Sterilization and quality variation of dried red pepper by atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge plasma
2016
Korean Journal of Food Preservation
This study was conducted to explore the potential for use of atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge plasma (atmospheric pressure DBD plasma) as a non-thermal sterilization technology for microorganisms in dried red pepper. The effects of key parameters such as power, exposure time and distance on the sterilization efficiency and the quality of red dried pepper by the atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment were investigated. The results revealed that the plasma treatment was very

... fective for sterilization of Staphylococcus aureus, with 15 min of treatment at 1.0 kW and 20 mm sterilizing 82.6% of the S. aureus. Increasing the power or exposure time and decreasing the exposure distance led to improved sterilization efficiency. The atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment showed no effect on the ASTA (American spice trade association) value or hardness of dried red pepper. Furthermore, no effects of atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment were observed on the sensory properties of dried red pepper. To assess the storage stability, the dried red pepper was treated with atmospheric pressure DBD plasma (1.5 kW power, 15 min exposure time and 10 mm exposure distance), then stored for 12 weeks at 25℃. Consequently, the ASTA value, hardness and capsaicin concentration of dried red pepper were maintained.
Amplified Spontaneous Emission of GaN Nanorods
2012
Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society (Print)
Semiconductor nanowires have been the subject of intense study in recent years. In particular, their ability to confine electrons/holes and photons makes them attractive as potential building blocks of nanoscale electronics and optoelectronic devices. 1-3 For UV/blue light emitting devices, the optical properties of gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires are suitable due to their wide band gap (3.4 eV) and the absence of threading dislocation in the lateral dimensions. 4-7 Therefore, the optical

... ties of GaN nanostructures have been widely investigated, which include stimulated emission processes such as lasing and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). These can have a positive impact on the optoelectronic devices based on GaN nanowires. In this Note, we examine the stimulated emission process of GaN nanorods using optical excitation of femtosecond laser pulses. The shapes and lengths of the GaN nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), whose result is presented in Figure 1 (a). The diameters of nanorods were in the range of 150-400 nm and the lengths were 500-1000 nm. The as-grown nanorods were excited with a He-Cd laser (325 nm, Kimmon) to obtain a normal photoluminescence spectrum at room temperature ( Figure 1(b) ). In the UV region an emission peak was observed at 368 nm (3.4 eV). As the exciton binding energy in GaN is in the range of 20-25 meV, 4,8 emission of the exciton state was not expected due to the thermal energy at room temperature (26 meV). Therefore, the UV emission is attributed to band edge emission (BGE), which indicates the band gap energy. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] To measure the nonlinear optical response, GaN nanorods were excited by the second harmonics (355 nm) of a cavitydumped oscillator (Mira/PulseSwitch, Coherent, 1 MHz, 710 nm, 150 fs) using a UV microscope objective. 9,10 The emissions were collected by the same objective, resolved spectrally by a monochromator, and detected by a photomultiplier. The shape of BGE was not changed when a low excitation intensity was used (< 25 µJ/cm 2 ), as shown in Figure 2 (a). The intensity of BGE increased almost linearly in this low excitation intensity regime, which is presented in Figure 2(b) . On the other hand, a superlinear increase in the BGE intensity was observed at an excitation intensity of 30 µJ/cm 2 . In addition, the bandwidth of BGE decreased with increasing excitation intensity above a threshold of 30 µJ/ cm 2 . For example, the full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of the band was found to be 17 nm at an excitation intensity of 10 µJ/cm 2 , which decreased to 15 nm at an excitation intensity of 50 µJ/cm 2 , as seen in the inset of Figure 2 (a). The superlinear increase in the BGE intensity and the narrowing of the bandwidth can be attributed to the waveguiding effect. 4,5 As the diameter of the nanorods is smaller † This paper is to commemorate Professor Kook Joe Shin's honourable retirement. Figure 1. (a) Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of GaN nanostructures. Scale bar indicates 2 µm. (b) Photoluminescence spectrum of GaN nanorods at room temperature. The peak wavelength was observed at 368 nm, indicating the band gap energy.
Photofragmentation in selected tautomers of protonated adenine
2011
Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP
The photofragmentation by UV excitation of selectively prepared 1 + and 3 + tautomers of protonated adenine is studied after excitation at a 266 and 263 nm wavelengths with two different experimental set-ups located in Seoul and Orsay. While the production of 1 + tautomers with an electrospray ion source is now well accepted, calculations were used to ascribe the preparation of 3 + tautomers from cold adenine dimers. The fragmentation patterns are rather similar for both tautomers, suggesting

... ed 134 patients of >60 years who were undergoing TSH suppression therapy following surgery for DTC. We evaluated muscle mass and muscle function-related parameters and diagnosed sarcopenia using the threshold for Asian people.ResultsThe participants were 68.3 ± 7.2 years old and 36/134 (26.9%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. They were allocated to high-TSH and low-TSH groups using a threshold concentration of 0.40 μU/mL, and grip strength was significantly lower in the low-TSH group. The data were further analyzed according to age and sex, and in the low-TSH group, male participants and those of <70 years were found to have significantly lower grip strength.ConclusionsLow-TSH concentrations is associated with low grip strength, and this is most pronounced in individuals of <70 years of age. Therefore, muscle function should be considered an adverse effect of TSH suppression in patients with DTC who undergo TSH suppression therapy, especially in men of <70 years.
The LIM protein complex establishes a retinal circuitry of visual adaptation by regulating Pax6 α-enhancer activity
2017
eLife
The visual responses of vertebrates are sensitive to the overall composition of retinal interneurons including amacrine cells, which tune the activity of the retinal circuitry. The expression of Paired-homeobox 6 (PAX6) is regulated by multiple cis-DNA elements including the intronic α-enhancer, which is active in GABAergic amacrine cell subsets. Here, we report that the transforming growth factor ß1-induced transcript 1 protein (Tgfb1i1) interacts with the LIM domain transcription factors Lhx3

... and Isl1 to inhibit the α-enhancer in the post-natal mouse retina. Tgfb1i1-/- mice show elevated α-enhancer activity leading to overproduction of Pax6ΔPD isoform that supports the GABAergic amacrine cell fate maintenance. Consequently, the Tgfb1i1-/- mouse retinas show a sustained light response, which becomes more transient in mice with the auto-stimulation-defective Pax6ΔPBS/ΔPBS mutation. Together, we show the antagonistic regulation of the α-enhancer activity by Pax6 and the LIM protein complex is necessary for the establishment of an inner retinal circuitry, which controls visual adaptation.
Case of Renal Microaneurysms and Multiple Renal Infarctions in a Patient with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
2018
Journal of Rheumatic Diseases
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory, heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibody production and the potential involvement of almost every organ system. Although vasculitis usually confined to small vessels is a fairly common feature of SLE, ischemic vasculitis with an aneurysm is an uncommon feature. In particular, renal arterial microaneurysms and multiple renal infarctions are very rarely reported in patients with SLE. Furthermore, to the best of

... adical surgery. Results A total of 110 patients underwent primary surgery. At the time of surgery, tumors appeared to be grossly confined to the ovaries in 90 patients, and evidence of metastasis was definite in 20 patients. Of the 90 patients with tumors that appeared to be grossly confined to the ovaries at surgical exploration, 35 (38.9%) underwent fertility-sparing surgery. The Kaplan-Meier curve and the log rank test showed no difference in either recurrence-free survival (p=0.792) or disease-specific survival (p=0.706) between the two groups. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in recurrence-free survival (p=0.126) or disease-specific survival (p=0.377) between the two groups, even when the analysis was limited to women below the age of 40. In a multivariate Cox model, fertility-sparing surgery had no effect on either recurrence-free survival (recurrence hazard ratio [HR], 1.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.25 to 5.71) or disease-specific survival (death HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.17 to 4.60). Conclusion Fertility-sparing surgery in primary mucinous cancer grossly confined to the ovaries may be a safe option and one not associated with an increase in recurrence or mortality.
