Evaluating forecasts is essential in order to understand and improve forecasting and make forecasts useful to decision-makers. Much theoretical work has been done on the development of proper scoring rules and other scoring metrics that can help evaluate forecasts. In practice, however, conducting a forecast evaluation and comparison of different forecasters remains challenging. In this paper we introduce scoringutils, an R package that aims to greatly facilitate this process. It is especially
more &raquo; ... eared towards comparing multiple forecasters, regardless of how forecasts were created, and visualising results. The package is able to handle missing forecasts and is the first R package to offer extensive support for forecasts represented through predictive quantiles, a format used by several collaborative ensemble forecasting efforts. The paper gives a short introduction to forecast evaluation, discusses the metrics implemented in scoringutils and gives guidance on when they are appropriate to use, and illustrates the application of the package using example data of forecasts for COVID-19 cases and deaths submitted to the European Forecast Hub between May and September 2021

The assessment of perceived quality based on psychophysiological methods recently gained attraction as it potentially overcomes certain flaws of psychophysical approaches. Although studies report promising results, it is not possible to arrive at decisive and comparable conclusions that recommend the use of one or another method for a specific application or research question. The video quality expert group started a project on psychophysiological quality assessment to study these novel

This test plan comprises of a specifically designed set of quality annotated video sequences, suggestions for psychophysiological methods to be studied in quality assessment, and recommendations for the documentation and publications of test results. Emails From the Boss—Curse or Blessing? Relations Between Communication Channels, Leader Evaluation, and Employees' Attitudes

The present research investigates if and how a more digitally centered communication between supervisors and employees satisfies employees' needs regarding the communication with their supervisors and influences employees' attitudes toward the supervisor and the job. In a cross-sectional online study, 261 employees rated their supervisors' actual and ideal use of different communication channels (i.e., telephone, face-to-face, email) regarding quality and quantity. Employees' job satisfaction
more &raquo; ... d their perceptions of their supervisors' effectiveness and team identification were measured as dependent variables. Employees perceived face-to-face communication to be of higher quality than telephone and email communication, and they indicated a preference for more face-to-face communication with their supervisors than they actually had. Moreover, the perceived quality of communication, especially via faceto-face, was strongly and positively related to the dependent variables. These results provide insights into potential problems of increasing e-leadership in organizations. We conclude with recommendations to reduce these problems.

Kalman Filter-based Head Motion Prediction for Cloud-based Mixed Reality [article]

Volumetric video allows viewers to experience highly-realistic 3D content with six degrees of freedom in mixed reality (MR) environments. Rendering complex volumetric videos can require a prohibitively high amount of computational power for mobile devices. A promising technique to reduce the computational burden on mobile devices is to perform the rendering at a cloud server. However, cloud-based rendering systems suffer from an increased interaction (motion-to-photon) latency that may cause

One way of reducing the effective latency is to predict the viewer's head pose and render the corresponding view from the volumetric video in advance. In this paper, we design a Kalman filter for head motion prediction in our cloud-based volumetric video streaming system. We analyze the performance of our approach using recorded head motion traces and compare its performance to an autoregression model for different prediction intervals (look-ahead times). Our results show that the Kalman filter can predict head orientations 0.5 degrees more accurately than the autoregression model for a look-ahead time of 60 ms.

Deep Dual Loss BRDF Parameter Estimation

Surface parameter estimation is an essential field in computer games and movies. An exact representation of a real-world surface allows for a higher degree of realism. Capturing or artistically creating these materials is a time-consuming process. We propose a method which utilizes an encoder-decoder Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to extract parameters for the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) automatically from a sparse sample set. This is done by implementing a
more &raquo; ... ntiable renderer, which allows for a loss backpropagation of rendered images. This photometric loss is essential because defining a numerical BRDF distance metric is difficult. A second loss is added, which compares the parameters maps directly. Therefore, the statistical properties of the BRDF model are learned, which reduces artifacts in the predicted parameters. This dual loss principal improves the result of the network significantly. Opposed to previous means this method retrieves information of the whole surface as spatially varying BRDF (SVBRDF) parameters with a sufficiently high resolution for intended real-world usage. The capture process for materials only requires five known light positions with a fixed camera position. This reduces the scanning time drastically, and a material sample can be obtained in seconds with an automated system.

Imaging axon regeneration within synthetic nerve conduits

While axons within the central nervous system (CNS) do not regenerate following injury, those in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) do, although not in a clinically satisfactory manner as only a small proportion of axons exhibit long-distance regeneration. Moreover, functional recovery is hampered by excessive axonal sprouting and aberrant reinnervation of target tissue. more &raquo; ... radigms of peripheral nerves in rat or mouse models, and reagents or cells have been administered to the lesion site through nerve conduits, aiming to improve early-stage regeneration. Morphological analysis of such in vivo experiments has however been limited by the incompatibility of synthetic nerve conduits with existing tissue-clearing and imaging techniques. We present herein a novel experimental approach that allows high-resolution imaging of individual axons within nerve conduits, together with quantitative assessment of fiber growth. We used a GFP-expressing mouse strain in a lesion model of the sciatic nerve to describe a strategy that combines nerve clearing, chemical treatment of chitosan nerve conduits, and long working distance confocal microscopy with image processing and analysis. This novel experimental setup provides a means of documenting axon growth within the actual conduit during the critical initial stage of regeneration. This will greatly facilitate the development and evaluation of treatment regimens to improve axonal regeneration following nerve damage.

Dickkopf-1 protein (Dkk1), a major inhibitor of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, is a secretory glycoprotein that has been found to be involved in the pathogenesis of several human diseases and to provide a promising diagnostic and therapeutic tool in diverse cancer entities. Endometriosis shares some characteristics with invasive tumors. The present study aimed to investigate whether Dkk1 expression is dysregulated in endometriosis. Methods: 188 subjects including 109 women with histologically
more &raquo; ... d endometriosis and 79 healthy women were recruited. Serum Dkk1 levels were measured by ELISA in 97 and 75 women with-and without endometriosis respectively. Gene expression levels of Dkk1-and β-catenin were assessed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in 28 different human tissue types, including 4 normal endometrium tissues, 8 normal peritoneal tissues, and 16 endometriosis tissues. Results: Endometriosis patient women showed significantly higher serum levels of Dkk1 compared with healthy women [2999 pg/ml (947-5104) vs 2216 pg/ml (1008-4109) respectively; p<0.0001]. No significant differences in Dkk1 gene expression levels were found between the different tissue types but it showed, within endometriosis tissue group, to be upregulated in cases with more severe disease. β-catenin gene expression was found to be down regulated in endometriosis tissues compared with normal endometrium tissues. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate serum levels of Dkk1 in patients with endometriosis. Our results demonstrated aberrant expression of two main components of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in endometriosis. Interventions in this signaling transduction pathway can contribute to development of new targets for disease control and therapy. Dkk1 could serve as diagnostic biomarker in endometriosis. However, further multicentre large-scaled studies are required.

Intraperitoneal ampicillin treatment for peritoneal dialysis- related peritonitis with Listeria monocytogenes - a case report

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis is a rare but serious complication and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. It is most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis, but infection with Listeria monocytogenes may also occur. Recommendations for antibiotic treatment of a Listeria infection are currently based on a small number of case reports and suggest the administration of ampicillin. But unlike vancomycin or gentamicin, for
more &raquo; ... n the route of application, the dosage, and the duration of treatment have not yet been established. We report a case in which PD-associated peritonitis due to Listeria infection was treated with ampicillin administered intravenously and intraperitoneally, separately and in combination. A 72-year-old man with chronic kidney disease stage 5 dialysis (CKDG5D) secondary to hypertension and diabetes was hospitalised in April 2020 because of PD-related peritonitis caused by a Listeria infection. In accordance with the results of resistance tests, the patient was treated with intravenous ampicillin at a dosage of 6 g twice daily. After initial treatment the leukocyte count in the PD effluent had decreased substantially, but it was permanently reduced only with the addition of intraperitoneal ampicillin (4 g daily). Efficient serum concentrations of ampicillin were determined for both routes of administration, intravenous and intraperitoneal. This is the first case report demonstrating that PD-related peritonitis due to Listeria monocytogenes infection can be treated with intraperitoneal ampicillin and monitored by the determination of peripheral serum concentrations of ampicillin.

Due to the higher requirements associated with Ultra High Definition (UHD) resolutions in terms of memory and transmission bandwidth, the feasibility of UHD video communication applications is strongly dependent on the performance of video compression solutions. Even though the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard allows significantly superior rate-distortion performances compared to previous video coding standards, further performance improvements are possible when exploiting the
more &raquo; ... tual properties of the Human Visual System (HVS). This paper proposes a novel perceptual-based solution fully compliant with the HEVC standard, where a low complexity Just Noticeable Distortion model is used to drive the encoder's rate-distortion optimised quantisation process. This technique allows a simple and effective way to influence the decisions made at the encoder, based on the limitations of the HVS. The experiments conducted for UHD resolutions show average bitrate savings of 21% with no visual quality degradations when compared to the HEVC reference software.

Experimental and simulation-based analysis of asymmetrical spherical roller bearings as main bearings for wind turbines

AbstractSymmetrical spherical roller bearings (SSRB) used as main bearings for wind turbines are known for their high load carrying capacity. Nevertheless, even designed after state-of-the-art guidelines premature failures of this bearing type occur. One promising solution to overcome this problem are asymmetrical spherical roller bearings (ASRB). Using ASRB the contact angles of the two bearing rows can be adjusted individually to the load situation occurring during operation. In this study
more &raquo; ... differences between symmetrical and asymmetrical spherical roller bearings are analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). Therefore, FEM models for a three point suspension system of a wind turbine including both bearings types are developed. These FEM models are validated with measurement data gained at a full-size wind turbine system test bench. Taking into account the design loads of the investigated wind turbine it is shown that the use of an ASRB leads to a more uniform load distribution on the individual bearing rows. Considering fatigue-induced damage an increase of the bearing life by 62% can be achieved. Regarding interactions with other components of the rotor suspension system it can be stated that the transfer of axial forces into the gearbox is decreased significantly.
