Palavras-chave: Austrália, estratégico, mercado, operacional Marketing in beef cattle Abstract Brazil has a cattle herd of approximately 200 million head's. This quote causes a need for a well planned marketing in order to have the largest possible domain of the world market for meat. In livestock elite in a lower level of access also makes use of marketing, this is responsible for disseminating advances in breeding, later applied to the commercial herd, improving their quality. It is knowing the forms and stages of marketing that you can apply it efficiently, and this divided into two, strategic marketing (long term) and operational (short term). These strategies have four fundamentals, analysis, adaptation, activation and evaluation. Understanding marketing is necessary to evaluate the Brazilian market in the country, is very promising due to an improvement in income Brazilians. PUBVET, This shows that the global demand for beef will come from developing countries, where Brazil is a great example, by producing high quality meat and sell the same price as the meat more expensive in the U.S.. The luxury product is globalized and Brazil has niches and market segments that pay as well as the best U.S. and Europe. An important example to follow in this area is Australia, a country that has invested in marketing and today possesses a strong brand in the meat market. The objective of this literature is describe the types of existing marketing and its stages and characteristics define the segments of marketing in agribusiness, and analyze the market for beef cattle production in Brazil and worldwide. There is a need for marketing to suit the global market segment, and also the condition of Brazil within this segment, beef cattle, was also observed the importance of marketing in livestock elite, whose function is to disseminate good product was then applied to the commercial herd in the form of genetic quality.

Andre Patricio, Rafael S. Costa, Rui Henriques
2020 medRxiv   pre-print
The current SARS-COV-2 epidemic is associated with nearly 1 million estimated deaths and responsible for multiple disturbances around the world, including the overload of health care systems. The timely prediction of the medical needs of infected individuals enables a better and quicker care provision for the necessary cases, supporting the management of available resources. This work ascertains the predictability of medical needs (as hospitalization, respiratory support, and admission to
more » ... ive care units) and the survivability of individuals testing SARS-CoV-2 positive considering a cohort with all infected individuals in Portugal as per June 30, 2020. Predictions are performed at the various stages of a patients cycle, namely: pre-hospitalization (testing time), pos-hospitalization, and pos-intensive care. A thorough optimization of state-of-the-art predictors is undertaken to assess the ability to anticipate medical needs and infection outcomes using demographic and comorbidity variables, as well as onset date of symptoms, test and hospitalization.

DI2: prior-free and multi-item discretization ofbiomedical data and its applications [article]

Leonardo Alexandre, Rafael S. Costa, Rui Henriques
2021 arXiv   pre-print
Motivation: A considerable number of data mining approaches for biomedical data analysis, including state-of-the-art associative models, require a form of data discretization. Although diverse discretization approaches have been proposed, they generally work under a strict set of statistical assumptions which are arguably insufficient to handle the diversity and heterogeneity of clinical and molecular variables within a given dataset. In addition, although an increasing number of symbolic
more » ... ches in bioinformatics are able to assign multiple items to values occurring near discretization boundaries for superior robustness, there are no reference principles on how to perform multi-item discretizations. Results: In this study, an unsupervised discretization method, DI2, for variables with arbitrarily skewed distributions is proposed. DI2 provides robust guarantees of generalization by placing data corrections using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test before statistically fitting distribution candidates. DI2 further supports multi-item assignments. Results gathered from biomedical data show its relevance to improve classic discretization choices.

On the predictability of postoperative complications for cancer patients: a Portuguese cohort study [article]

Daniel Mateus Goncalves, Rui Henriques, Lucio Santos, Rafael S Costa
2021 medRxiv   pre-print
Postoperative complications following cancer surgeries are still hard to predict despite the historical efforts towards the creation of standard clinical risk scores. The differences among score calculators, contribute for the creation of highly specialized tools, with poor reusability in foreign contexts, resulting in larger prediction errors in clinical practice. This work aims to predict postoperative complications risk for cancer patients, offering two major contributions. First, to develop
more » ... and evaluate a machine learning-based risk score, specific for the Portuguese population using a retrospective cohort of 847 cancer patients undergoing surgery between 2016 and 2018, predicting 4 outcomes of interest: i) existence of postoperative complications, ii) severity level of complications, iii) number of days in the Intermediate Care Unit (ICU), and iv) postoperative mortality within 1 year. An additional cohort of 137 cancer patients was used to validate the models. Second, to support the study with relevant findings and improve the interpretability of predictive models. In order to achieve these objectives, a robust methodology for the learning of risk predictors is proposed, offering new perspectives and insights into the clinical decision process. For postoperative complication's the mean Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) was 0.69, for complications severity mean AUC was 0.65, for the days in the ICU the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) was 1.07 days, and for one-year postoperative mortality the mean AUC was 0.74, calculated on the development cohort. In this study, risk predictive models which may help guide physicians at estimating cancer patient's risk of developing surgical complications were developed. Additionally, a web-based decision support system is further provided to this end.
