Preliminary Investigation of the Diagnosis of Neonatal Congenital Small Bowel Atresia by Ultrasound

Purpose. To assess the diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) for congenital small bowel atresia (SBA) in neonates and their sonographic characteristics. Methods. A retrospective analysis was performed of 20 neonates who were confirmed with SBA by operation from March 2014 to January 2019. All the neonates have been scanned by US before surgery, and no one underwent barium enema or upper gastrointestinal imaging prior to US. more » ... nd intestinal contents were collected, further to summarize the typical ultrasonic features of SBA. Results. Five cases were duodenal atresia, and 15 cases were jejuno-ileal atresia. Distended proximal intestines, liquid with tiny points in it, can be found in 20 neonates. The small intestine without any gas can be found in 20 neonates. Microcolon, no gas and other contents in it, can be found in 16 cases. Conclusions. The typical ultrasonic features of SBA include dilation in proximal intestines, small intestines, and microcolon. US is a promising modality in the clinical diagnosis of SBA.

Weak measurement has been shown to play important roles in the investigation of both fundamental and practical problems. Anomalous weak values are generally believed to be observed only when post-selection is performed, i.e, only a particular subset of the data is considered. Here, we experimentally demonstrated an anomalous weak value can be obtained without discarding any data by performing a sequential weak measurement on a single-qubit system. Moreover, we find that the anomalous weak value can not be observed without post-selection when the sequential measurement is performed on each of the components of a two-qubit system, which confirms that the observed anomalous weak value is based on sequential weak measurement of two noncommutative operators.

Analyses involving possibility theory and possibility theory are illustrated with the same engineering example used in the presentation indicated above to illustrate the use of probability to represent aleatory and epistemic uncertainty in QMU analyses. The comparison between the uses of possibility theory and probability theory for the representation of aleatory and epistemic uncertainty indicates that the possibility is not only has a better mathematical structure than probability theory but also has some challenges.

AbstractInnate immunity relies on the formation of different inflammasomes to initiate immune responses. The recognition of diverse infection and other danger signals by innate immune receptors trigger caspase-1 activation that induces pyroptosis. Anthrax lethal factor (LF) is a secreted bacterial protease that known to potently activate Nlrp1b inflammasomes in mouse macrophages, but the molecular mechanism underlying LF-induced Nlrp1b activation remains unknown. more » ... genome-wide siRNA screen and a CRISPR/Cas9 knockout screen seeking to identify genes that participate in Nlrp1b activation triggered by LF treatment. We found that the N-end rule pathway E3 ligase UBR2 is required for Nlrp1b activation and a ubiquitin conjugating E2 enzyme E2O is also involved in this process via its physically interaction with UBR2. We show that LF triggers activation of Nlrp1b by initiating the degradation of the N-terminal fragment of Nlrp1b itself that produced via an auto-cleavage process. This study deepens our understanding of innate immunity defense against bacterial infection by elucidating the functional role of UBR2-mediated N-end rule pathway in LF-induced Nlrp1b activation.

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) Honey Extract

Safflower honey is a unique type of monofloral honey collected from the nectar of Carthamus tinctorius L. in the Apis mellifera colonies of northwestern China. Scant information is available regarding its chemical composition and biological activities. Here, for the first time, we investigated this honey's chemical composition and evaluated its in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. more » ... ty standards suggested that safflower honeys presented a good level of quality. The in vitro antioxidant tests showed that extract from Carthamus tinctorius L. honey (ECH) effectively scavenged DPPH and ABTS+ free radicals. In lipopolysaccharides (LPS) activated murine macrophages inflammatory model, ECH treatment to the cells inhibited the release of nitric oxide and down-regulated the expressions of inflammatory-relating genes (iNOS, IL-1β, TNF-α and MCP-1). The expressions of the antioxidant genes TXNRD, HO-1, and NQO-1, were significantly boosted in a concentration-dependent manner. ECH decreased the phosphorylation of IκBα and inhibited the nuclear entry of the NF-κB-p65 protein, in LPS-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells, accompany with the increased expressions of Nrf-2 and HO-1, suggesting that ECH achieved the anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NF-κB signal transduction and boosting the antioxidant system via activating Nrf-2/HO-1 signaling. These results, taken together, indicated that safflower honey has great potential into developing as a high-quality agriproduct.

Phenome-wide investigation of the causal associations between childhood BMI and adult outcomes: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study [article]

Compelling observational studies have reported that childhood obesity is associated with the risk of many complex diseases in adulthood. However, results from observational studies are unable to fully account for confounding factors. The causal effects of childhood obesity have not been systematically characterized. We aimed to assess the causal associations between childhood body mass index (BMI) and various adult traits/diseases using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods and
more » ... gs: Over 5,000 datasets for adult outcomes were obtained from various resources. After data filtering, 269 adult traits genetically correlated with childhood BMI (P < 0.05) were subjected to MR analyses. The number of independent outcomes was 148, setting the significant threshold as P < 3.38 x 10-4. Inverse-variance weighted method, MR-Egger, weighted median method, and weighted mode method were used to estimate the causal effects. We identified potential causal effects of childhood obesity on 60 adult traits (27 disease-related traits, 27 lifestyle factors, and 6 other traits). Higher childhood BMI was associated with a reduced overall health rating (β = −0.10, 95% CI: −0.13 to −0.07, P = 6.26 x 10-11). Findings on diseases included some novel effects, such as the adverse effects of higher childhood BMI on cholelithiasis (OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.18 to 1.35, P = 3.29 x 10-5). For dietary habits, we found that higher childhood BMI was positively associated adult diet portion size (β = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.34, P = 7.34 x 10-11). Different from the conventional impression, our results showed that higher childhood BMI was positively associated with low calorie density food intake. With 76 adult BMI single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instruments, we confirmed that adulthood BMI was positively associated with heel bone mineral density. However, the association no longer present after excluding the SNPs existing in or in linkage disequilibrium (LD) with childhood BMI. Network MR analyses suggested that past tobacco smoking and portion size mediated 6.39% and 10.90% of the associations between childhood BMI and type 2 diabetes, respectively. The main study limitation is that it is difficult to tease out the independent effects of childhood BMI due to the strong correlation between childhood and adulthood BMI. Conclusions: In summary, we provided a phenome-wide view of the effects of childhood BMI on adult traits. Our results highlight the need to intervene in childhood to reduce obesity from a young age and its later-life effects.

A Calculation Method for Vehicle Movement Reconstruction from Videos

This paper proposes a new enhanced method based on one-dimensional direct linear transformation for estimating vehicle movement states in video sequences. The proposed method utilizes a contoured structure of target vehicles, and the data collection procedure is found to be relatively stable and effective, providing a better applicability. The vehicle movement states in the verification phase are estimated using the proposed method first, and then the estimated states are compared with the actual movement states recorded in the experimental test. The results show that, in the case of camera perspective of 90 degrees, in all driving states of low speed, high speed, or deceleration, the error between estimated speed and recorded speed is less than 1.5%, the error of accelerations is less than 7%, and the error of distances is less than 2%; similarly, in the case of camera perspective of 30 degrees, the errors of speeds, distances, and accelerations are less than 4%, 5%, and 10%, respectively. It is found that the proposed method is superior to other existing methods.

Based on extensive evolutionary algorithm driven structural search, we propose a new diphosphorus trisulfide (P2S3) 2D crystal, which is dynamically, thermally and chemically stable as confirmed by the computed phonon spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. This 2D crystalline phase of P2S3 corresponds to the global minimum in the Born-Oppenheimer surface of the phosphorus sulfide monolayers with 2:3 stoichiometries. It is a wide band gap (4.55 eV) semiconductor with P-S σ bonds.

High-quality, all-inorganic CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 composite perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) were obtained with all-solution-processing at room temperature, and a photodetector (PD) with high detectivity was realized based on CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 NCs. The detectivity (D*) of the proposed PD is 4.24 × 1012 Jones under 532 nm illumination, which is among the highest levels for PDs based on all-inorganic perovskite NCs. In addition, a high linear dynamic range (LDR) of 115 dB under 1 V bias was also realized.

The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering, which is regarded as a category of quantum nonlocal correlations, owns the asymmetric property in contrast with the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. For the multipartite EPR steering, monogamy, which limits the two observers to steer the third one simultaneously, emerges as an essential property. Here, in an optical experiment, we provide a proof-of-principle demonstration of shareability of the EPR steering without constraint of monogamy in the three-qubit system, in which Alice could be steered by Bob and Charlie simultaneously. Moreover, based on the reduced bipartite EPR steering detection, we verify the genuine three-qubit entanglement. This work provides a basis for an improved understanding of the multipartite EPR steering and has potential applications in many quantum information protocols, such as multipartite entanglement detection and quantum cryptography.

Spindle cell melanoma: Incidence and survival, 1973‑2017

Spindle cell melanoma (SCM) is a rare morphological subtype of melanoma, which is relatively uncharacterized. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of SCM, its general demographics, basic clinico-pathologic features, treatment outcomes and disease-specific prognostic factors. SCM cases were sampled from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program (1973Program ( -2017)). A total of 4761 SCM cases were identified, with a median age of 66 years. The

Statistically significant overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) rate differences were identified depending on age, sex, ethnicity, tumor location, T stage, N stage, M stage, pathological grade, AJCC stage, SEER stages and surgical treatment (P<0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that age >66 years, T3+T4 stage disease, positive N stage and SEER historic stage of regional and distant metastasis tumor were associated with poor DSS and OS rates. In summary, SCM was most common in Caucasian people of 60~80 years of age with a predominance in males. Patient's age, ethnicity, T stage, N stage, and SEER historic stage were identified as independent prognostic factors of SCM in terms of DSS and OS.
