRT is a combination of IRT and factor analysis, making it an important tool in vertical equating to estimate ability parameter and item parameter precisely in multidimensional test. Current researches focus on the applicability of IRT and MIRT, calibration method and parameter estimation method in vertical equating and comparison study of the two methods. Future studies should concentrate on including more variables when comparing IRT and MIRT in order to expand their applications.

Air-sea interaction at an oceanic front: Implications for frontogenesis and primary production

Dake Chen, W. Timothy Liu, Wenqing Tang, Zhiren Wang
2003 Geophysical Research Letters
1] Based on recent satellite observations, we hypothesize that there exists a significant air-sea interaction at the shelfbreak front in the East China Sea. An idealized oceanatmosphere coupled model was designed to test this hypothesis and to study the physical processes involved in such an interaction, with emphasis on the oceanic part. A positive feedback between ocean and atmosphere was identified in the model and its consequences were evaluated. We found that air-sea interaction, when

The resulting frontal circulation and vertical mixing could bring nutrient-rich subsurface water into the surface euphotic zone, thus making the frontal region a conspicuous place for primary production.
