Recurrent infectious subcapsular renal hematoma accompanied by microaneurysm

An 80-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital complaining of loss of appetite. 10 days earlier, her oral intake gradually decreased with no other specific symptoms, such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, or low back pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a left subcapsular renal hematoma. We suspected infective subcapsular renal hematoma, so percutaneous needle aspiration and drainage were performed. more » ... y 9 after admission, repeat CT scan revealed the subcapsular hematoma had reduced in size. The drain was removed, and intravenous antibiotics were discontinued. Follow-up CT scan on day 21 revealed increased subcapsular renal hematoma size. The patient also had high fever. Suspecting recurrence of infective subcapsular renal hematoma, we repeated the drainage of the hematoma and restarted intravenous antibiotics. Renal arteriography showed a renal artery microaneurysm and her condition improved with renal artery embolization. Renal arteriography was useful for detecting renal artery microaneurysm in infective subcapsular renal hematoma that did not resolve after antibiotic treatment and drainage.

Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (CPE), a causative agent of food poisoning, is a pore-forming toxin disrupting the selective permeability of the plasma membrane of target cells, resulting in cell death. We previously identified claudin as the cell surface receptor for CPE. Claudin, a component of tight junctions, is a tetra-transmembrane protein and constitutes a large family of more than 20 members, not all of which serve as the receptor for CPE. more » ... es the sensitive claudins is unknown. In this study, we localized the region of claudin responsible for interaction with CPE to the C-terminal part of the second extracellular loop, and found that the isoelectric point of this region in sensitive claudins was higher than insensitive claudins. Amino-acid substitutions to lower the pI resulted in reduced sensitivity to CPE among sensitive claudins, whereas substitutions to raise the pI endowed CPE-insensitive claudins with sensitivity. The steric structure of the claudin-binding domain of CPE reveals an acidic cleft surrounded by Tyr306, Tyr310, Tyr312, and Leu315, which were reported to be essential for interaction with the sensitive claudins. These results imply that an electrostatic attraction between the basic claudin region and the acidic CPE cleft is involved in their interaction.

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) was first reported from the United Kingdom (UK) in 1986. Approximately 190,000 BSE cases were reported in the world, about 185,000 cases were detected in UK so far. BSE were transferred among cattle by Meat and Bone Meal with an inadequate heat treatment produced from Specified Risk Materials (SRM) of BSE cattle. Infectious agent is a proteinaceous infectious particles (prion), these are causative agents of BSE and also of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
more » ... (vCJD) in human. 178 cases of vCJD cases were reported in the world since 1995. One case was also reported in Japan. 130 atypical BSE cases were reported in the world. Atypical BSE has a different western blot pattern from typical BSE. There are two patterns, High and Low types. Atypical BSE case was borne sporadically, and onset of BSE symptoms were detected older than typical BSE case. Two L type cases were detected in Japan in 16,100,000 cattle tested so far. To prevent dissemination of BSE in the world, feed ban which is not fed SRM to cattle was introduced. 65 BSE cases were borne after real feed ban in the world. Degradation of Imazosulfuron in Flooded Soils

Degradation of Imazosulfuron, 1-(2-chloroimidazo [1,2-a] pyridin-3-ylsulfonyl)-3-(4,6dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)urea, in the flooded soils was studied under laboratory conditions using the compounds labeled with 14C at imidazopyridine and pyrimidine rings. Imazosulfuron showed significant difference in degradation rates between aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and disappeared from the soils with half-lives of approximately 60 and 3 days, respectively. more » ... sulfonylurea bond and monodemethylation to give 2-amino-4, 6-dimethoxypyrimidine (ADPM), 2chloroimidazo [1,2-a] pyridine-3-sulfonamide (IPSN) and 1-(2-chloroimidazo [1, 2-a] pyridin-3ylsulfonyl)-3-(4-hydroxy-6-methoxypyrimidin-2-yl)urea (HMS) as the major degradation products. 14Ccarbon dioxide gradually increased with time accounting for 11. 0-48. 3% and 1. 6-4. 4% under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively, for the period of 360 days. In the sterilized soils under aerobic and anaerobic conditions 30 days after the treatment, the degradation rate of imazosulfuron and amounts of degradation products except for HMS were similar to those observed in nonsterilized soils under aerobic conditions 30 days after the treatment. Imazosulfuron in the soils under aerobic conditions gradually disappeared with time by the hydrolysis of the sulfonylurea bond to give ADPM and IPSN, and finally mineralized to carbon dioxide. On the other hand, Imazosulfuron under anaerobic conditions was degraded by soil microorganisms, followed by conversion to soil organic matters.

Lanthanide complexes exhibit interesting spectroscopic properties yielding many applications as imaging probes, natural chirality amplifiers, and therapeutic agents. However, many properties are not fully understood yet. Therefore, we applied magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy, which provides enhanced information about the underlying electronic structure to a series of lanthanide compounds. The metals in the M 3+ state included Y, La, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu; the spectra
more » ... ere collected for selected tetraphenylporphin (TPP) and octaethylporphin (OEP) complexes in chloroform. While the MCD and UV-VIS absorption spectra were dominated by the porphyrin signal, metal binding significantly modulated them. MCD spectroscopy was found to be better suited to discriminate between various species than absorption spectroscopy alone. The main features and trends in the lanthanide series observed in MCD and absorption spectra of the complexes could be interpreted at the Density Functional Theory (DFT) level, with effective core potentials on metal nuclei. The sum over state (SOS) method was used for simulation of the MCD intensities. The combination of the spectroscopy and quantum-chemical computations is important for understanding the interactions of the metals with the organic compounds.

Vibrational spectroscopies proved extremely useful to study a broad range of molecules, including their structures and interactions. Additional structural sensitivity is provided by polarized techniques measuring different absorption or scattering of left-and right circularly polarized light. The vibrational optical activity (VOA) methods include Raman optical activity (ROA) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). Interpretation of the spectra, however, is largely dependent on time-consuming
more » ... uantum-chemical simulations limited by molecular size. To be able to handle at a reasonable precision large molecules, such as biologically relevant systems, we developed a simplified method of transfer of vibrational atomic properties from smaller fragments to the system of interest. The method found many successful applications in the past, including spectra of proteins and nucleic acids, and appears useful also in connection with the multi-level computational techniques in the foreseeable future. In this chapter, we discuss the theoretical whereabouts of the transfer method and its related computational algorithms and describe typical applications to large molecules.
