Baihui (DU20)-penetrating-Qubin (GB7) acupuncture inhibits apoptosis in the perihemorrhagic penumbra

Baihui (DU20)-penetrating-Qubin (GB7) acupuncture can inhibit inflammatory reactions and activate signaling pathways related to proliferation after intracerebral hemorrhage. However, there is no research showing the relationship between this treatment and cell apoptosis. Rat models of intracerebral hemorrhage were established by injecting 60 μL of autologous blood into the right side of the caudate-putamen. Six hours later, the needle traveled subcutaneously from the Baihui acupoint to Qubin
more &raquo; ... point. The needle was alternately rotated (180 ± 10 turns/min) manually along clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. Stimulation lasted for 7 days, and was performed three times each for 6 minutes with 6-minute intervals between stimulations. Rats intraperitoneally receiving Sonic hedgehog pathway activator, purmorphamine (1 mg/kg per day), served as positive controls. Motor and sensory function were assessed using the Ludmila Belayev test. Extent of pathological changes were measured in the perihemorrhagic penumbra using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Apoptosis was examined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay. Expression of smoothened (Smo) and glioma-associated homolog 1 (Gli1) was determined by western blot assay. Our results showed that Baihui-penetrating-Qubin acupuncture promoted recovery of motor and sensory function, reduced the apoptotic cell percentage in the perihemorrhagic penumbra, and up-regulated Smo and Gli1 expression. We conclude that Baihui-penetrating-Qubin acupuncture can mitigate hemorrhage and promote functional recovery of the brain in a rat model of intracerebral hemorrhage, possibly by activating the Sonic hedgehog pathway.

Grafting of Amines on Ethanol-Extracted SBA-15 for CO2 Adsorption

SBA-15 prepared via ethanol extraction for template removing was grafted with three kinds of amine precursors (mono-, di-, tri-aminosilanes) to synthesis new CO 2 adsorbents. The SBA-15 support and the obtained adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), N 2 adsorption/desorption, thermogravimetry (TG), elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy

It was found that, except higher silanol density, the ethanol-extracted SBA-15 support possessed a more regular mesophase and thicker walls than traditionally calcined samples, leading to a good stability of the adsorbent under steam treatment. The adsorption capacity of different amine-grafted samples was found to be influenced by not only the surface amine density, but also their physiochemical properties. These observations provide important support for further studies of applying amine-grafted adsorbents in practical CO 2 capture process.

Learning articulated object pose is inherently difficult because the pose is high dimensional but has many structural constraints. Most existing work do not model such constraints and does not guarantee the geometric validity of their pose estimation, therefore requiring a post-processing to recover the correct geometry if desired, which is cumbersome and sub-optimal. In this work, we propose to directly embed a kinematic object model into the deep neutral network learning for general
more &raquo; ... d object pose estimation. The kinematic function is defined on the appropriately parameterized object motion variables. It is differentiable and can be used in the gradient descent based optimization in network training. The prior knowledge on the object geometric model is fully exploited and the structure is guaranteed to be valid. We show convincing experiment results on a toy example and the 3D human pose estimation problem. For the latter we achieve state-of-the-art result on Human3.6M dataset.

Spherical potassium intercalated activated carbon beads for pulverised fuel CO2 post-combustion capture

Spherical carbon beads with a uniform diameter of ca. 0.6-0.8 mm and high mechanical strength can be prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. To optimise the performance of these adsorbents for pulverised fuel post-combustion capture, the efficacy of potassium intercalation via a KOH treatment has been investigated, deliberately using nitrogen-free phenolic resin derived activated carbon (AC) beads so that the enhanced CO 2 adsorption achieved by potassium intercalation could be delineated from any
more &raquo; ... ther effects. At 25°C and CO 2 partial pressure of 0.15 bar, the adsorption capacity of K-intercalated ACs nearly doubled from 0.79 mmol/g for the untreated carbons to 1.51 mmol/g whilst the effect on the morphology and mechanical strength is relatively small. It was found that only slightly more than ca. 1 wt.% of K is required to give the maximum benefit from intercalation that increases the surface polarity and the affinity towards CO 2 . The notably increased CO 2 uptake of the K-AC beads as a result of modest increase in adsorption heat (32-40 kJ/mol compared to 27 kJ/mol for the original AC), coupled with the fast adsorption kinetics, suggest that the overall energy penalty is potentially superior to strongly basic polyethyleneimine and other amine-based solid adsorbent systems for carbon capture.

Unveiling the Effects of Interchain Hydrogen Bonds on Solution Gelation and Mechanical Properties of Diarylfluorene-Based Semiconductor Polymers

The intrinsically rigid and limited strain of most conjugated polymers has encouraged us to optimize the extensible properties of conjugated polymers. Herein, learning from the hydrogen bonds in glucose, which were facilitated to the toughness enhancement of cellulose, we introduced interchain hydrogen bonds to polydiarylfluorene by amide-containing side chains. Through tuning the copolymerization ratio, we systematically investigated their influence on the hierarchical condensed structures,
more &raquo; ... ology behavior, tensile performances, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers. Compared to the reference copolymers with a low ratio of amide units, copolymers with 30% and 40% amide units present a feature of the shear-thinning process that resembled the non-Newtonian fluid, which was enabled by the interchain dynamic hydrogen bonds. Besides, we developed a practical and universal method for measuring the intrinsic mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. We demonstrated the significant impact of hydrogen bonds in solution gelation, material crystallization, and thin film stretchability. Impressively, the breaking elongation for P4 was even up to ~30%, which confirmed the partially enhanced film ductility and toughness due to the increased amide groups. Furthermore, polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on these copolymers presented comparable performances and stable electroluminescence (EL). Thin films of these copolymers also exhibited random laser emission with the threshold as low as 0.52 μJ/cm2, suggesting the wide prospective application in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices.
