On the implementation of construction functions for non-free concrete data types [article]

Many algorithms use concrete data types with some additional invariants. The set of values satisfying the invariants is often a set of representatives for the equivalence classes of some equational theory. For instance, a sorted list is a particular representative wrt commutativity. Theories like associativity, neutral element, idempotence, etc. are also very common. Now, when one wants to combine various invariants, it may be difficult to find the suitable representatives and to efficiently
more » ... lement the invariants. The preservation of invariants throughout the whole program is even more difficult and error prone. Classically, the programmer solves this problem using a combination of two techniques: the definition of appropriate construction functions for the representatives and the consistent usage of these functions ensured via compiler verifications. The common way of ensuring consistency is to use an abstract data type for the representatives; unfortunately, pattern matching on representatives is lost. A more appealing alternative is to define a concrete data type with private constructors so that both compiler verification and pattern matching on representatives are granted. In this paper, we detail the notion of private data type and study the existence of construction functions. We also describe a prototype, called Moca, that addresses the entire problem of...

Higher Order Unification via Explicit Substitutions

Gilles Dowek, Thérèse Hardin, Claude Kirchner
2000 Information and Computation
Higher order uni cation is equational uni cation for -conversion. But it is not rst order equational uni cation, as substitution has to avoid capture. Thus the methods for equational uni cation (such as narrowing) built upon grafting (i.e. substitution without renaming), cannot be used for higher order uni cation, which needs speci c algorithms. Our goal in this paper is to reduce higher order uni cation to rst order equational uni cation in a suitable theory. This is achieved by replacing
more » ... itutionby grafting, but this replacementis not straightforward as it raises two major problems. First, some uni cation problems have solutions with grafting but no solution with substitution. Then equational uni cation algorithms rest upon the fact that grafting and reduction commute. But grafting and -reduction do not commute in -calculus and reducing an equation may change the set of its solutions. This di culty comes from the interaction between the substitutions initiated by -reduction and the ones initiated by the uni cation process. Two kinds of variables are involved: those of -conversion and those of uni cation. So, we need to set up a calculus which distinguishes these two kinds of variables and such that reduction and grafting commute. For this purpose, the application of a substitution of a reduction variable to a uni cation one must be delayed until this variable is instantiated. Such a separation and delay are provided by a calculus of explicit substitutions. Uni cation in such a calculus can be performed by well-known algorithms such as narrowing, but we present a specialised algorithm for greater e ciency. At last we show how to relate uni cation in -calculus and in a calculus with explicit substitutions. Thus we come up with a new higher order uni cation algorithm which eliminates some burdens of the previous algorithms, in particular the functional handling of scopes. Huet's algorithm can be seen as a speci c strategy for our algorithm, since each of its steps can be decomposed into elementary ones, leading to a more atomic description of the uni cation process. Also, solved forms in -calculus can easily be computed from solved forms in -calculus.

Safety and security are claimed major concerns by the formal FoCaL development environment. In [7] we introduced a safety development cycle customised to FoCaL. In this paper, we examine how to specify and implement a concrete example following this cycle. We show that indeed it is feasible and we present how FoCaL features fit with software best practises like modularity, reuse, fault confinement and maintenance.

Curien (1985) defines a translation of the Ac-calculus in the Pure Combinatory Categorical Logic and establishes an equivalence theorem between these two theories. The rewriting system SUBST simulates in particular the substitution of the Xe-calculus. This system is locally confluent. We shall show here that it is also noetherian.

A Few Remarks about Formal Development of Secure Systems

2008 2008 11th IEEE High Assurance Systems Engineering Symposium
Formal methods provide remarkable tools allowing for high levels of confidence in the correctness of developments. Their use is therefore encouraged, when not required, for the development of systems in which safety or security is mandatory. But effectively specifying a secure system or deriving a secure implementation can be tricky. We propose a review of some classical 'gotchas' and other possible sources of concerns with the objective to improve the confidence in formal developments, or at least to better assess the actual confidence level.
