FLCD: A Flexible Low Complexity Design of Coded Distributed Computing
[article]

pre-print
We propose a flexible low complexity design (FLCD) of coded distributed computing (CDC) with empirical evaluation on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). CDC can expedite MapReduce like computation by trading increased map computations to reduce communication load and shuffle time. A main novelty of FLCD is to utilize the design freedom in defining map and reduce functions to develop asymptotic homogeneous systems to support varying intermediate values (IV) sizes under a general MapReduce

... framework. Compared to existing designs with constant IV sizes, FLCD offers greater flexibility in adapting to network parameters and significantly reduces the implementation complexity by requiring fewer input files and shuffle groups. The FLCD scheme is the first proposed low-complexity CDC design that can operate on a network with an arbitrary number of nodes and computation load. We perform empirical evaluations of the FLCD by executing the TeraSort algorithm on an Amazon EC2 cluster. This is the first time that theoretical predictions of the CDC shuffle time are validated by empirical evaluations. The evaluations demonstrate a 2.0 to 4.24x speedup compared to conventional uncoded MapReduce, a 12% to 52% reduction in total time, and a wider range of operating network parameters compared to existing CDC schemes.

Compounds 4-6 were isolated from U. australis for the first time. These compounds, together with the previously isolated secondary metabolites of this alga, were investigated for their inhibitory effects on human recombinant aldose reductase in vitro. Of the compounds, 24R,28S and 24S,28R-epoxy-24-ethylcholesterol (5) glycerol, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and 8-hydroxy-(6E)-octenoic acid weakly inhibited the enzyme, while the three new sterols, 1-3, were almost inactive.

Optimum multicast of multimedia streams
1999
Computers & Operations Research
Scope and purpose As multimedia service becomes more widely used through computer networks, conserving network resources becomes increasingly important. Multicast communications can save network bandwidths when delivering data to multiple destinations. Therefore, many researchers have given much attention to multicast routing problems. Most of the multicast routing problems only consider a single multicast session. However, in the real world, several multicast sessions will be broadcast,

... neously. These multicast sessions will contend for the limited resources (such as bandwidth) of networks. This creates a new network optimization problem which is different from any other multicast routing problem. In this research, we studied an optimal video distribution problem which arises from video on demand (VOD) systems with multiple multicast sessions. We believe that the results are useful for improving video distribution methods in multimedia networks. In addition, this study would be applicable on the field of network flows, especially multicommodity flows. Abstract In a VOD system, multicast is a preferred method for saving network bandwidth. That is, customers requesting the same video program over a small time interval can be arranged in a multicast tree (group), and 0305-0548/99/$ -see front matter 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. PII: S 0 30 5-05 4 8 (9 8 )0 0 07 5 -6 then the video server sends a video stream via this tree to customers. In this research, we considered how to arrange a set of multicast trees such that the number of customers served is maximized and the link capacity constraint is maintained. For a directed acyclic graph (DAG), we proposed a branch-and-bound algorithm to solve this problem and the solution method is illustrated by example. Next, we extended the algorithm to find an approximate solution for a general graph case. It is shown, through simulations on randomly generated graphs that the solution for our approximation method is very close to the optimal solution.
Hovering UAV-Based FSO Communications: Channel Modelling, Performance Analysis, and Parameter Optimization

Relay-assisted free-space optical (FSO) communication systems are exploited as a means to mitigate the limiting effects of the turbulence induced atmospheric scintillation. However, conventional ground relays are stationary, and their optimal placement is not always feasible. Due to their mobility and flexibility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide new opportunities for FSO relaying systems. In this paper, a hovering UAV-based serial FSO decode-and-forward relaying system is investigated.

... n the channel modelling for such a system, four types of impairments (i.e., atmospheric loss, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, and link interruption due to angle-of-arrival fluctuation) are considered. Based on the proposed channel model, a tractable expression for the probability density function of the total channel gain is obtained. Closed-form expressions of the link outage probability and end-to-end outage probability are derived. Asymptotic outage performance bounds for each link and the overall system are also presented to reveal insights into the impacts of different impairments. To improve system performance, we optimize the beam width, field-of-view and UAVs' locations. Numerical results show that the derived theoretical expressions are accurate to evaluate the outage performance of the system. Moreover, the proposed optimization schemes are efficient and can improve performance significantly.
Impaired hippocampal functional connectivity in patients with drug resistant, generalized tonic-clonic seizures
2019
NeuroReport
The aim of this study was to better understand the imaging features of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), especially in idiopathic generalized tonic-clonic seizure (GTCS), as well as to discover the associated mechanisms and functional connectivity (FC). A total of 31 idiopathic generalized epilepsy-GTCS patients and 17 healthy controls were enrolled. For each patient, resting-state functional MRI was performed. After a 12-month follow-up observation, patients were further divided into either

... esistant (DR) or drug-sensitive (DS) groups. Compared to the DS group, DR patients had previously received more types of antiepileptic drugs and had taken more types of failed antiepileptic drugs. There were distinct FC changes toward the left thalamus, left putamen, left precuneus, and right precentral gyrus in the left hippocampus between DR and DS patients. FCs in the DR group largely decreased or remained unchanged, while DS patients exhibited compensatory enhancement. Disease duration was negatively correlated with FC between the left hippocampus and the left thalamus-putamen in patients with DRE. Further, DRE patients had an extremely high area under the curve (0.978) and a cut-off FC between the left hippocampus and thalamus-putamen of 0.282. Together, hippocampal FCs in patients with DR GTCS were impaired and time-dependently correlated with disease duration. Hippocampal FCs in DS patients showed overall compensatory enhancement, which could be used as a sensitive and specific marker to identify and predict DR GTCS.
Lensless Fourier-Transform Terahertz Digital Holography for Full-Field Reflective Imaging
2022
Frontiers in Physics
Continuous-wave terahertz digital holography (TDH) is a full-field lensless phase imaging approach usually with the coherent THz laser. It has the potential to be applied to nondestructive testing. In order to simplify the reconstruction and utilize the THz radiation with higher efficiency, a full-field reflective lensless Fourier-transform TDH (RLF-TDH) configuration is proposed with oblique illumination mode based on 2.52 THz radiation. A spherical reference beam is generated by a reflective

... oncave mirror in order to reduce the loss of THz radiation, which is different from other configurations of the same kind. In the reconstruction process, the complex-amplitude image can be obtained by directly applying single Fourier transform to the digital hologram; thus, it is very possible to achieve real-time imaging. A tilted plane correction method is implemented to correct the anamorphism caused by the nonparallel planes between the object and recording plane. The profile information of the object can be measured from the unwrapped, aberration-free phase image. Two reflective gold-coated samples are adopted to demonstrate the validity of the RLF-TDH imaging system.

All included patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination that included a fundus examination and retinal photographs and that assigned a grade for the severity of retinopathy according to the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study(ETDRS)severity scale. Patients with severe non-proliferative or proliferative diabetic retinopathy and clinically significant macular edema(CSME)required ophthalmic therapy were assigned to the need-treatment group, while the remaining patients with DR were assigned to the need-observation group. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to determine the required-treatment rate and risk factors for DR. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios(OR)and 95% confidence intervals(CI)after adjustment for age, gender and the duration of diabetes.RESULTS: DR was present in 334(11.68%)of the 2859 community residents aged >60 years old and 1097(25.66%)of the 4275 hospital patients with T2DM, and 48(14.81%)of the residents and 172(15.68%)of the hospital patients required ophthalmic therapy.
