Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called purely cosmetic if their surgered manifolds are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds. Gordon conjectured that non-trivial knots in S^3 do not admit purely cosmetic surgeries. In this article, we confirm this conjecture for cable knots.

Tracking for Half an Hour [article]

Long-term tracking requires extreme stability to the multitude of model updates and robustness to the disappearance and loss of the target as such will inevitably happen. For motivation, we have taken 10 randomly selected OTB-sequences, doubled each by attaching a reversed version and repeated each double sequence 20 times. On most of these repetitive videos, the best current tracker performs worse on each loop. This illustrates the difference between optimization for short-term versus
more » ... tracking. In a long-term tracker a combined global and local search strategy is beneficial, allowing for recovery from failures and disappearance. Most importantly, the proposed tracker also employs cautious updating, guided by self-quality assessment. The proposed tracker is still among the best on the 20-sec OTB-videos while achieving state-of-the-art on the 100-sec UAV20L benchmark. On 10 new half-an-hour videos with city bicycling, sport games etc, the proposed tracker outperforms others by a large margin where the 2010 TLD tracker comes second.

Siamese Instance Search for Tracking [article]

In this paper we present a tracker, which is radically different from state-of-the-art trackers: we apply no model updating, no occlusion detection, no combination of trackers, no geometric matching, and still deliver state-of-the-art tracking performance, as demonstrated on the popular online tracking benchmark (OTB) and six very challenging YouTube videos. The presented tracker simply matches the initial patch of the target in the first frame with candidates in a new frame and returns the
more » ... similar patch by a learned matching function. The strength of the matching function comes from being extensively trained generically, i.e., without any data of the target, using a Siamese deep neural network, which we design for tracking. Once learned, the matching function is used as is, without any adapting, to track previously unseen targets. It turns out that the learned matching function is so powerful that a simple tracker built upon it, coined Siamese INstance search Tracker, SINT, which only uses the original observation of the target from the first frame, suffices to reach state-of-the-art performance. Further, we show the proposed tracker even allows for target re-identification after the target was absent for a complete video shot.

Human identification based on radar micro-Doppler signatures separation

In this Letter, the authors propose a method for personnel recognition using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) based on human micro-Doppler (m-D) signal separation. In which, the m-D separation algorithm is firstly performed to separate m-D signal induced by limbs movement and Doppler signal caused by torso motion, which can highlight the difference contained limbs' m-D signatures between the same activity of different people. The method is validated on real data measured with a 5.8 GHz radar system. Experimental results show that an average recognition accuracy of about 90% can be achieved for different human group sizes.

Visual Concept Detection and Real Time Object Detection [article]

Bag-of-words model is implemented and tried on 10-class visual concept detection problem. The experimental results show that "DURF+ERT+SVM" outperforms "SIFT+ERT+SVM" both in detection performance and computation efficiency. Besides, combining DURF and SIFT results in even better detection performance. Real-time object detection using SIFT and RANSAC is also tried on simple objects, e.g. drink can, and good result is achieved.

G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) signaling is activated in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC); however, the detailed mechanisms of its regulation remain unclear. The present study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in GPER activation in TNBC. In MDA-MB-231 cells, a TNBC cell line, NHERF1 interaction with GPER was verified by co-immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescent staining assays. Overexpression of NHERF1 in MDA-MB-231 cells inhibited GPER-mediated
more » ... n and phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and Akt. Furthermore, NHERF1 expression levels were negatively correlated with the gene signatures of GPER activation, ERK1/2 and Akt signaling, and cell proliferation in early stage of TNBC tumors from the TCGA data set. Taken together, NHERF1 inhibited the activation of GPER-mediated signaling and suppressed the proliferation of triple-negative breast cancer cells. Loss of NHERF1 expression may play a pivotal role in the early stage of TNBC carcinogenesis.

In this paper, we construct an infinite family of q-1/2-ovoids of the generalized quadrangle Q(4,q), for q≡ 1 (mod 4) and q>5. Together with the examples given by Bamberg et al. and constructions provided by Feng et al., this establishes the existence of q-1/2-ovoids in Q(4,q) for each odd prime power q.

A Robust Effect Size Index

Effect size indices are useful tools in study design and reporting because they are unitless measures of association strength that do not depend on sample size. Existing effect size indices are developed for particular parametric models or population parameters. Here, we propose a robust effect size index based on M-estimators. This approach yields an index that is very generalizable because it is unitless across a wide range of models. We demonstrate that the new index is a function of Cohen's
more » ... d, [Formula: see text], and standardized log odds ratio when each of the parametric models is correctly specified. We show that existing effect size estimators are biased when the parametric models are incorrect (e.g., under unknown heteroskedasticity). We provide simple formulas to compute power and sample size and use simulations to assess the bias and standard error of the effect size estimator in finite samples. Because the new index is invariant across models, it has the potential to make communication and comprehension of effect size uniform across the behavioral sciences.

Optimal Designs of Two-Phase Studies

The two-phase design is a cost-effective sampling strategy to evaluate the effects of covariates on an outcome when certain covariates are too expensive to be measured on all study subjects. Under such a design, the outcome and inexpensive covariates are measured on all subjects in the first phase and the first-phase information is used to select subjects for measurements of expensive covariates in the second phase. more » ... edures rather than the design aspects. We investigate the design efficiency of the two-phase study, as measured by the semiparametric efficiency bound for estimating the regression coefficients of expensive covariates. We consider general two-phase studies, where the outcome variable can be continuous, discrete, or censored, and the second-phase sampling can depend on the first-phase data in any manner. We develop optimal or approximately optimal two-phase designs, which can be substantially more efficient than the existing designs. We demonstrate the improvements of the new designs over the existing ones through extensive simulation studies and two large medical studies.
