Male circumcision performed with 8-figure non-absorbable suture technique

We analyze the outcome of circumcisions performed with 8-figure non-absorbable suture (8FNS) and assess the feasibility of using the technique in male circumcision.Methods: We randomly divided 317 patients who would undergo circumcision between February 2009 and January 2012 into 2 groups. Each group was subdivided into children (age range: 7 to 15 years) and adult (range: 16 to 85 years). more » ... res (CAS) were used for the circumcised wound closure. The results of 2 groups were compared. We also performed a cost analysis and a mean 6-month follow-up (range:1-12). Chi-square and Student's t-test were used in statistical analysis. Differences were considered significant (p < 0.05).Results: No patients were required to remove their sutures postoperatively.Among them, the sutures of the 8FNS for circumcision felloff spontaneously within 9 days (6.2 ± 1.57). There was no statisticallysignificant difference between the 2 groups in surgical duration (16.2 ± 1.73 vs. 15.8 ± 2.01) and follow-up time (6.4 ± 3.82 vs. 6.2 ± 2.39). The overall complication rate of the 2 groups was 6.63% and 10.53% (p = 0.15), respectively. In addition, the complication rate among the adults was significantly lower in the 8FNS group compared to children (2.53% vs. 10.34%, p = 0.04). Also, the average cost (in US dollars) of 8FNS for circumcision was $20.7 ± $3.83 less than $35.8 ± $5.02 of CAS, which is a very significant difference (p < 0.0001).Conclusions: 8FNS for circumcision is feasible, easy, safe and cost-effective, especially for adult males.

Berkovich Nanoindentation on AlN Thin Films

Berkovich nanoindentation-induced mechanical deformation mechanisms of AlN thin films have been investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) techniques. AlN thin films are deposited on the metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) derived Si-doped (2 9 10 17 cm -3 ) GaN template by using the helicon sputtering system. The hardness and Young's modulus of AlN thin films were measured by a Berkovich nanoindenter operated with the continuous contact stiffness measurements (CSM) option. The obtained values of the hardness and Young's modulus are 22 and 332 GPa, respectively. The XTEM images taken in the vicinity regions just underneath the indenter tip revealed that the multiple "pop-ins" observed in the load-displacement curve during loading are due primarily to the activities of dislocation nucleation and propagation. The absence of discontinuities in the unloading segments of load-displacement curve suggests that no pressure-induced phase transition was involved. Results obtained in this study may also have technological implications for estimating possible mechanical damages induced by the fabrication processes of making the AlNbased devices.

Mechanical Properties of Cu2O Thin Films by Nanoindentation

In this study, the structural and nanomechanical properties of Cu 2 O thin films are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nanoindentation techniques. The Cu 2 O thin films are deposited on the glass substrates with the various growth temperatures of 150, 250 and 350 °C by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Results indicated that the hardness and Young's modulus of Cu 2 O thin films decreased as the growth temperature increased from 150 to 350 °C. Furthermore, the relationship between the hardness and films grain size appears to closely follow the Hall-Petch equation.

Titanium alloy billets were continuously cast and directionally solidified under vacuum and compelling cooling conditions by using round or rectangular cross-section cold crucible. It is found that hot crack is caused by friction between the skull and the inner wall of crucible, a coating of CaO and CaF 2 flux can eliminate the hot cracks. The experimental results show that the withdrawal velocity, where the changes was setting as 5, 3, 1, 0.5mm/min respectively, is the significant factor that

Directional columnar grains and a single crystal can be obtained when the velocity is controlled to either 1 or 0.5mm/min under a round cross-section crucible, and columnar grains can be also obtained at the speed of 2mm/min under a rectangular cross-section crucible. Finally, the temperature fields during the process are calculated and the trend of solidification front is in good agreement with the experiment. Specimens composed of columnar grains or single crystal exhibit excellent tensile properties.

The communication between organs participates in the regulation of body homeostasis under physiological conditions and the progression and adaptation of diseases under pathological conditions. The communication between the liver and the eyes has been received more and more attention. In this review, we summarized some molecular mediators that can reflect the relationship between the liver and the eye, and then extended the metabolic relationship between the liver and the eye. more » ... some typical diseases and phenotypes that have been able to reflect the liver-eye connection in the clinic, especially non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). The close connection between the liver and the eye is reflected through multiple pathways such as metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In addition, we presented the connection between the liver and the eye in traditional Chinese medicine, and introduced the fact that artificial intelligence may use the close connection between the liver and the eye to help us solve some practical clinical problems. Paying attention to liver-eye communication will help us have a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of certain communication between liver diseases and eyes, and provide new ideas for their potential therapeutic strategy.

Acute antibody-mediated rejection after intestinal transplantation

AIM To investigate the incidence, risk factors and clinical outcomes of acute antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) after intestinal transplantation (ITx). METHODS A retrospective single-center analysis was performed to identify cases of acute ABMR after ITx, based on the presence of donor-specific antibody (DSA), acute tissue damage, C4d deposition, and allograft dysfunction. RESULTS Acute ABMR was identified in 18 (10.3%) out of 175 intestinal allografts with an average occurrence of 10 d
more » ... 4-162) after ITx. All acute ABMR cases were presensitized to donor human leukocyte antigens class Ⅰ and/or Ⅱ antigens with a detectable DSA. A positive cross-match was seen in 14 (77.8%) cases and twelve of 18 patients (66.7%) produced newly-formed DSA following ITx. Histological characteristics of acute ABMR include endothelial C4d deposits, interstitial hemorrhage, and severe congestion with focal fibrin thrombin in the lamina propria capillaries. Multivariate analysis identified a liver-free graft and high level of panel reactive antibody Retrospective Study as a significant independent risk factor. Despite initial improvement after therapy, eleven recipients (61.1%) lost transplant secondary to rejection. Of those, 9 (50%) underwent graft removal and 4 (22.2%) received second transplantation following acute ABMR. At an average follow-up of 32.3 mo (range, 13.3-76.4), 8 (44.4%) recipients died. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that acute ABMR is an important cause of intestine graft dysfunction, particularly in a liver-exclusive graft and survivors are at an increased risk of developing refractory acute rejection and chronic rejection. More effective strategies to prevent and manage acute ABMR are needed to improve outcomes.

Wavefunction is the foundation of quantum theory, which is assumed to give a complete description of a quantum system. For a long time, wavefunction is introduced as an abstract element of the theory and there lacks effective ways to measure it directly. The situation, however, is somewhat changed when Lundeen et al. reported the direct measurement of the quantum wavefunction via weak measurements, which gives the wavefunction a clearly operational definition [Nature 474, 188 (2011)]. more » ... easurement method requires sequential measurements of conjugate observables position and momentum with the position measurement is weak enough. Surprisingly, the recent research by Vallone and Dequal shows that performing sequential strong measurements realizes the same target, in which case no approximation has to be made compared to the case of weak measurements[Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 040502 (2016)]. Here we experimentally report the direct measurement of the two-dimensional transverse wavefunction of photons via strong measurements for the first time, which implies that an accurate and clear operational definition can be given to wavefunction. We have measured the Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian of l = 1 spatial wavefunctions of photons with R-square are 0.97 and 0.93 respectively. As a potentially important application, we show that the direct measurement of two-dimensional wavefunction provides an alternative way to realize digital holography of three-dimensional objects. The results presented here will not only deepen our understanding of abstract wavefunction but also have significant applications in quantum information processing and quantum imaging.

MiR-155, a potential serum marker of extramammary Paget's disease

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD), a rare skin malignancy with non-specific manifestations, is often misdiagnosed as eczema of scrotum or tinea cruris. Although the diagnosis of EMPD could be confirmed by biopsy, it can be delayed as patients are reluctant to receive invasive operations. more » ... D. Altogether 45 subjects including 16 patients diagnosed with EMPD, 12 patients diagnosed with eczema of scrotum or tinea cruris and 17 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Serum from all of subjects were collected to identify miRNAs (by miRNA array global normalization, RT-PCR validation, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis) that could be potential diagnostic markers for EMPD. The miRNA array analyses revealed that the expressions of 37 miRNAs from the EMPD patients were different (change ≥4-fold) from health volunteers. Among these miRNAs, the expression of miR-155 was significantly increased (p < 0.01) in the EMPD patients as compared with that of the health volunteers and the eczema of scrotum or the tinea cruris patients (no difference between these two control groups). In addition, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that diagnostic capacities (defined as the area under curve of ROC) of miR-155 are 0.85 (as compared with health volunteers group) and 0.81 (as compared with the eczema of scrotum or the tinea cruris patients group), respectively. The serum miRNA expression of gene miR-155 in the EMPD patients was differentiated from that of other subjects warranting further validation of miR-155 as a diagnostic marker of EMPD.
