6 The paper studies the problem of actively learning from instances characterized by imprecise features or imprecise class labels, where by actively learning we understand the possibility to query the precise value of imprecisely specified data. We differ from classical active learning by the fact that in the later, data are either fully precise or completely missing, while in our case they can be partially specified. Such situations can appear when sensor errors are important to encode, or
more &raquo; ... experts have only specified a subset of possible labels when tagging data. We provide a general active learning technique that can be applied in principle to any model. It is inspired from racing algorithms, in which several models are competing against each others. The main idea of our method is to identify the query that will be the most helpful in identifying the winning model in the competition. After discussing and formalizing the general ideas of our approach, we illustrate it by studying the particular case of binary SVM in the case of interval valued features and set-valued labels. The experimental results indicate that, in comparison to other baselines, racing algorithms provide a faster reduction of the uncertainty in the learning process, especially in the case of imprecise features.

Popularity of one kilometre scale global geophysical models is continuously growing in Europe. In this study, we increase the resolution of the NEMO ocean model, to better identify technical limitations of the present implementation and deduce, from the performance measured on one of our top supercomputers, the hardware characteristics needed to routinely use a global ocean one kilometre configuration. 24,000 Intel Broadwell cores of the Météo-France supercomputer are required to measure the
more &raquo; ... formance of a simplified version of NEMO global kilometre scale. From them, assuming a perfect scaling up to 9,000,000 (nine million) computing cores, we infer that we could target a maximum speed of approximately 2 SYPD with the ORCA-Km global model.

The dynamics of attentional deployment before saccade execution was studied with a dual-task paradigm. Observers made a horizontal saccade whose direction was indicated by a symbolic precue and had to discriminate the orientation of a Gabor patch displayed at different delays after the precue (but before saccade onset). The patch location relative to the saccadic target was indicated to observers before each block. Therefore, on each trial, observers were informed simultaneously about the
more &raquo; ... tive absolute locations of the saccadic and perceptual targets. The main result is that orientational acuity improved over a period of 150Y200 ms after the precue onset at the saccadic target location, where overall performance is best, and at distant locations. This effect is due to attentional factors rather than to an alerting effect. It is also dependent on the efficiency of the temporal masks displayed before and after the Gabor patches.

Seasonally Stratified Analysis of Simulated ENSO Thermodynamics

Using outputs from the SINTEX-F1 coupled GCM, the thermodynamics of ENSO events and its relation with the seasonal cycle are investigated. Simulated El Niño events are first classified into four groups depending on during which season the Niño-3.4 sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) index (5°S-5°N, 120°-170°W) reaches its peak. Although the heat content of the tropical Pacific decreases for all four types, the tropical Pacific loses about twice as much during an El Niño that peaks during
more &raquo; ... er compared with one that peaks during summer. The surface heat flux, the southward heat transport at 15°S, and the Indonesian Throughflow heat transport contribute constructively to this remarkable seasonal difference. It is shown that the Indonesian Throughflow supplies anomalous heat from the Indian Ocean, especially during the summer El Niño-like event. Changes in the basic state provided by the seasonal cycle cause differences in the atmospheric response to the SSTA, which in turn lead to the difference between the surface heat flux and the meridional heat transport anomaly.

Cautious label ranking with label-wise decomposition

In this paper, we are interested in the label ranking problem. We are more specifically interested in the recent trend consisting in predicting partial but more accurate (i.e., making less incorrect statements) orders rather than complete ones. To do so, we propose a ranking method based on label-wise decomposition. We estimate an imprecise probabilistic model over each label rank and we infer a partial order from it using optimisation techniques. This leads to new results concerning a
more &raquo; ... r bilinear assignment problem. Finally, we provide some experiments showing the feasibility of our method.

Tropical Indian Ocean variability revealed by self-organizing maps

The tropical Indian Ocean climate variability is investigated using an artificial neural network analysis called Self-Organizing Map (SOM) for both observational data and coupled model outputs. The SOM successfully captures the dipole sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) pattern associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and basin-wide warming/cooling associated with ENSO. The dipole SSTA pattern appears only in boreal summer and fall, whereas the basin-wide warming/cooling appears mostly
more &raquo; ... n boreal winter and spring owing to the phase-locking nature of these phenomena. Their occurrence also undergoes significant decadal variation. Composite diagrams constructed for nodes in the SOM array based on the simulated SSTA reveal interesting features. For the nodes with the basin-wide warming, a strong positive SSTA in the eastern equatorial Pacific, a negative Southern Oscillation, and a negative precipitation anomaly in East Africa are found. The nodes with the positive IOD are associated with a weak positive SSTA in the central equatorial Pacific or positive SSTA in the eastern equatorial Pacific, a positive (negative) sea level pressure anomaly in the eastern (western) tropical Indian Ocean, and a positive precipitation anomaly over East Africa. The warming in the central equatorial Pacific appears to correspond to El Niño Modoki discussed recently. These results suggest usefulness of SOM in studying large-scale ocean-atmosphere coupled phenomena.
