Unseen Visible Watermarking

2007 2007 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing
A novel data-hiding methodology, denoted as unseen visible watermarking (UVW), is proposed. The proposed scheme is inspired by real-world watermarks and possesses advantages of both visible and invisible watermarking schemes. After watermark embedding, the differences between the original work and the stego work are imperceptible under normal viewing conditions. However, when the hidden message is to be extracted, no explicit watermark extracting module is required. Semanticallymeaningful
more » ... ark patterns can be directly recognized from the stego work as long as common imaging-related functions, e.g. gamma-correction or even simply changing the user-viewing angle relative to the LCD monitor, are performed. The proposed scheme outperforms existing invisible watermarking methods in its capability to practically convey metadata to users of legacy display devices lacking renewal capability. On the other hand, it does not suffer from the annoying quality-degradation problem of visible watermarking schemes. Limitations and possible extensions of the proposed schemes are also addressed. We believe that many interesting new applications can be facilitated using such unseen visible watermarking schemes.

Long-term antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy is considered a risk factor of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, the duration of therapy contributes to acceleration of large-vessel atherosclerosis. Therefore, in this study, we tested the hypothesis that long-term AED therapy plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of microangiopathy in patients with epilepsy. Methods: We recruited 120 patients with epilepsy (age, 18-60 years) and 40 healthy controls. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to
more » ... e the central macular thickness and diameters of the retinal artery and vein to evaluate atherosclerotic retinopathy; microalbumin and creatinine levels in urine were assessed to evaluate atherosclerotic nephropathy. In addition, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), lipid profiles, homocysteine, folate, uric acid, and body mass index were determined. results: The ratio of urine albumin to creatine and OCT findings showed that patients with epilepsy had higher abnormal microalbuminuria and narrowing retinal vein diameters, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that increased triglyceride and hs-CRP levels might contribute to microalbuminuria. In addition, serum creatinine, duration of AED therapy, enzyme-inducing AED therapy, and duration of enzyme-inducing AED therapy were candidate risk factors for retinal vein narrowing. conclusion: Patients with epilepsy are at a higher risk for microangiopathy presented as retinopathy and nephropathy. Long-term AED therapy, particularly with enzyme-inducing AEDs; high triglyceride levels, and inflammatory processes play an important role in the development of microangiopathy in patients with epilepsy.

2006 2006 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo
By grouping the common prefix of a Huffman tree, in stead of the commonly used single-side rowing Huffman tree (SGHtree), we construct a memory efficient Huffman table on the basis of an arbitrary-side growing Huffman tree (AGH-tree) to speed up the Hufman decoding. Simulation results show that, in Huffman decoding, an AGH-tree based Huffman table is 2.35 times faster that of the Hashemian's method (an SGHtree based one) and needs only one-fifth the corresponding memory size. In summary, a
more » ... Huffman table construction scheme is proposed in this paper which provides better performance than existing construction schemes in both decoding speed and memory usage.

A novel information-hiding methodology denoted as digital invisible ink is introduced. The proposed approach is inspired by the invisible ink in the real world and can be regarded as an extension of the informed-embedding methodology. Messages hidden in digital contents using digital invisible ink cannot be correctly or clearly revealed unless certain pre-negotiated manipulations have been applied to the marked work. To facilitate such behavior, models and implementations based on both
more » ... ctrum and quantization-based watermarking approaches are investigated. Finally, benefits and limitations for applying digital invisible ink in common steganography systems and secret communications enabling plausible deniability are discussed.

Aims: chronic inflammation contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality of chronic hemodialysis patients. A recent research has shown that adipokines were associated with inflammation in these patients. We aim to investigate whether biomarkers of inflammation, adipokines, and clinical features can predict the outcome of hemodialysis patients.Materials and methods: we enrolled 181 hemodialysis patients (men: 97, mean age:56.3±13.6) and analyzed predictors of long-term
more » ... : during the 3-year followup period, 41 patients died; the main causes of death were infection and cardiovascular disease. Elevated serum levels of hsCRP and albumin and advanced age were highly associated with death (allP<.001). Leptin and adiponectin levels were not significantly different between deceased patients and survivors. Cox-regression analysis indicated that age, diabetes, albumin level, and hsCRP were independent factors predicting mortality. Conclusion: the presence of underlying disease, advanced age, and markers of chronic inflammation is strongly related to survival rate in long-term hemodialysis patients.

Effect of strain-temperature stress on MOS structure with ultra-thin gate oxide

A method called strain-temperature stress was adopted in this work to improve the quality of ultra-thin oxide on both MOS(p) and MOS(n) capacitors. MOS structures were baked at 100°C under externally applied mechanical stress. Reduced gate leakage current, reduced interface trap density (D it ), and improved time-dependent-dielectric-breakdown (TDDB) characteristics were observed after tensile-temperature stress treatment without increasing the oxide thickness. On the contrary,
more » ... rature stress resulted in a degraded performance of MOS capacitors. Consequently, the tensile-temperature stress method is suggested as a possible technique to enhance the ultra-thin oxide quality of MOS structure.

Mastitis in dairy cow significantly affects animal performance, ultimately reducing profitability. The reciprocal interrelationships among ruminal microbiota, metabolome, and mastitis combining early inflammatory factors (serum proinflammatory cytokines) in lactating dairy cows has not been explored, thus, this study evaluated these reciprocal interrelationships in early lactating Holstein dairy cows to identify potential microbial biomarkers and their relationship with ruminal metabolites. The
more » ... ruminal fluid was sampled from 8 healthy and 8 mastitis cows for the microbiota and metabolite analyses. The critical ruminal microbial biomarkers and metabolites related to somatic cell counts (SCC) and serum proinflammatory cytokines were identified by the linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) algorithm and Spearman's correlation analysis, respectively. The SCC level and proinflammatory cytokines positively correlated with Sharpea and negatively correlated with Ruminococcaceae UCG-014, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, and Treponema saccharophilum. Furthermore, the metabolites xanthurenic acid, and 1-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) ethan-1-ol positively correlated with microbial biomarkers of healthy cows, whereas, xanthine, pantothenic acid, and anacardic acid were negatively correlated with the microbial biomarkers of mastitis cows. In conclusion, Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Treponema saccharophilum are potential strains for improving the health of dairy cows. The current study provides a novel perspective to assist in targeting the ruminal microbiota with preventive/therapeutic strategies against inflammatory diseases in the future.

Nontuberculous bacterial spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a serious infectious disease of spines. Despite proper management, SEA remains a disease of high morbidity. The epidemiological data in southern Taiwan is still lacking. We analyzed the clinical features, laboratory data, magnetic resonance imaging findings, and therapeutic results of 45 bacterial SEA patients, collected during a study period of six years (2003- 2008). The 45 adult SEA patients, 32 were men and 13 women, aged 17-81 years
more » ... (mean = 62 years). Thoracic and lumbosacral spines were the most commonly affected segments. Staphylococcus aureus was the most commonly implicated pathogen, accounting for infections in 67% (29/43) of the culture-proven cases, and 41% (12/29) of the S. aureus strains were oxacillin resistant. Gram-negative pathogens were implicated in 30% (13/43) of the culture-proven cases. Of the 45 patients, 19 underwent antibiotic treatment alone and 26 underwent medical and surgical treatments. The therapeutic results showed that 28 patients had a good prognosis and 17 had a poor prognosis. The significant prognostic factors included higher age, presence of diabetes mellitus and chronic heart disease, and initial presentation of altered consciousness. S. aureus was the most commonly implicated pathogen of adult SEA, and most S. aureus strains were oxacillin resistant. A relatively high incidence of Gram-negative infection was observed in this study. The epidemiological characteristics of the implicated pathogens must receive special consideration when selecting the empirical antibiotics. Despite adequate management, many adults with bacterial SEA had a high incidence of poor prognosis.

A B S T R A C T Objectives: To assess whether the cutaneous features in patients with dengue fever are associated with abnormal blood biochemistry, complications, and poor disease outcome. Methods: Forty five patients with dengue fever were identified at a medical center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from September to November 2014. All cases were exclusively caused by type 1 dengue virus. Patients were classified into two groups, based on the presence or absence of skin rash, and their rash was
more » ... sified into maculopapular, morbilliform, and petechial types. Clinical symptoms, laboratory data, disease outcome, and complications were compared between the two groups. Results: Thirty two patients with dengue fever developed skin rash (SP group, n = 32) while the rest of 13 did not (SN group, n = 13). The patient numbers in the maculopapular, morbilliform, and petechial group were 4, 21, and 7, respectively. The SP group was younger (P = 0.001), experienced more pruritus (P = 0.008) and more swollen palms/soles (P = 0.015) than the SN group. However, the SN group had greater genital mucosa involvement (P = 0.008), higher platelet transfusion rate (P = 0.003), and lower hemoglobin and hematocrit levels (P = 0.030) than the SP group. Patients with morbilliform lesions had a higher incidence of palm/sole swelling, less genital mucosal involvement, and a lower platelet transfusion rate than did patients with maculopapular or petechial lesions. Conclusions: Cutaneous manifestations provide an important clue to dengue fever. In patients with dengue fever, those with skin rash tend to have itching and swelling of the palms/soles, however, those without skin rash tend to have more complications and poor disease outcomes.

A transfer printing technique allows the development of flexible photovoltaic devices. Blending poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) in the photoactive layer causes the PEG molecules to migrate spontaneously to and weaken the bonding at the interface between the polymer film and the Si wafer, thereby facilitating the transfer process from a hard stamp to the receiving flexible substrate. The device fabricated using this transfer printing process had characteristics similar to those of the corresponding
more » ... device prepared using a spin-coating process. Using hard stamps should help to realize the low-cost, high-throughput roll-to-roll fabrication of flexible solar cells.
