Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. Periodontitis, as chronic inflammatory destructive disease, is associated metabolic syndomes bidirectionally. Toothbrushing is an essential and important way to manage periodontitis through mechanical removal of biofilm at periodontal tissue. We aimed to assess the association between toothbrushing frequency and the prevalent NAFLD in nationally representative Korean adults. Among adults
more » ... 19 years and older who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2010, a total of 6,352 subjects were analyzed. NAFLD was defined as fatty liver index ≥60. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to estimate multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). An inverse association between toothbrushing frequency and NAFLD was found. The adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of NALFD was 0.56 (0.35 - 0.90) in the group who performed toothbrushing ≥ 3 per day compared to the group that performed toothbrushing ≤ 1 per day. For those with toothbrushing frequency ≤1 per day, the adjusted OR (95% CIs) of NAFLD was 2.27 (1.22-4.23) in smokers and 4.55 (1.98 – 10.44) in subjects with diabetes mellitus (DM), compared to those without the disease and with toothbrushing frequency ≥2 per day, respectively. Our results indicate that higher frequency of toothbrushing is inversely associated with NAFLD. As a modifiable oral habit, regular toothbrushing may be recommended to lower risk of NAFLD, especially in high risk groups such as smokers and diabetic patients.

2013 Diabetes & Metabolism Journal
We investigated the relationship between endothelial dysfunction and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: We used a cross-sectional design to examine 167 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. All patients underwent biochemical and ophthalmological examination. We assessed endothelial dysfunction by a flow-mediated vasodilation method of the brachial artery. Changes in vasodilation (flow-mediated vasodilatation, %FMD) were expressed as percent change over
more » ... e values. Results: The mean±standard deviation of patient age was 54.1±8.6 years. The %FMD was significantly lower in patients with DR than without DR. The prevalence of retinopathy decreased across increasing tertiles of %FMD. After adjusting for patients' age, sex, diabetes duration, use of insulin, use of antihypertensive, antiplatelet, and lipid lowering medications, systolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, 2-hour plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and urinary albumin excretion, participants with a reduced %FMD were more likely to have DR (odds ratio, 11.819; 95% confidence interval, 2.201 to 63.461; P=0.004, comparing the lowest and highest tertiles of %FMD). Conclusion: Endothelial dysfunction was associated with DR, which was most apparent when the endothelial dysfunction was severe. Our study provides insights into the possible mechanism of the influence of endothelial dysfunction on the development of DR.

Recovery Profile after Inhalation Anesthesia Using Sevoflurane and Desflurane

Seung Hyun Moon, Sang Hyun Kwak, Myung Ha Yoon
2002 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology
Sevoflurane and Desflurane are new inhalation anesthetics with a low blood/gas solubility which should allow a fast induction and emergence from anesthesia. This study was designed to compare the induction and recovery characteristics of gynecologic surgical patients receiving sevoflurane, desflurane or isoflurane with nitrous oxide for the maintenance of general anesthesia. Methods: After a standardized induction of anesthesia with fentanyl, propofol, succinylcholine and tracheal intubation,
more » ... tients undergoing an elective gynecologic surgery lasting 1-2 hr randomly received sevoflurane (n = 23), desflurane (n = 21) or isoflurane group (n = 20). Induction, recovery time and the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and recall were compared among groups. The liver (SGOT, SGPT, ALP) and renal (BUN, serum creatinine) function were evaluated before and after the operation. Results: Although anesthetic conditions were similar during the operation in the three groups, significant differences were noted in induction and recovery profiles from anesthesia. Induction time was 201 ± 67 sec for sevoflurane, 124 ± 66 sec for desflurane and 422 ± 257 sec for isoflurane. The time required for the end-tidal concentration of anesthetics to decrease by 50% was 180.9 ± 34.4 sec for sevoflurane, 168.0 ± 160.1 sec for desflurane, and 222.9 ± 127.5 sec for isoflurane. The time to response (eye opening following a simple command), and orientation (recall of name and date of birth), to reach 10 points of the PAR (post anesthesia recovery) score and discharge from recovery room were significantly shorter after sevoflurane and desflurane than after isoflurane. There were no significant differences in liver and kidney functions between the periods before and after the operation among the groups. The frequency of side effects such as nausea, vomiting and recall during the postoperative period was similar among the groups. Conclusions: It is concluded that a balanced anesthetic technique using sevoflurane and desflurane as the main anesthetics has certain advantages compared with isoflurane in terms of faster emergence.

2011 Journal of Ginseng Research
In this study, we investigated the effects of total ginseng saponin (TGS) on the cutaneous wound healing process using histological analysis. A total of 24 ICR mice, 5-weeks-old, were used for all in vivo experiments. Mice were divided into control and TGS-treated groups and four equidistant 1-cm full-thickness dorsal incisional wounds were created. The wounds were extracted at days 1, 3, 5, and 7 post-injury for histomorphometrical analysis including wound area and contracture measurements,
more » ... atinocyte migration rate, and calculation of infiltrating inflammatory cells. The results showed that the wound area was smaller and keratinocyte migration rate was higher in the TGS-treated group than that of the control group from days 3 to 7. Inflammatory cells in the TGS-treated group at days 1 and 3 were reduced compared to the control group. Wound contraction in the TGS-treated group was greater than in the control group on days 3 to 5, and collagen deposition in the TGS-treated group was higher than in the control group during wound healing. The results indicate a beneficial effect of TGS when used to treat skin wounds.

Min-Ki Lee, Seung-Hyun Moon, Yourim Yoon, Yong-Hyuk Kim, Byung-Ro Moon
2018 Advances in Meteorology
Significant errors exist in automated meteorological data, and identifying them is very important. In this paper, we present a novel method for determining abnormal values in meteorological observations based on support vector regression (SVR). SVR is used to predict the observation value from a spatial perspective. The difference between the estimated value and the actual observed value determines if the observed value is abnormal or not. In addition, SVR input variables are deliberately
more » ... ed to improve SVR performance and shorten computing time. In the selection process, a multiobjective genetic algorithm is used to optimize the two objective functions. In experiments using real-world data sets collected from accredited agencies, the proposed estimation method using SVR reduced the RMSE by an average of 45.44% whilst maintaining competitive computing times compared to baseline estimators.

2019 Antibiotics
Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside-based natural antibiotic derived from Streptomyces tenebrarius, which is primarily used for Gram-negative bacterial infection treatment. Although tobramycin has been utilized in clinical practice for a long time, it has exhibited several side effects, leading to the introduction of more effective antibiotics. Therefore, we conducted our experiments focusing on new possibilities for the clinical use of tobramycin. How tobramycin affects skin melanin formation is
more » ... known. This study used B16F10 melanoma cells to assess the effect of tobramycin on melanin production. After cytotoxicity was assessed by MTT assay, melanin content and tyrosinase activity analyses revealed that tobramycin induces melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells. Next, Western blot analyses were performed to elucidate the mechanism by which tobramycin increases melanin production; phosphorylated p38 protein expression was upregulated. Protein inhibitors have been used to elucidate the mechanism of tobramycin. Kanamycin A and B are structurally similar to tobramycin, and 2-DOS represents the central structure of these antibiotics. The effects of these substances on melanogenesis were evaluated. Kanamycin A reduced melanin production, whereas kanamycin B and 2-DOS had no effect. Overall, our data indicated that tobramycin increases melanin production by promoting p38 protein phosphorylation in B16F10 melanoma cells.

2005 Journal of Organometallic Chemistry
Bis(alkyldihydroxysilyl)methanes 1 [R(HO) 2 SiCH 2 Si(OH) 2 R: R = methyl (a) and cyclopentyl (b)] were prepared in 65% and 86% yields by the hydrolysis of the corresponding bis(alkyldichlorosilyl)methanes using aniline as HCl scavenger in diethyl ether. They were isolated in pure forms, fully characterized, and studied on their thermal properties. In single crystal X-ray structures, the molecules of 1a and 1b crystallize in the tetragonal (a = b = 22.884 Å , c = 6.1485 Å ; a = b = c = 90°in a

In their solid state, the remarkable hydrogen bondings of compounds 1a and 1b lead to three dimensional network structure and one dimensional columnar tube, respectively. From the studies on their thermal analyses, both compounds 1a and 1b were stable below their melting points and then the losses of waters, which were formed by the self-condensation coincident with their melting, occurred.
