We consider the problem of pattern detection in large scale railway timetables. This problem arises in rolling stock optimization planning in order to identify invariant sections of the timetable for which a cyclic rotation plan is adequate. We propose a dual reduction technique which leads to an decomposition and enumeration method. Computational results for real world instances demonstrate that the method is able to produce optimal solutions as fast as standard MIP solvers.

Rolling stock optimization is a task that naturally arises by operating a railway system. It could be seen with different level of details. From a strategic perspective to have a rough plan which types of fleets to be bought to a more operational perspective to decide which coaches have to be maintained first. This paper presents a new approach to deal with rolling stock optimisation in case of a (long term) strike. Instead of constructing a completely new timetable for the strike period, we
more » ... pose a mixed integer programming model that is able to choose appropriate trips from a given timetable to construct efficient tours of railway vehicles covering an optimized subset of trips, in terms of deadhead kilometers and importance of the trips. The decision which trip is preferred over the other is made by a simple evaluation method that is deduced from the network and trip defining data.

Sera from a group of 79 patients with pernicious anemia were studied for the presence of antibody to intrinsic factor. Two general types of antibody activity were found, and it was possible to distinguish three groups of pernicious anemia sera on the basis of their content of these types. Type I antibody blocks the binding of radioactive vitamin B12 to intrinsic factor when added to intrinsic factor before the B12; it is not detected on intrinsic factor when added after B12. This antibody
more » ... intrinsic factormediated B12 absorption in vivo when mixed in the sequence intrinsic factor + antibody I + B12, but not when mixed in the sequence intrinsic factor + B,2 + antibody I. Type II antibody reacts with intrinsic factor when B12 is attached. This antibody prevents the absorption of B12 from intrinsic factor in pernicious anemia patients when mixed in the sequence intrinsic factor + B12 + antibody II, and is thereby distinguished from antibody I.

Eigensolutions of the Wigner-Eisenbud problem for a cylindrical nanowire within finite volume method [article]

Paul N. Racec, Stanley Schade, Hans-Christoph Kaiser, University, My, University, My
2019
We present a finite volume method for computing a representative range of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Schrödinger operator on a three dimensional cylindrically symmetric bounded domain with mixed boundary conditions. More specifically, we deal with a semiconductor nanowire which consists of a dominant host material and contains heterostructure features such as double-barriers or quantum dots. The three dimensional Schrödinger operator is reduced to a family of two dimensional
more » ... operators distinguished by a centrifugal potential. Ultimately, we numerically treat them by means of a finite volume method. We consider a uniform, boundary conforming Delaunay mesh, which additionally conforms to the material interfaces. The 1/r singularity is eliminated by approximating r at the vertexes of the Voronoi boxes. We study how the anisotropy of the effective mass tensor acts on the uniform approximation of the first K eigenvalues and eigenvectors and their sequential arrangement. There exists an optimal uniform Delaunay discretization with matching anisotropy. This anisotropic discretization yields best accuracy also in the presence of a mildly varying scattering potential, shown exemplarily for a nanowire resonant tunneling diode. For potentials with 1/r singularity one retrieves the theoretically established first order convergence, while the second order convergence is recovered only on uniform grids with an anisotropy correction.
