Precise Pollen Grain Detection in Bright Field Microscopy Using Deep Learning Techniques

The determination of daily concentrations of atmospheric pollen is important in the medical and biological fields. Obtaining pollen concentrations is a complex and time-consuming task for specialized personnel. The automatic location of pollen grains is a handicap due to the high complexity of the images to be processed, with polymorphic and clumped pollen grains, dust, or debris. The purpose of this study is to analyze the feasibility of implementing a reliable pollen grain detection system
more » ... ed on a convolutional neural network architecture, which will be used later as a critical part of an automated pollen concentration estimation system. We used a training set of 251 videos to train our system. As the videos record the process of focusing the samples, this system makes use of the 3D information presented by several focal planes. Besides, a separate set of 135 videos (containing 1234 pollen grains of 11 pollen types) was used to evaluate detection performance. The results are promising in detection (98.54% of recall and 99.75% of precision) and location accuracy (0.89 IoU as the average value). These results suggest that this technique can provide a reliable basis for the development of an automated pollen counting system.

Current lifestyle in developed countries makes the practice of outdoor activities to be almost mandatory. But, since these practices such as trekking, biking, horseback, or simply running or walking in urban parks, are made in nature (at least outdoors) not everyone can practice them in optimal physical conditions at any time of the year. more » ... ing and identifying airborne pollen, using artificial intelligence techniques for recognizing four of the most representative allergenic pollen types. The system consists of a first stage for the location of pollen grains in the slides, and a second whose goal is the identification using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and neural nets or SVM. The overall success results achieved with our system are about 88%, averaging for all classes.

Se entrena y prueba el modelo con una nueva versión del conjunto de datos Flickr8k con una traducción al español. Así, se realiza el primer análisis cuantitativo del desempeño de este tipo de modelos en el idioma español. ABSTRACTThe main objective of the present research was to calculate the water footprint of the Colombian cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) production. The evaluation of crop water requirement and irrigation requirement were based on climate, soil and crop conditions in the country. The water requirement estimation was based on data from six municipalities selected for their representativeness of the highest yield, productivity and commercial dynamics of the country. The results show that the Water
more » ... print reached 17,100 m3 t-1. At the province level, the highest record for this parameter was observed in Tolima, with 23,239 m3t-1, while Huila registered the lowest level, with 13,475 m3t-1. Water use per crop unit can be influenced not only by agro-meteorological conditions, but also by the level of production. Therefore, a region with a low water footprint value for a specific crop usually has a favorable climatic condition. Crop evapotranspiration was found to be relatively low, and the highest yields were obtained in association with more productive cropping levels. Given the complexity of a hydrological phenomenon like crop evapotranspiration, the magnitude of these differences may be considered to be small.
