Norimasa Yoshida, Ryo Fukuda, Takafumi Saito
2010 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
This paper introduces logarithmic curvature and torsion graphs for analyzing planar and space curves. We present a method for drawing these graphs from any differentiable parametric curves and clarify the characteristics of these graphs. We show several examples of theses graphs drawn from planar and 3D Bézier curves. From the graphs, we can see some interesting properties of curves that cannot be derived from the curvature or torsion plots.

2020 Cell Death Discovery
AbstractBMP signaling has been found to have tumor-promoting as well as tumor-suppressing effects in different types of tumors. In this study, we investigated the effects of BMP signaling and of BMP inhibitors on ovarian cancer (OC) cells in vitro and in vivo. High expression of BMP receptor 2 (BMPR2) correlated with poor overall survival of OC patients in the TCGA dataset. Both BMP2 and BMPR2 enhanced OC cell proliferation, whereas BMP receptor kinase inhibitors inhibited OC cell growth in
more » ... culture as well as in a mouse model. BMP2 also augmented sphere formation, migration, and invasion of OC cells, and induced EMT. High BMP2 expression was observed after chemotherapy of OC patients in the GSE109934 dataset. In accordance, carboplatin, used for the treatment of OC patients, increased BMP2 secretion from OC cells, and induced EMT partially via activation of BMP signaling. Our data suggest that BMP signaling has tumor-promoting effects in OC, and that BMP inhibitors might be useful therapeutic agents for OC patients. Considering that carboplatin treatment augmented BMP2 secretion, the possibility to use a combination of BMP inhibitors and carboplatin in the treatment of OC patients, would be worth exploring.

2015 Regenerative Therapy
The injection of endothelial progenitor cells and mononuclear cells derived from bone marrow at the ischemic region of peripheral artery disease patients is reported to be effective for therapeutic angiogenesis; however, these cell therapies require large amounts of bone marrow to obtain sufficient numbers of cells. To solve this problem, we attempted to culture bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC), which are supposed to secrete several cytokines that promote angiogenesis. We
more » ... focused on using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a supplement for cell culture instead of fetal bovine serum. Human BM-MSC obtained from healthy volunteers expanded rapidly when cultured with 10% PRP prepared from their own blood. FACS analysis revealed that these cultured human MSC were homogeneous populations, and chromosomal analysis showed a normal karyotype. Moreover, the angiogenetic effect was apparent two weeks after human BM-MSC were injected into the ischemic muscle in SCID mice. Tumor formation was not detected three months after injection into SCID mice either subcutaneously or intramuscularly. To simulate clinical settings, canine BM-MSC were grown with canine PRP and injected into their ischemic muscles. We confirmed that donor cells existed in situ two and six weeks after operation without any side effects. These results suggest that cultured human BM-MSC can be a promising cell source for therapeutic angiogenesis.

2016 Journal of the City Planning Institute of Japan
As extreme concentration to Tokyo proceeds, relocations of firms to rural areas are needed. However, comparing to Tokyo, Japanese cities in rural areas are disadvantaged in some economic factors. There are 3 approaches to explain the reason why firms relocate to disadvantaged areas network of firms, location condition and city centers. In this paper, the author tried to verify influences of these factors through analyses of individual firms and regions. It can be realized by comparing rational

And regions which attract many firms tend to be good at three factors above. Especially, structure of networks of inter-firm deals of a region is important, and this corresponds to effects of policies which are carried out to make good use of existing firms.

Drug-induced Phospholipidosis -Pathological Aspects and Its Prediction

Takashi Nonoyama, Ryo Fukuda
2008 Journal of Toxicologic Pathology
Drug-induced phospholipidosis (PLDsis) is an excessive accumulation of polar phospholipids in cells or tissues/organs caused by xenobiotics. Numerous drugs and chemicals are capable of inducing the storage disorder in animals and humans; however, despite their diverse pharmacological activities, each of these drugs shares common physicochemical properties: a hydrophobic aromatic ring structure on the molecule and a hydrophilic side chain with a charged cationic amine group and therefore are in
more » ... he group of cationic amphiphilic drugs. In affected cells the appearance of membrane-bound inclusions, primarily lysosomal in origin, with a lamellar structure (lamellar bodies) is a definitive morphologic hallmark. Massive accumulations can occur in animal tissues such as the lung with little effect on organ function. The inducing drug also accumulates in association with the excess phospholipid. Although these alterations are generally reversible after cessation of drug treatment, PLDsis is of regulatory concern and an issue for drug safety for pharmaceutical companies. Thus, the assessment of potential target organ dysfunction and the identification of clinical biomarkers are important objectives for new drug development. Recent advances in biotechnology such as metabonomics and toxicogenomics have been providing novel tools to elucidate the mechanisms of PLDsis and to establish biomarkers for screening tests in the preclinical stages and for monitoring in the clinical phases in addition to conventional approaches such as morphology (lamellar bodies) and biochemical methods including assays of specific metabolites and phospholipase inhibition. Stratification of gastric cancer risk by measuring serological biomarkers is useful for screening of gastric cancer. However, this method has problem such as overlooking past infected patients. We aimed to evaluate the association between Helicobacter pylori infection status and serological biomarkers. We divided 5,268 patients according to Helicobacter pylori infection status and past infected patients were divided into 12 groups according to time elapsed since eradication. We analyzed mean

Mean H. pylori immunoglobulin G antibody showed a decreasing tendency, there was no significant difference from the uninfected group at 11 years after eradication (p = 0.19). PGI, PGII decreased in short term after eradication. However, both PGI and PGII gradually increased as long-term changes after eradication, became comparable to those in the uninfected group (p = 0.41, p = 0.37, respectively). Histological atrophy improved gradually, became equivalent to uninfected group. Endoscopic atrophy score did not improve for long term after eradication. In conclusion, patients with long term after eradication reach the uninfected condition serologically, histologically. Endoscopic assessment of gastric mucosal atrophy may be useful for accurate assessment of gastric cancer risk.

2015 Journal of the City Planning Institute of Japan
Importance to build industrial accumulations on the scale of metropolitan areas in order to develop provincial cities is indicated. However, current policies to promote industrial accumulations don't have the viewpoint of where to locate within metropolitan areas. In this paper the author presented two models of accumulations (central place theory and economic base model) and revealed peculiarity of location depending on distance from city centers analyzing the structure of deals between firms.
more » ... In order to realize this, the author classified companies grounding on distribution (inter/outer the metropolitan area) of their selling and buying. As a result, while industrial accumulations based on central place model in any size of city are formed at city center, industrial accumulations based on core industry model are formed at far suburban areas except large cities populated more than one million.

Analysis of Aspect Ratio in a Miniature Rectangle Channel for Low Frictional Resistance

Takashi Fukuda, Makoto Ryo Harada
2021 Micromachines
We conducted a theoretical investigation of the cross-sectional aspect ratio of a rectangular channel to have sufficiently low frictional resistance under less than 150 of the Reynolds number. From the theoretical consideration, it was clarified that 3.40 or more is recommended as a criterion for determining the aspect ratio. This addresses the problem of determining the interval of rectangle channels, installed in a plate reactor. There is a concern that the real system does not follow the
more » ... ytical solution, assuming laminar flow, since the higher aspect ratio leads to disturbances of the flow such as the emergence of vortices. However, in the channel's volume range of (W × H × L) = (7.0 mm × 0.38 mm × 0.26 m), such a turbulence was not observed in the detailed numerical calculation by CFD, where both calculation results were in agreement to within 3% accuracy. Moreover, even in an experimental system with a surface roughness of ca. 7%, friction resistance took agreement within an accuracy of ±30%.
