Bilateral deep vein thrombosis (DVT) should prompt investigation for pro-thrombotic conditions and the exclusion of vascular compromise due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The authors present the case of a 47-year-old man admitted with bilateral DVT and diagnosed with inferior vena cava (IVC) infra-renal segment agenesis, and discuss the management of this rare condition.

OBJECTIVES This study aims to: a) review cases of dogs with suspected cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV), evaluating if the cutaneous lesions correlated with the development of acute kidney injury (AKI), b) to assess negative prognostic factors in dogs with suspected CRGV. METHODS A retrospective study including dogs with suspected CRGV presented to 26 first opinion emergency practices in the United Kingdom. Their history, clinical signs, clinicopathological findings, diagnostics, treatment plan, and outcome were reviewed.

Introdução: A Disfunção Temporomandibular (DTM) consiste em alterações fisiológicas da Articulação Temporomandibular (ATM), que está inserida no sistema estomatognático. O diagnóstico inicial pode ser difícil devido à complexidade da ATM e sua relação com as demais estruturas anatômicas da face. Objetivos: Avaliar a prevalência de sinais e sintomas de disfunção temporomandibular e ansiedade em alunos dos cursos da área de saúde (Biomedicina, Farmácia, Fisioterapia, Nutrição, Medicina e
more » ... ia) da Faculdade Santa Maria, Cajazeiras, Paraíba, Brasil. Métodos: Essa pesquisa caracteriza-se como transversal, de natureza exploratória e de caráter descritivo/quantitativo, foram avaliados 130 universitários. Com o intuito de investigar possíveis associações entre a DTM e a ansiedade foram empregados questionários estruturados e validados na literatura. Com relação a avaliação dos sinais e sintomas da DTM e da ansiedade foram selecionados dois instrumentos, respectivamente: O Índice de Fonseca que avalia sinais e sintomas de DTM e o Índice de Ansiedade Traço-Estado (IDATE). Resultados: Os dados obtidos indicam que a maioria da amostra é composta por estudantes do curso de odontologia (80%). Além disso, 59% dos alunos apresentou algum grau de disfunção, tendo a maioria como grau leve. mais prevalente foi o grau moderado. Conclusão: Conclui-se que houve uma alta prevalência de disfunção temporomandibular e ansiedade nos estudantes de odontologia, enquanto nos demais cursos ficaram entre leve e moderada. Sugere-se que uma abordagem terapêutica multidisciplinar seja realizada para os grupos estudados, tendo em vista o caráter multifatorial das desordens temporomandibulares.

In this work, the removal potential of Cu2+ ions by non-living macrophytes Egeria densa has been studied. Adsorption kinetic and equilibrium tests were carried out in flasks under batch operations and controlled pH and temperature. The biosorption kinetic results have shown that Cu2+ ions removal rate was at its maximum at the beginning of the process. The equilibrium state was achieved after 60 min, and the Cu2+ ions removal was higher than 70% for the given experimental conditions. The
more » ... biosorption data were better fitted by using a pseudo second order model. The equilibrium data at pH 5 were better described by the Langmuir isotherm than the Freundlich one, with a maximum metal content value of 1.47 mequiv⋅g-1 and an adsorption rate value of 3.73 l⋅mequiv-1. The kinetic parameters values were in agreement with other biosorbents data published in the literature, indicating that the macrophytes E. densa have a good potential to be used as biosorbent material in industrial effluent treatment system.

El recargue por soldadura con arco sumergido (SAW, según sus siglas en inglés) se aplica con frecuencia en piezas que trabajan en condiciones de desgaste abrasivo. Los fundentes comerciales que se utilizan son obtenidos a partir de minerales naturales. more » ... z. Se elaboraron fundentes por peletización con base en un diseño de tipo McLean-Anderson. Con los fundentes experimentales se obtuvieron depósitos, que fueron caracterizados químicamente. Se obtuvieron modelos de la composición de los elementos en el metal depositado en función de la composición del fundente y fue realizado un proceso de optimización. Se concluye, que los contenidos de los elementos en el metal depositado muestran una dependencia cuadrática, siendo el contenido de carbono (C) gobernado por el de grafito en el fundente, mientras los contenidos de cromo (Cr), manganeso (Mn) y silicio (Si) son gobernados por el contenido de FeCrMn.

Identification of epileptic brain states by dynamic functional connectivity analysis of simultaneous EEG-fMRI: a dictionary learning approach

Most fMRI studies of the brain's intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) have assumed that this is static; however, it is now clear that it changes over time. This is particularly relevant in epilepsy, which is characterized by a continuous interchange between epileptic and normal brain states associated with the occurrence of epileptic activity. Here, we propose an l1-norm regularized dictionary learning (l1-DL) approach for dFC state estimation, which allows an intermediate and flexible degree of sparsity in time, and demonstrate its application in the identification of epilepsy-related dFC states using simultaneous EEG-fMRI data. With this l1-DL approach, we aim to accommodate a potentially varying degree of sparsity upon the interchange between epileptic and non-epileptic dFC states. The simultaneous recording of the EEG is used to extract time courses representative of epileptic activity, which are incorporated into the fMRI dFC state analysis to inform the selection of epilepsy-related dFC states. We found that the proposed l1-DL method performed best at identifying epilepsy-related dFC states, when compared with two alternative methods of extreme sparsity (k-means clustering, maximum; and principal component analysis, minimum), as well as an l0-norm regularization framework (l0-DL), with a fixed amount of temporal sparsity. We further showed that epilepsy-related dFC states provide novel insights into the dynamics of epileptic networks, which go beyond the information provided by more conventional EEG-correlated fMRI analysis, and which were concordant with the clinical profile of each patient. In addition to its application in epilepsy, our study provides a new dFC state identification method of potential relevance for studying brain functional connectivity dynamics in general.

Os modelos de simulação são ferramentas utilizadas na área de agrometeorologia para quantificar o desenvolvimento de culturas agrícolas e florestais. O trabalho teve como objetivo comparar os modelos do Filocrono (linear) e de Wang e Engel (não linear) para estimar o desenvolvimento foliar, através do aparecimento de folhas, nas cultivares de oliveira 'Arbequina' e 'MGS ASC315' durante a fase de muda. O experimento foi instalado no campo experimental da Empresa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais

IG), Maria da Fé (MG), sob o delineamento inteiramente casualizado e organizado em arranjo fatorial, sendo duas cultivares e nove épocas de transplantio com 15 repetições em cada tratamento. Os coeficientes dos modelos foram estimados pelos dados obtidos nas três primeiras épocas de transplantio e as demais épocas foram utilizadas para avaliar o desempenho dos modelos. As respostas dos modelos foram divergentes para os dois modelos. O modelo de Wang e Engel foi mais eficiente para a cultivar 'Arbequina', com raiz do quadrado médio do erro (RQME) de 3,41 folhas, enquanto a cultivar 'MGS ASC315' teve a RQME de 6,58 folhas. O modelo do Filocrono se mostrou mais eficiente para a cultivar 'MG ASC315' com RQME de 2,98 folhas, inferior ao da cultivar 'Arbequina', com RQME de 7,49 folhas.
