The Economic Value of Wind Energy Nowcasting

In recent years, environmental concerns resulted in an increase in the use of renewable resources such as wind energy. However, high penetration of the wind power is a challenge due to the intermittency of this resource. In this context, the wind energy forecasting has become a major issue. In particular, for the end users of wind energy forecasts, a critical but often neglected issue is the economic value of the forecast. In this work, we investigate the economic value of forecasting from 30
more &raquo; ... n to 3 h ahead, also known as nowcasting. Nowcasting is mainly used to inform trading decisions in the intraday market. Two sources of uncertainty affecting wind farm revenues are investigated, namely forecasting errors and price variations. The impact of these uncertainties is assessed for six wind farms and several balancing strategies using market data. Results are compared with the baseline case of no nowcasting and with the idealized case of perfect nowcast. The three settings show significant differences while the impact of the choice of a specific balancing strategy appears minor.

Augmentation of haptic feedback for teleoperated robotic surgery

A frequently mentioned lack of teleoperated surgical robots is the lack of haptic feedback. Haptics are not only able to mirror force information from the situs, but also to provide spatial guidance according to a surgical plan. However, superposition of the two haptic information can lead to overlapping and masking of the feedback and guidance forces. This study investigates different approaches toward a combination of both information and investigates effects on system usability. Preliminary
more &raquo; ... tudies are conducted to define parameters for two main experiments. The two main experiments constitute simulated surgical interventions where haptic guidance as well as haptic feedback provide information for the surgeon. The first main experiment considers drilling for pedicle screw placements, while the second main experiment refers to three-dimensional milling tasks such as during partial knee replacements or craniectomies. For both experiments, different guidance modes in combination with haptic feedback are evaluated regarding effectiveness (e.g., distance to target depth), efficiency and user satisfaction (e.g., detectability of discrepancies in case of technical guidance error). Regarding pedicle screw placements a combination of a peripheral visual signal and a vibration constitutes a good compromise regarding distance to target depth and detectability of discrepancies. For milling tasks, trajectory guidance is able to improve efficiency and user satisfaction (e.g., perceived workload), while boundary constraints improve effectiveness. If, assistance cannot be offered in all degrees of freedom (e.g., craniectomies), a visual substitution of the haptic force feedback shows the best results, though participants prefer using haptic force feedback. Our results suggest that in case haptic feedback and haptic assistance are combined appropriately, benefits of both haptic modalities can be exploited. Thereby, capabilities of the human-machine system are improved compared to usage of exclusively one of the haptic information.

Air Density Induced Error on Wind Energy Estimation

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> In recent years, environmental concerns have encouraged the use of wind power as a renewable energy resource. However, high penetration of the wind power in the electricity system is a challenge due to the uncertainty of wind energy forecast. Estimation of the wind energy production requires a forecast for the wind (the main source of uncertainty) but also of density, often overlooked. Measure of air density is a key for more accurate wind energy prediction. Wind
more &raquo; ... rms often lack instrumentations of temperature and pressure, needed for accurate air density estimation at hub height to be used for locally debiasing air density forecast. In this study, the error budget of air density estimate is computed distinguishing temperature and pressure contributions. The analysis uses measurements for in-depth local analysis as well as meteorological reanalysis to investigate the added-value of a model-based value when measurement is missing. Meteorological reanalysis is also used to study spatial pattern of error budgets (mountainous area, coastal regions, plains, ...). The effect of altitude is carefully accounted for. Temperature is by far the variable inducing the largest errors when it is missing in the air density correction, and replaced by the standard atmosphere value (i.e. 15&amp;thinsp;°C, used as reference in power curves). It is particularly true for very cold or warm conditions (i.e. far from the standard value), for which the error on wind energy production is nearly halved when an accurate correction of temperature is performed.</p>

Usability of Haptic Volumetric Assistance for Surgical Navigation Tasks

Manual control of surgical instruments represents a sensorimotor control task with at least 3-6 degrees of freedom (DoF). The impact of haptic guidance on volumetric navigation tasks, such as milling of planned volumes for prosthesis fits or preserving sensitive tissues, is investigated. Interaction centered studies are performed to evaluate the usability of the assistance modes for navigation within a volume, along the surface of a volume and around forbidden regions. Results show that haptic
more &raquo; ... ssistance can reduce the number of constraint violations, if the virtual stiffness is high enough. However, haptic assistance also can increase error rates when counterforces are close to the absolute perception threshold, as a false sense of security can arise. For navigation along complex surfaces bilateral haptic constraints should be preferred, while unilateral constraints are sufficient for simple geometries. This study complements previous publications as a basis for a flexible rule-based selection or adaptation of modular haptic assistance systems.
