Towards Model Round-Trip Engineering: An Abductive Approach [chapter]

2009 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
Providing support for reversible transformations as a basis for round-trip engineering is a significant challenge in model transformation research. While there are a number of current approaches, they require the underlying transformation to exhibit an injective behaviour when reversing changes. This however, does not serve all practical transformations well. In this paper, we present a novel approach to round-trip engineering that does not place restrictions on the nature of the underlying

Model Synchronisation: Definitions for Round-Trip Engineering [chapter]

Thomas Hettel, Michael Lawley, Kerry Raymond
Lecture Notes in Computer Science
In a model-centric software development environment, a multitude of different models are used to describe a software system on different abstraction layers and from different perspectives. Following the MDA vision, model transformation is used to support the gradual refinement from abstract models into more concrete models. However, target models do not stay untouched but may be changed due to maintenance work or evolution of the software. Therefore, in order to preserve a coherent description

However, as transformations in general are partial and not injective, they cannot be easily reversed to propagate changes. This paper presents a formal definition of round-trip engineering and the semantics of target changes in the context of partial and non-injective transformations.

OCL Support in an Industrial Environment [chapter]

Michael Altenhofen, Thomas Hettel, Stefan Kusterer
Models in Software Engineering
In this paper, we report on our experiences integrating OCL evaluation support in an industrial-strength (meta-)modeling infrastructure. We focus on the approach taken to improve efficiency through what we call impact analysis of model changes to decrease the number of necessary (re-)evaluations. We show how requirements derived from application scenarios have led to design decisions that depart from or resp. extend solutions found in (academic) literature. Semantics of Standard Process Models with OR-Joins [chapter]

On the Move to Meaningful Internet Systems 2007: CoopIS, DOA, ODBASE, GADA, and IS
The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is an emerging standard for capturing business processes. Like its predecessors, BPMN lacks a formal semantics and many of its features are subject to interpretation. One construct of BPMN that has an ambiguous semantics is the OR-join. Several formal semantics of this construct have been proposed for similar languages such as EPCs and YAWL. However, these existing semantics are computationally expensive. This paper formulates a semantics of the

This complexity can be reduced down to linear-time after materializing a quadratic-sized data structure at design-time. The paper also shows how to efficiently detect the enablement of an OR-join incrementally as the execution of a process instance unfolds.

Study of Ultra-low Emittance Design for SPEAR3

Min-Huey Wang, Robert Hettel, Xiaobiao Huang, Thomas Rabedeau, James Safranek, Kai Tian, Petit-Jean-Genaz, Christine (Ed.), Arduini, Gianluigi (Ed.), Michel, Peter (Ed.), Schaa, Volker RW (Ed.)
Since its 2003 construction, the SPEAR3 synchrotron light source at SLAC has continuously improved its performance by raising beam current, top-off injection, small alpha and smaller emittance. This makes SPEAR3 one of the most productive light sources in the world. Now to further enhance the operation of SPEAR3, we are looking into the possibility of converting SPEAR3 to a multi-bend achromat storage ring within its site constraint.
