We present a new approach of explaining partial causality in multivariate fMRI time series by a state space model. A given single time series can be divided into two noise-driven processes, which comprising a homogeneous process shared among multivariate time series and a particular process refining the homogeneous process. Causality map is drawn using Akaike noise contribution ratio theory, by assuming that noises are independent. The method is illustrated by an application to fMRI data recorded under visual stimulus.doi:10.1007/s00422-007-0165-1 pmid:17579884 fatcat:546hdwkeqndpbhwmrrtcjnpg2e

Antiserum directed to the amphibian bombesin was raised in a guinea pig using the conjugate of N"-glycyl-[1-Glutamine]-bombesin with bovine serum albumin. The major immunologic determinant of this antiserum GP-3303 was shown to reside in the 6-7 sequence of bombesin. Bombesin-like immunoreactivities in gastrointestinal tissue extracts of the pig, dog, monkey, rat and guinea pig were found to be extremely low when measured by the present radioimmunoassay system using antiserum GP-3303. The very low concentrations of bombesin-like immunoreactivity in the mammalian tissue extracts examined in the present study seem to reflect, at least in part, this amino acid substitution in the position corresponding to position 7 of bombesin, since the amino acid is involved in the major immunologic determinant of antiserum GP-3303. The present result also suggests that the bombesin-like immunoreactivity detected in mammalian tissues may be due to a new group of peptides in which the porcine gastrin releasing peptide is included. We propose a new detection method based on cataluminescence (CTL) to detect isoflurane vapor, a typical anesthetic agent, continuously. The CTL of isoflurane vapor is observed during catalytic oxidation of isoflurane by the catalyst of -Al 2 O 3 activated with Tb 3+. This is the first observation of the CTL of the isoflurane vapor. The reproducible CTL response is observed at 600°C of catalyst temperature. The CTL intensity of isoflurane is proportional to the square root of the flow velocitydoi:10.1016/j.proeng.2011.12.269 fatcat:a6rauexjazb7rk5o6hg34ozayu

We investigated the lipid lowering and anti-atherosclerotic effects of atorvastatin in patients with hypercholesterolemia. Thirty patients were given atorvastatin 10 mg daily, and assessed for serum lipids, intima-media thickness (IMT), and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV) at the baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Remnant-like particle-cholesterol (RLP-C), lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured in some patients at the baseline and at 6doi:10.5551/jat.13.216 pmid:16908955 fatcat:ym56pxe5c5enxj7wl4tuqnftni

Total cholesterol, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly decreased by 32%, 23% and 44% at 6 months, respectively, and these effects were sustained at 12 months. There was no change in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. IMT at the baseline was 0.88 0.16 mm and decreased to 0.76 0.13 mm at 6 months, remaining at 0.75 0.12 mm at 12 months. We did not observe any significant changes in ba-PWV. RLP-C and hs-CRP were significantly reduced from 7.3 10.8 mg/dL to 4.3 5.3 mg/dL and 0.075 0.065 mg/dL to 0.039 0.043 mg/dL at 6 months, respectively. There was no change in Lp(a). The observed decrease in IMT suggests that atorvastatin possibly improves atherosclerosis, in addition to the significant reduction of serum lipids. J Atheroscler Thromb, 2006; 13:216-219.

The problem of estimating unobserved states of spatially extended dynamical systems poses an inverse problem, which can be solved approximately by a recently developed variant of Kalman filtering; in order to provide the model of the dynamics with more flexibility with respect to space and time, we suggest to combine the concept of GARCH modelling of covariance, well known in econometrics, with Kalman filtering. We reported three cases of Graves' disease which showed unusual histological findings featuring solid follicles, multinucleated giant cells and diffuse infiltration of histiocytes as well as lymphocytes in the whole section of the resected thyroid. Characteristics of these three cases were as follows: (1) Clinically, longer duration of the disease and exophthalmos were their prevailing findings. (2) On laboratory data, antimicrosomal antibody showed extremely high titers with 100,000 todoi:10.1507/endocrine1927.65.10_1186 pmid:2591606 fatcat:zklellm2sba5xgz7vxswrakzpi
