Synchronized output regulation of nonlinear multi-agent systems
[article]
2013
arXiv
pre-print
This paper considers the synchronized output regulation (SOR) problem of nonlinear multi-agent systems with switching graph. The SOR means that all agents regulate their outputs to synchronize on the output of a predefined common exosystem. Each agent constructs its local exosystem with the same dynamics as that of the common exosystem and exchanges the state information of the local exosystem. It is shown that the SOR is solvable under the assumptions same as that for nonlinear output

Favorable prognosis of female patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma
2013
Chinese Journal of Cancer
The female sex is traditionally considered a favorable prognostic factor for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, no particular study has reported this phenomenon. To explore the prognostic impact of gender on patients with NPC after definitive radiotherapy, we reviewed the clinical data of 2063 consecutive patients treated between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2003 in the Sun Yat鄄 sen University Cancer Center. The median follow鄄 up for the whole series was 81 months. The female and

... e patients with early stage disease comprised 49.4% and 28.1% of the patient population, respectively. Both the 5鄄 year overall survival (OS) and disease鄄 specific survival (DSS) rates of female patients were significantly higher than those of male patients (OS: 79% vs. 69%, P < 0.001; DSS: 81% vs. 70%, P < 0.001). For patients with locoregionally advanced NPC, the 5鄄 year OS and DSS rates of female vs. male patients were 74% vs. 63% (P < 0.001) and 76% vs. 64%, respectively (P < 0.001). A multivariate analysis showed that gender, age, and TNM stage were independent prognostic factors for the 5鄄 year OS and DSS of NPC patients. The favorable prognosis of female patients is not only attributed to the early diagnosis and treatment but might also be attributed to some intrinsic factors of female patients.

Friendship Prediction in Composite Social Networks
[article]
2014
arXiv
pre-print
Friendship prediction is an important task in social network analysis (SNA). It can help users identify friends and improve their level of activity. Most previous approaches predict users' friendship based on their historical records, such as their existing friendship, social interactions, etc. However, in reality, most users have limited friends in a single network, and the data can be very sparse. The sparsity problem causes existing methods to overfit the rare observations and suffer from

... ious performance degradation. This is particularly true when a new social network just starts to form. We observe that many of today's social networks are composite in nature, where people are often engaged in multiple networks. In addition, users' friendships are always correlated, for example, they are both friends on Facebook and Google+. Thus, by considering those overlapping users as the bridge, the friendship knowledge in other networks can help predict their friendships in the current network. This can be achieved by exploiting the knowledge in different networks in a collective manner. However, as each individual network has its own properties that can be incompatible and inconsistent with other networks, the naive merging of all networks into a single one may not work well. The proposed solution is to extract the common behaviors between different networks via a hierarchical Bayesian model. It captures the common knowledge across networks, while avoiding negative impacts due to network differences. Empirical studies demonstrate that the proposed approach improves the mean average precision of friendship prediction over state-of-the-art baselines on nine real-world social networking datasets significantly.
Information Metamaterial Systems

iScience
Metamaterials have great capabilities and flexibilities in controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves because their subwavelength meta-atoms can be designed and tailored in desired ways. However, once the structure-only metamaterials (i.e., passive metamaterials) are fabricated, their functions will be fixed. To control the EM waves dynamically, active devices are integrated into the meta-atoms, yielding active metamaterials. Traditionally, the active metamaterials include tunable metamaterials and

... reconfigurable metamaterials, which have either small-range tunability or a few numbers of reconfigurability. Recently, a special kind of active metamaterials, digital coding and programmable metamaterials, have been presented, which can realize a large number of distinct functionalities and switch them in real time with the aid of field programmable gate array (FPGA). More importantly, the digital coding representations of metamaterials make it possible to bridge the digital world and physical world using the metamaterial platform and make the metamaterials process digital information directly, resulting in information metamaterials. In this review article, we firstly introduce the evolution of metamaterials and then present the concepts and basic principles of digital coding metamaterials and information metamaterials. With more details, we discuss a series of information metamaterial systems, including the programmable metamaterial systems, software metamaterial systems, intelligent metamaterial systems, and space-time-coding metamaterial systems. Finally, we introduce the current progress and predict the future trends of information metamaterials.
N-continuous OFDM: System Optimization and Performance Analysis

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) is a promising technique to achieve significant sidelobe suppression of baseband OFDM signals. However, the high complexity limits its application. Based on conventional NC-OFDM, in this paper, a new technique, called time-domain N-continuous OFDM (TD-NC-OFDM), is proposed to transfer the original frequency-domain processing to the time domain, by the linear combination of a novel basis set to smooth the consecutive OFDM symbols

... nd their high-order derivatives. We prove that TD-NC-OFDM is an equivalent to conventional one while consuming much lower complexity. Furthermore, via the time-domain structure, a closed-form spectral expression of NC-OFDM signals is derived and a compact upper bound of sidelobe decaying is derived. This paper also investigates the impact of the TD-NC-OFDM technique on received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and provides a closed-form analytical expression. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that TD-NC-OFDM can prohibitively suppress the sidelobe with much lower complexity.
Improved N-continuous OFDM for 5G Wireless Communications

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) is a promising technique to obtain significant sidelobe suppression for baseband OFDM signals, in future 5G wireless communications. However, the precoder of NC-OFDM usually causes severe interference and high complexity. To reduce the interference and complexity, this paper proposes an improved time-domain N-continuous OFDM (TD-NC-OFDM) by shortening the smooth signal, which is linearly combined by rectangularly pulsed OFDM

... signals truncated by a smooth window. Furthermore, we obtain an asymptotic spectrum analysis of the TD-NC-OFDM signals by a closed-form expression, calculate its low complexity in OFDM transceiver, and derive a closed-form expression of the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Simulation results show that the proposed low-interference TD-NC-OFDM can achieve similar suppression performance but introduce negligible bit error rate (BER) degradation and much lower computational complexity, compared to conventional NC-OFDM.
Fast Coherent Point Drift
[article]

Nonrigid point set registration is widely applied in the tasks of computer vision and pattern recognition. Coherent point drift (CPD) is a classical method for nonrigid point set registration. However, to solve spatial transformation functions, CPD has to compute inversion of a M*M matrix per iteration with time complexity O(M3). By introducing a simple corresponding constraint, we develop a fast implementation of CPD. The most advantage of our method is to avoid matrix-inverse operation.

... the iteration begins, our method requires to take eigenvalue decomposition of a M*M matrix once. After iteration begins, our method only needs to update a diagonal matrix with linear computational complexity, and perform matrix multiplication operation with time complexity approximately O(M2) in each iteration. Besides, our method can be further accelerated by the low-rank matrix approximation. Experimental results in 3D point cloud data show that our method can significantly reduce computation burden of the registration process, and keep comparable performance with CPD on accuracy.

Entropy-based Optimization via A* Algorithm for Parking Space Recommendation
[article]
2021
arXiv
pre-print
This paper addresses the path planning problems for recommending parking spaces, given the difficulties of identifying the most optimal route to vacant parking spaces and the shortest time to leave the parking space. Our optimization approach is based on the entropy method and realized by the A* algorithm. Experiments have shown that the combination of A* and the entropy value induces the optimal parking solution with the shortest route while being robust to environmental factors.
