Towards multi-application public interactive displays

Public displays are becoming a common sight in the urban landscape and they are increasingly being equipped with interaction components such as touch screens. In addition, the Web and its set of enabling technologies are attractive for realizing applications for public displays. We argue that to develop multi-application public displays, then services generally need to be easy to develop, robust, and be easy to deploy and maintain. In this position paper we present a virtual machinebased Web
more » ... lication platform, for decentralized deployment of interactive services on heterogeneous public displays, which satisfies the aforementioned requirements. We also report on some usage experiences of utilizing the platform in a network of large public displays, which we have deployed in a mid-size city.

The ARM platform extends from the mobile phone area to development board computers and servers. It could be that in the future the importance of the ARM platform will increase for High Performance Computing/High Throughput Computing (HPC/HTC) if new more powerful (server) boards are released. In this work CVMFS and Singularity have been compiled and installed on an ARM cluster and the AArch64 CMSSW releases in CVMFS have been used. We report on our experiences with this ARM cluster for CMSSW jobs. Commodity hardware designed around the 64-bit architecture has been the basis of current virtualization trends with the advantage to emulate diverse environments for a wide range of computational scenarios. However, in parallel the mobile revolution have given a rise to ARM SoCs with primary focus on power efficiency. While still in the experimental phase, the power efficiency and 64-bit heterogeneous computing already point to an alternative option for traditional x86_64 CPUs servers for datacenters.

Resolutions, higher extensions and the relative Mal'tsev axiom

We study how the concept of higher-dimensional extension which comes from categorical Galois theory relates to simplicial resolutions. For instance, an augmented simplicial object is a resolution if and only if its truncation in every dimension gives a higher extension, in which sense resolutions are infinite-dimensional extensions or higher extensions are finite-dimensional resolutions. We also relate certain stability conditions of extensions to the Kan property for simplicial objects. This
more » ... ves a new proof of the fact that a regular category is Mal'tsev if and only if every simplicial object is Kan, using a relative setting of extensions.

Relative commutator theory in semi-abelian categories

Basing ourselves on the concept of double central extension from categorical Galois theory, we study a notion of commutator which is defined relative to a Birkhoff subcategory B of a semi-abelian category A. This commutator characterises Janelidze and Kelly's B-central extensions; when the subcategory B is determined by the abelian objects in A, it coincides with Huq's commutator; and when the category A is a variety of omega-groups, it coincides with the relative commutator introduced by the first author.

In this paper we present a web-based framework for spatiotemporal screen real estate management of interactive public displays. The framework facilitates dynamic partitioning of the screen real estate into virtual screens assigned for multiple concurrent web applications. The framework is utilized in the implementation of so-called UBI-hotspot, which provides various information services via different interaction modalities including mobile. The framework facilitates seamless integration of
more » ... d party web applications residing anywhere in the public Internet into the UBI-hotspot, thus catering for a scalable and open architecture. We report the deployment of a network of indoor and outdoor UBI-hotspots at downtown Oulu, Finland. The quantitative data on the usage of the UBI-hotspots implicitly speaks in favor of the practical applicability of the framework.

Optical metasurfaces have emerged as a new generation of building blocks for multi-functional optics. Design and realization of metasurface elements place ever-increasing demands on accurate assessment of phase alterations introduced by complex nanoantenna arrays, a process referred to as quantitative phase imaging. Despite considerable effort, the widefield (non-scanning) phase imaging that would approach resolution limits of optical microscopy and indicate the response of a single nanoantenna
more » ... still remains a challenge. Here, we report on a new strategy in incoherent holographic imaging of metasurfaces, in which unprecedented spatial resolution and light sensitivity are achieved by taking full advantage of the polarization selective control of light through the geometric (Pancharatnam-Berry) phase. The measurement is carried out in an inherently stable common-path setup composed of a standard optical microscope and an add-on imaging module. Phase information is acquired from the mutual coherence function attainable in records created in broadband spatially incoherent light by the self-interference of scattered and leakage light coming from the metasurface. In calibration measurements, the phase was mapped with the precision and spatial background noise better than 0.01 rad and 0.05 rad, respectively. The imaging excels at the high spatial resolution that was demonstrated experimentally by the precise amplitude and phase restoration of vortex metalenses and a metasurface grating with 833 lines/mm. Thanks to superior light sensitivity of the method, we demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, the widefield measurement of the phase altered by a single nanoantenna, while maintaining the precision well below 0.15 rad.
