2014 Procedia Computer Science
Cooperative spectrum sensing is a key function in cognitive radio networks in order to provide unused spectrum access opportunities and mitigate the impact of interference to the primary networks. Cooperative sensing can incur additional cooperation overhead, increased energy consumption, extra sensing time and delay in heterogeneous networks. In this paper, the sensing time period is optimized to minimize energy consumption in a diverse cooperative network using square law combining decision

2013 Journal of Networks
This paper presents the Adaptive Spectrum Opportunity Access (ASOA) scheme. The proposed scheme greatly improves spectrum utilization and provides improved QoS for the secondary users. The secondary data delivery time is adapted in different spectrum opportunities through ASOA scheme based on the estimated collision rates in a sophisticated way. The performance evaluations in terms of the channel utilization, channel collision, secondary data delivery and handoff rates are assessed and compared

Control Techniques and Power Factor Correction Methods: A Review

2018 Journal of Engineering Research and Reports
The ratio of real power flowing into the load to the apparent power in a circuit is referred to as the power factor (PF). It has no unit as its values lie between 0 and 1. Power factor correction (PFC) leads to a reduction in apparent power drawn from the ac source which in turn saves energy and minimizes the transmission losses. This paper reviews various methods used for PFC as well as the various control measures for power factor. The correction methods include distributed PFC, group PFC,
more » ... tralized PFC and combined PFC. Distributed PFC is applicable to large electrical equipment with constant load and power with long connection times. Combined PFC is the hybrid between a distributed and a centralized correction method. Peak current control technique makes use of constant switching frequency even though, the presence of sub-harmonic oscillations at a duty cycle greater than 50% is a disadvantage. The presence of constant switching frequency and better input current waveforms are some of the applications of average current control. In the discontinuous current pulse width modulation (PWM) control, the internal current loop is completely eliminated so that the switch is at a constant frequency. In nonlinear carrier controllers, the duty ratio is determined by comparing a signal derived from the main switch current with a periodic nonlinear carrier waveform. Therefore, combined PFC and nonlinear carrier controllers are more accurate PFC methods for the power plant because they employ a high power factor boost converter with low total harmonic distortion for installations of large equipment with a constant load. This research paper forms a basis for power system planning as it assists in recommending the appropriate and adequate technique(s) for correcting and controlling the pf of the factory.

2017 Journal of Anesthesia & Clinical Research
This study aimed to compare the analgesic effects of caudal anaesthesia in patients undergoing ambulatory colonoscopy using lidocaine only or lidocaine/fentanyl combination. Methods: Fifty-one consecutive adult patients scheduled for colonoscopy participated in the study. Participants were randomly allocated into two equal groups (A and B). Caudal anaesthesia was instituted in both groups with 1.5% preservative free lidocaine (19.4 ml); 0.6 ml of normal saline was added in Group A and 30 mcg of

The number of patients requiring rescue analgesia (fentanyl/midazolam) were also evaluated and compared. Results: Twenty-six patients in the saline-lidocaine group (A) and twenty-five patients in the fentanyl-lidocaine group (B) completed the study. The mean and standard deviation of the caudal block onset time (minute) in group A was 11.71 ± 4.26 comparable to group B which was 13.50 ± 4.85, p=0.15. The median NPRS while navigating the splenic flexure was 2 in group A and 3 in group B; and while navigating the hepatic flexure it was 5 in group A and 3 in group B. But p values are 0.285 and 0.031 respectively. Rescue analgesia was employed in fewer number of patients in group B (16%) compared to group A (34.6%). Conclusion: Caudal epidural block with lidocaine/fentanyl combination provided superior, safe and satisfactory anaesthesia for ambulatory colonoscopy.

The Internet is evolving towards a two-fold architecture that will comprise of traditional infrastructure based networks as well as emerging self organised autonomic peripheral networks. Such Internet peripheral networks are being termed as the Internet of things (IoT) whereby smart objects and devices will be connected together in a fully distributed fashion to provide ubiquitous services through pervasive networking. Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) is regarded as one of the pervasive

There are several wellknown challenges to be addressed in order to enable MANET deployments of large islands of interconnected smart devices. Therefore, in this paper, we perform simulations using the ns-2 software, for various well-known routing protocols for MANETs in order to determine the scalability of these protocols. This paper analyses the scalability of the routing protocols with respect to routing overhead required by approaches while also considering the packet delivery latency, which is an important Quality of Service (QoS) metric.
