Using elementary cellular automata (CA) as an example, we show how to coarse-grain CA in all classes of Wolfram's classification.  ...  At least one of the CA that can be coarse-grained is irreducible and known to be a universal Turing machine.  ...  In summary, we have found that many CA, including CIR ones can be locally coarse grained in space and time. In some cases CIR systems are predictable, if coarsegrained information only is required.  ...
