2018 arXiv   pre-print
The robust beamforming problem in multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink networks of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is studied in this paper. Adopting the time switching fashion to perform energy harvesting and information decoding respectively, we aim at maximizing the sum rate under imperfect channel state information (CSI) and the chance constraints of users' harvested energy. In view of the fact that the constraints for minimal harvested energy is not

Recognizing the maximum sum rate problem of imperfect CSI as nonconvex problem, we transform it into finding the expectation of minimum mean square error (MMSE) equivalently in this paper, and an alternative optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to decompose the optimization problem into two sub-problems: the transmit beamformer design and the division of switching time. The simulation results show the performance gains compared to non-robust state of the art schemes.

2011 Journal of Inorganic Materials
Based on the homogeneous coprecipitation synthesis of BaTiO 3 /BaFe 12 O 19 core/shell particles by using urea as precipitator, transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) were used to characterize the morphology, structure and composition of BaTiO 3 /BaFe 12 O 19 core/shell particles precursor and BaTiO 3 /BaFe 12 O 19 core/shell particles, respectively. Network vector analyzer was used to study the electromagnetic properties of the
more » ... O 3 /BaFe 12 O 19 core/shell particles in 2−7GHz. The results indicate that, BaTiO 3 / BaFe 12 O 19 particles exhibited core/shell structure. The BaFe 12 O 19 shell coated on the surface of BaTiO 3 is uniform, integrate and smooth. In 2−7 GHz, the real part (ε′) and the imaginary part (ε″) of permittivity of BaTiO 3 /BaFe 12 O 19 core/shell particles are in the range of 10.7−17.0 and 0.3−0.6, which are larger than that of BaTiO 3 . The increase of permittivity is a result of enhanced interfacial polarization caused by core/shell structure. BaTiO 3 /BaFe 12 O 19 core/shell particles exhibited magnetic properties which are not existent in BaTiO 3 . BaTiO 3 /BaFe 12 O 19 core/shell particles possess much larger real part (μ′) and imaginary part (μ″) of permeability than that of BaTiO 3 and shown obvious magnetic loss in 2−7 GHz, which is owed to the coating of magnetic BaFe 12 O 19 shell.

Orientation selectivity in cat primary visual cortex: local and global measurement

Tao Xu, Hong-Mei Yan, Xue-Mei Song, Ming Li
2015 Neuroscience Bulletin
In this study, we investigated orientation selectivity in cat primary visual cortex (V1) and its relationship with various parameters. We found a strong correlation between circular variance (CV) and orthogonal-topreferred response ratio (O/P ratio), and a moderate correlation between tuning width and O/P ratio. Moreover, the suppression far from the peak that accounted for the lower CV in cat V1 cells also contributed to the narrowing of the tuning width of cells. We also studied the

In conclusion, the CV (global measure) and tuning width (local measure) are signifi cantly correlated with the modulation ratio.

Curvature domains in V4 of Macaque Monkey [article]

2020 bioRxiv   pre-print
AbstractAn important aspect of visual object recognition is the ability to perceive object shape. How the brain encodes fundamental aspects of shape information remains poorly understood. Models of object shape representation describe a multi-stage process that includes encoding of contour orientation and curvature. While modules encoding contour orientation are well established (orientation domains in V1 and V2 visual cortical areas), whether there are modules for curvature is unknown. In this
more » ... study, we identify a module for curvature representation in area V4 of monkey visual cortex and illustrate a systematic representation of low to high curvature and of curvature orientation, indicative of curvature hypercolumns in V4. We suggest that identifying systematic modular organizations at each stage of the visual cortical hierarchy signifies the key computations performed.SignificanceWe use intrinsic signal optical imaging in area V4 of anesthetized macaque monkey to study the functional organization of curvature representation. We find a modular basis for cue-invariant curvature representation in area V4 of monkey visual cortex and illustrate a systematic representation from low to high curvature and of curvature orientation, replete with curvature pinwheels. This is the first report of systematic functional organization for curvature representation in the visual system. The use of optical imaging has revealed at a population level spatial details of cortical responses, something which has not been evident from previous studies of single neurons. These data support a representational architecture underlying a 'curvature hypercolumn' in V4.

Understanding the Under-Coverage Bias in Uncertainty Estimation [article]

Yu Bai, Song Mei, Huan Wang, Caiming Xiong
2021 arXiv   pre-print
Estimating the data uncertainty in regression tasks is often done by learning a quantile function or a prediction interval of the true label conditioned on the input. It is frequently observed that quantile regression – a vanilla algorithm for learning quantiles with asymptotic guarantees – tends to under-cover than the desired coverage level in reality. While various fixes have been proposed, a more fundamental understanding of why this under-coverage bias happens in the first place remains
more » ... sive. In this paper, we present a rigorous theoretical study on the coverage of uncertainty estimation algorithms in learning quantiles. We prove that quantile regression suffers from an inherent under-coverage bias, in a vanilla setting where we learn a realizable linear quantile function and there is more data than parameters. More quantitatively, for α>0.5 and small d/n, the α-quantile learned by quantile regression roughly achieves coverage α - (α-1/2)· d/n regardless of the noise distribution, where d is the input dimension and n is the number of training data. Our theory reveals that this under-coverage bias stems from a certain high-dimensional parameter estimation error that is not implied by existing theories on quantile regression. Experiments on simulated and real data verify our theory and further illustrate the effect of various factors such as sample size and model capacity on the under-coverage bias in more practical setups.
