The Elo rating system measures the approximate skill of each competitor in a game or sport. As a competitor competes, their rating changes based on their wins and losses. Increasing one's rating can be difficult work; one must hone their skills and consistently beat the competition. Alternatively, with enough money you can rig the outcome of games to boost your rating. Say you manage to get together n people (including yourself) and acquire enough money to rig k games. How high can you get your
more &raquo; ... rating? The people you gathered aren't very interested in the game, and will only play if you pay them to. We resolve this question for n=2 and n=Ω(k^1/3) (up to a log factor) for the standard Elo system, and provide close upper and lower bounds for a wider class of rating systems that resemble Elo.

The application of cryogenic single photon detectors has found great use in high precision particle physics experiments such as ALPS (Any Light Particle Search) II, which implements it for fundamental studies to search for new particles. ALPS II is a light-shining-through-a-wall experiment searching for axion-like-particles, which couple to photons. The extremely low rate of photons generated by the conversion of such axion-like-particles necessitates a detector setup capable of low energy (~ 1
more &raquo; ... eV; as dictated by cavity optics) single photon detection with high efficiency and an ultra-low background level, with long-term stability. This can be realised by a Transition Edge Sensor (TES) setup with low-temperature SQUID readout.

Let M be an arbitrary n by n matrix of rank n-k. We study the condition number of M plus a low-rank perturbation UV^T where U, V are n by k random Gaussian matrices. Under some necessary assumptions, it is shown that M+UV^T is unlikely to have a large condition number. The main advantages of this kind of perturbation over the well-studied dense Gaussian perturbation, where every entry is independently perturbed, is the O(nk) cost to store U,V and the O(nk) increase in time complexity for
more &raquo; ... ing the matrix-vector multiplication (M+UV^T)x. This improves the Ω(n^2) space and time complexity increase required by a dense perturbation, which is especially burdensome if M is originally sparse. Our results also extend to the case where U and V have rank larger than k and to symmetric and complex settings. We also give an application to linear systems solving and perform some numerical experiments. Lastly, barriers in applying low-rank noise to other problems studied in the smoothed analysis framework are discussed.

Determinants of binary matrices achieve every integral value up to Ω(2^n/n) [article]

This work shows that the smallest natural number d_n that is not the determinant of some n× n binary matrix is at least c 2^n/n for c=1/201. That same quantity naturally lower bounds the number of distinct integers D_n which can be written as the determinant of some n× n binary matrix. This asymptotically improves the previous result of d_n=Ω(1.618^n) and slightly improves the previous result of D_n≥ 2^n/g(n) for a particular g(n)=ω(n^2) function.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major global health issue. Approximately 250 million new cases of STDs occur each year globally. Currently, only three STDs (human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis A, and hepatitis B) are preventable by vaccines. Vaccines for other STDs, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, await successful development. Currently, all of these STDs are treated with antibiotics. However, the efficacy of antibiotics is facing growing challenge due to the
more &raquo; ... of bacterial resistance. Therefore, alternative therapeutic approaches, including the development of vaccines against these STDs, should be explored to tackle this important global public health issue. Mass vaccination could be more efficient in reducing the spread of these highly contagious diseases. Bacterial outer membrane vesicle (OMV) is a potential antigen used to prevent STDs. OMVs are released spontaneously during growth by many Gram-negative bacteria. They present a wide range of surface antigens in native conformation that possess interesting properties such as immunogenicity, adjuvant potential, and the ability to be taken up by immune cells, all of which make them an attractive target for application as vaccines against pathogenic bacteria. The major challenge associated with the use of OMVs is its fragile structure and stability. However, a particulate form of the vaccine could be a suitable delivery system that can protect the antigen from degradation by a harsh acidic or enzymatic environment. The particulate form of the vaccine can also act as an adjuvant by itself. This review will highlight some practical methods for formulating microparticulate OMV-based vaccines for STDs.
